Chevy Malibu Key fob

Asked by Andrew Jan 23, 2016 at 10:27 PM about the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2011 chevy malibu and the lockand unlock buttons
do not work on either of the key fobs. The panic and trunk
button still work and the locks still work when using the
button is in the cab. The key fob was tested at the dealer
and they said it still works but it may need to be
programmed. Would this be the case if some of the buttons
still work cause it would seem that the signal is working?

Do you have a burglar alarm system on the car? Perhaps you need to see if it can be activated then turned off. Have you disconnected the battery for any reason? The fobs may need to be reprogramed. Also check to see if the battery need replacing.

If this is just strictly a KEY FOB ISSUE like mine was, there is an easy solution! If you're looking to avoid going to the dealership, or your vehicle is no longer under warranty, I had some stuff laying the house that fixed this problem for me. Very fast, easy and cheap! 2 things you'll need...1) Super Glue, 2) Aluminum Foil or Conductive Copper Tape. I had the same issue with my 2012 Malibu (Lock, Unlock, and Remote Start would NOT work). Trunk release and alarm buttons both worked still, fuses in the car were good. I took apart both key fobs, and removed the circuit boards with the battery attached. Took the back side of the rubber pieces with the conductive contacts showing, and super glued VERY small pieces of conductive copper adhesive tape to the tiny contact circles (ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE RUBBER PIECE). Put it back together, works like a charm every time now! Very cheap fix, and you can do it yourself in no time! I recommend trying that as it worked for me. Hope this helps someone looking for an easy fix...

That Ryan dude knows what’s up. I did this to my key fobs just now and I jumped up and down after the horn honked when I locked it. These key fobs haven’t worked in 3 years y’all. Thanks for the words of wisdom!

Ryan with the above mentioned conductive copper or aluminum foil technique works 110% of the time. I also have a 2012 Chevy Malibu, my keyfob has NOT worked for the unlock and locking feature from the time I purchased it used almost 5 years ago. I have gone without since then and even contemplated buying a Universal keyfob because I refuse to pay a dealership 300 bucks for a foh and programming. As with many things such as replacing my frequent burned out headlights, I researched online and found an almost free and perfect technique to remedy this issue. Thank you Ryan for posting this and to anyone who has this same issue, just open your keyfob, be gentle and place some aluminum foil in between the fobs board and the rubber button pieces to aid in conductivity. AWESOME TO HAVE MY DAMN KEYFOB BACK WORKING!!!

Omg!! This really works! I had bought a new battery for my remote and sadly to say it didn’t work. I was dreading that I would have to go to the dealership. I came across this forum and Ryan’s post and figured I would give it a try as I didn’t have anything to lose. Needless to say this worked and I’m extremely happy! I’m even happier that it only cost me $4.00 for a new battery that I didn’t really need but it was probably time I replaced that anyway. Thank you Ryan! You the man!!

If you don't want to mess with glueing in a conductive piece of material. You can just by a new case and pad for $7. Depends on what you want to mess with. https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Suburban-Traverse-Cadillac- Escalade/dp/B07QZW8TSM/ref=sr_1_12? crid=1OJ30286JNWJ4&keywords=chevy+key+fob+cover&qid=1578580404&sprefix=chevy +key+fob+%2Caps%2C149&sr=8-12#customerReviews
