Dead battery every morning
Asked by Flammersfeldt Feb 13, 2018 at 11:36 AM about the 2011 Ford Escape XLT AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hello I have a 2011 ford escape. I'm having an
issue every morning with my battery being dead. I
just got a new battery a week,ago. I took it to a
shop and they said my batter and alternator is fine
and the starter checked out fine. I did get a remote
start installed but recently gotten it taken out to
see if that fixed the option but that didn't do
anything and some things still draining the battery.

Sounds like something is remaining on, draining the battery. You'll have to trace it out. (Assuming the charging system is operating properly)
I would take it to a Ford dealership's service department for a proper repair.
Did you find the cause yet? We just discovered the same exact problem with our 2011 Escape Xlt (after changing the battery). Please advise. Thanks.
Had same problem and found out rear wiper motor was draining battery
My 2011 escape started doing same thing, I assumed it was my 9 yr old battery but put in a newer battery and its drained in 12 to 15 hrs. Anyone find the cause?
****confirmed *** battery drain caused by rear wiper motor, found extremely, dispite being shut off. Unplugged and now the drain is gone. 2011 Ford escape XLT v6.
I too had the same problem with finding a new battery dead in the morning. Problem was also a seized rear wiper motor that was quite hot to the touch. I was able to free the arm with penetrating oil and then applied small amount of grease. This might only be a stop gap measure until I am able to change the motor out.

I had the same problem, wished I would have seen this board previously. Mechanic said his 10 amp fuse on his tester blew when they finally checked the rear wiper motor and found it seized and somehow drawing huge. Current even after vehicle turned off.
I also have a 2011 Ford escape with a battery drain. I found out it was the rear wiper blade motor. The wiper stopped working about a week before but the motor was still very hot. I unplugged it and wasn't planning on fixing it. But then I discovered my front wiper blade spray didn't work. Once I replaced the rear wiper motor, the front wiper spray worked...I guess it's all connected. Hope this helps!
I too had a battery drain on a 2011 Ford Escape from rear wiper being stuck up. When the motor doesn't complete it's circuit it stays on which is why the battery drains. I had my dad disconnect the motor, and it solved the problem. However, shorty after that fluid stopped coming out of my front wipers. I could still hear them 'trying' for a short while now they're silent. No fuses blown. Also, anyone else have issues with the positive battery cable? Mines horrid.
I have a 2012 Escape that was experiencing the exact same issue. After replacing the battery (which had a bad cell, likely from the short) and testing the alternator i googled this site. After reading through the questions and answers i checked the rear wiper motor and low and behold it was hot. Apparently there are issues with the rear wiper motor due to various reasons. In any event, after disconnecting the motor the battery is not draining. It is cool to have sites like this to help in the diagnosing issue.

I disconnected everything no back window washer but still keep getting a dead battery
I have a 2012 and it's looking like I'm having the same issue.
2014 Escape: Same issue, local Ford dealer could not diagnose and just changed out the battery. I would like to disconnect the rear wiper and see if that fixes the issue while I order a new one. Is it fairly easy to disconnect the rear wiper motor? Any details on how to do that? Thanks
Another prominent issue with this vintage of Ford is the shifter solenoid that gets activated when the brake is pushed to let you shift out of park. Either the brake switch, or solenoid causes the draw. You and remove the fuse - inside passenger side #5 on mine - and the draw is not fed. Also, you cannot shift out of park. Nice place to test though.
Two new batteries and the back window wiper disconnected and I'm still boosting it every morning and after work. Alt is fine shops can't find it..going nuts. Bought it to turn key and go but so far proven to be quite the hassle

I have A 2011 Escape and had my battery drained twice after back wiper motor got stuck. I twisted the wiper blade to help it complete a cycle and it started to work again. I heard strange noice at the back which I guess must be the wiper motor kept trying to move the wiper. If you hear the strange noice, you may have same problem. Especially if your wiper cannot move as it should be.
I have 2011 Ford Escape V6. I have the same issue a the battery draining overnight. I checked how many amps the is being consumed with the battery disconnected. it has an intermittent draw 6 amps and o.9 amps. Is pointing to something intermittent. My question is doesn't the wipers has to go thru the ignition key?
I have a 2012 Ford Escape and was reading up on my battery going dead every morning. Now I found the answer, thank you my back wiper is stuck up and did not complete the wipe and set back to proper formation. Now my battery is dying every morning.... EUREKA Damn back wiper if anyone could possibly tell me how to fix this issue without disconnecting it would be a wonderful help... oh and FYI... LAST TIME I EVER OWN A FORD...
Wow same thing on my 2011 xlt awd as well...it dies after a new battery , happened three times couldn’t figure out why! Shouldn’t ford be replacing on a recall if back wiper issue?
In my son's 2012 Escape it ended up being the battery cable. A good auto shop figured it out in less than an hour. That was months ago and he has had no issue with it. Previously he had replaced fuses, pulled fuses, replaced the battery, and maybe a couple of other things.
My mom has a 2012 escape and if she doesn’t drive it for a few days it doesn’t start and requires a boost. The dealership had it for 4 days and all they did was test the battery and said it was fine. We bought a new battery a few months later and it still happens. The dealership and Ford said the same thing....she doesn’t drive it enough! Ridiculous answer in my opinion. If I don’t drive my car for a few days it still starts.
Same thing just happened to my daughter's car 2010 escape , 2 days in a row dead battery ,had battery and alternator checked, they were fine told husband about this post,he disconnected rear window wiper, car started just fine this morning, Thank You All!
I have the same problem. 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. I need to jump start every morning. I'll try it the rear window wiper.
Same problem got new battery cause we test the alternator and it was good , shop found rear wiper motor was shorting out replaced that 3 months ago fixed the problem , and 4 days ago same issue came back again alternator test is good and rear wiper motor still looks good
My daughter has the same problem on her escape that we gave her when she got her drivers license. My wife bought this car new in 2004 and wasn't until my daughter went off to college last fall that we found out she had a problem as the car would sit for 5 days or so between drives and the battery would be dead. I have been checking the battery voltage daily and it will drop .3-.5 volts every day and when the voltage drops below 10 it will drop 2 volts/per day. This with just the car sitting. Pulled fuse #27 and no voltage drop, although I only checked it one day. I am not sure what is drawing that much current when the vehicle is just sitting there. Radio off, no interior lights on. I must add that the voltage drop is very inconsistent and I can't check it daily since she is working now. Vehicle starts every day and I did buy her a small jump starter and showed her how to use just in case. Any help would be appreciated.
The rear wiper in our 2011 Ford Escape seized in the up position. Two days later it wouldn't start. It boosted fine and always started for a day after boosting - then nothing. I took it in to the garage but the alternator, battery and connections were fine. After reading this post I checked the rear wiper motor and it was hot. I unplugged it and haven't had any issues.
hello all. i am having the exact same problem. can someone tell me how to disconnect the rear wiper motor?
My son's 2010 Mercury Mariner .... Same issue. Rear wiper was stuck due to the bike rack he mounted. Hooked ammeter in series with battery and it was drawing 6 amps with ignition off! Took off bike rack, the wiper completed its cycle, and now only minimal parasitic current drain.

My son has a 2011 Escape, dead battery evert morning. Instead of disconnecting the rear wiper motor he pulled the fuse for it, (it's a dedicated fuse only for the rear wiper) no issues since. Question remains, with this many cars having the same problem, why isn't Ford issuing a recall?
we have a 2015 Escape and have been to the dealership twice. they have kept it overnight and conducted a parasitic loss test on the system and yet found nothing. I feel the is a systemic issue and am going to call them back suggesting a service bulletin or recall. although a pain in the arrrsss… so far no charges $$ for this....
Good morning Everyone. We have a 2015 Ford Escape Titanium with approximately 87000 miles. We have been experiencing the same issue with the battery draining. We took it to the Ford dealership where we purchased it. They did....basically...nothing other than tell us that the battery and alternator tested good. They charged us for it and sent us home. We took it to a private mechanic a week ago and begged him to keep it and diagnose the problem. He found the issue. It is related to the ant-theft system and its relay. The mechanic traced out all the wires and also heard a humming noise coming from the door locks. I will get the exact details after I pick up the car today. It is an expensive fix because of the number of hours it took to find the problem. Will post again later.
Tracee, this is EXACTLY what I have dealt with and all via my Ford Dealer where the car was purchased; that is, the battery draining from something! One would say the dealer, of all people, should be able to resolve the problem. Each time I've taken it back to the dealer, all under warranty, they have "fixed the problem".... 3 times over the past 2 years. Sorry, but while I understand diagnostics aren't always precise science, 3 times (and a newly purchased car) should not have these issues! Nonetheless, I've just taken it in for the fourth time. While they claim to have "fixed it" THIS time (the same as they have the past three times), I'm weary of accepting this as a "fix", especially since acceptance will close the repair order and my warranty coverage (imagine that timing?!*). I'm beyond frustrated and plan to do more than just take an anti-Ford stance. This is pure liability for faulty manufacturing in something, and just because I don't know the diagnoses, the manufacturer and their representatives (dealers) sure the heck should!!!!!!!! Isn't this part of what we pay for in a vehicle, and warranty?!!!!!! Please post an update, if any. Thank you.

2013 Ford Escape Titanium...I am currently having the same problem. Car drove fine for a 2 hour trip with one stop and then sat overnight...dead...boosted with booster cables let run for 10 minutes and then drove for 15 minutes. Drove another 2 hours back home and this morning dead again. Had a similar issue a couple years ago with this and took to a garage. Even though the battery was fairly new, they said battery and replaced it. My hubby was overseas so I didn't have a lot of choices. He is home now and I am hoping with all the info on this thread we can figure this out. Bought this car brand new and have had nothing but problems. Ford will do NOTHING. They don't care.
Thanks guys. Ford Escape with the battery drain this week and checked the rear windshield wiper thanks to posts like these. Sure enough it was stuck and hot enough to burn your finger. Open the plastic shell, and unplugged that sucker and the car holds a charge now. Probably lucky that thing didn't catch fire.
Could it also be a problem with the outside mirrors> I can't get them to turn on.
Just found this out about my 2010 Ford Escape Xlt. I've been having a Parasitic Battery drain that's has now killed 3 batteries before I found out what the cause is. Had a power drain test done and come to find out it is my instrument cluster that is pulling power when my vehicle is completely shut off and keys out of the ignition. Pull the number 26 fuse from the interior fuse panel and the battery drain stopped. Why are so many people having these battery drain problems with these Escapes and Ford is doing nothing to address the issues?

Same problem with my wife's Ford Escape pulled fuse for rear wiper and has been good for the last 5 days.
Same problem battery dead after one day of sitting. Replaced battery had all the checks done on the alternator and the starter everything's good. Jumped it and disconnected the rear wiper motor today we will see if that works hopefully!
That did not work for me. I'l have to take it in.

I have a 2012 ford escape 2.5 L fwd and had a dead battery every morning. I checked the drop on all circuits under the hood and in the cab, no obvious answers. The rear wiper motor which is a common fault was also working properly. After taking it to our local shop the tech ran a 3 day "overnight" test and discovered the factory radio was the source of the parasitic draw, >5 milliamps. After purchasing a touch screen radio and a new battery, my vehicle starts every time without issue and it has been 6 months since the new radio and battery replacement.

Thank you for this post... Broke my rear glass on Saturday, found a cheap replacement window at my local pick and pull, put it in Saturday afternoon, my kid called this morning saying the electronics were acting up... found this post BEFORE buying a new battery... unplugged the wiper motor (which was HOT to the touch).... Escape fired right up!!
Crazy. Had same problem with rear wiper. Ol lady said it quit working. 2 days later it won't start. Jumped it. Came out next day, dead again. Read this forum, unplugged rear wiper, and let it sit overnight and started right up
