water in trunk lid

Asked by Barryallen Feb 05, 2010 at 05:10 PM about the 2006 Cadillac CTS 3.6L Sport RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I washed car about a week ago, it stays in garage mostly. Today I opened trunk lid and I could hear a significant amount of water sloshing around, and some of it running out into trunk.I removed two rubber plugs on the bottom outboard side of lid and water ran out. Has anyone else noticed a similar problem?

Thanks
Barry

I had that problem. How do you remove the two rubber? I couldn't do it.

2009 CTS-V Garaged since day 1. Recently moved so it was out for a month and wasn't smelling nice and new anymore. Upon further inspection I found that the spare tire well which only houses the pump was completely filled with water. I pulled the panel down where the battery is (the whole side panel) and found a green water flow tube (coming from above and towards the inner wheel well) that was supposed to be inserted into a slot of a rubber boot going through the inner wheel well. This has always been my achilles heel when it comes to GM, good and even great product gets a bad reputation due to the extremely horrid build quality thanks to those lazy, over paid, no work ethic Union Workers.

I've got a 2009 CTS4...bought it used about 2 months ago and ran into the same problem (water getting "trapped" inside trunk...when trunk opens, water flows out from between trunk and interior carpet panel). I still need to bring the car in for evaluation, however, I believe the water is coming into the trunk via the chrome trim that sits atop the license plate. When I had the trunk opened, I noticed that the two screws that fasten that chrome piece were horribly rusted.

Wife has a 2013 CTS which she purchased new. Around Sept. of 2017 she commented that there was a strange smell in trunk. Looked briefly but found nothing unusual. She commented again in Nov. 2017. This time I accessed the spare tire and found 2" of water in spare tire well. MoSpeed's answer above saved me. I removed battery cover in the trunk and there was the green drain line hanging outside of the foam. Inserted it into rubber boot and assume problem solved. Not sure how long it has been like this and since we have had this serviced at 2 different Caddy dealers, not sure which one employs the careless idiot.

I HAVE A 2013 Cadillac XTS Platinum, I saw water dripping from the underside trunk. I removed the 2 plastic fasteners on the floor in the trunk and removed the styrofoam mold that sits on the floor and saw a large amount of water where the spare tire would be but this car does not come with a spare. How is the water getting in there. It also smells.

There is a TSB on this. Remove the license plate, and pop the plastic license plate screw holders out and put some silicon around them. I know it seems counter-intuitive, but I pulled all the carpet and panels out of the trunk, stuffed everything with paper towels, and sprayed it with a hose. A ton of water comes in there. Good luck finding replacement carpet, I am still searching.

2002 Deville DTS. We found it to be the 3rd brake light seal. Discovered that all 5 nuts holding it in were finger tight. I believe this is due to heat shrinkage of the seal on the 3rd brake light. Applied silicone, tightened back up and leak has stopped. As with another post, I also believe the holes behind the license plate could be an issue for some as well. Time will tell on ours.

I have a 2011 CTS and have the exact same thing! Do we just silicone the underside until it stop leaking?, I afraid to ask a Dealer!!"ran into the same problem (water getting "trapped" inside trunk...when trunk opens, water flows out from between trunk and interior carpet panel). I still need to bring the car in for evaluation, however, I believe the water is coming into the trunk via the chrome trim that sits atop the license plate. I wrote a whole thing without an account and it disappeared.... Anyway... I bought a 08 CTS. I noticed the same issue with the inside of the trunk lid having water pouring out from between the lid and furry panel. I also noticed the screws above the license plate were rusty also. I don't think the water is coming in through there. I believe it's coming in through the brake light on top of the trunk. That water probably makes its way down toward the rusty screws. I don't see how the water can come upwards in, or even sideways with that amount. I'm going to pour water over the brake light and see if it comes through the other side.

I have 2 of these 2008 cts’ sand both did this. I resealed the third brake light and that did not resolve the problem so I did the tsb as stated above and replaced the license holders nope still leaking into the trunk lid. Ended up being the chrome trim in the middle above the tag the part that holds the tag lights. Took it off cleaned all the dirt and wiped it down with rubbing alcohol then applied clear sealer around all the openings and screw holes no more leaks period not even a drop.
