How do I know what motor I have I keep
hearing E46  but not 100 %.   99 328i 5
speed 2.8.   Title states M53 code wise or
I'm reading it wrong.  ??

Your car is an E46. The engine code for your engine should be M52TU. I don't think there was ever an M53.
