Chevy Equinox transmission died
Asked by Moli19 Feb 18, 2017 at 07:00 PM about the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox 1LT AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
We have a 2011 equinox with 91,000 miles on it and
we're just told we have to replace the transmission
for $4700. This is the first car I've owned in my life
that has had such a short life span. Is it customary
for the transmission to die on a 6 year old
vehicle???? Obviously a surprise- would appreciate
learning if there are other owners with similar
issues. Chevy says it's past the 5 year mark for the
Powertrain warranty, even though it's under the
100k miles....

Same - my equinox had 55K miles on it when the transmission went out. labor was expensive because of such a small place to work in... sooo frustrating...

No it is not customary...and I am sick of the US making cars that won't even put up 100k HOW EMBARRASSED YOU MUST BE.....i suggest that you can simply copy or ''learn'' from the Japanese get it done or get out of the car business
If I didn,t work for a auto parts co.i would be bankrupt ,011 equniox is a crap can,90,000mi,many issues, much money.
The transmission just went on my 2011 Equinox with 88,000 km !!
Where is transmission control module locate on 2012 equinox lt

2011 Equinox...Oil leak - fixed...front window motors die - fixed...transmission dies - fixed....stabilizer link broKen -fixed....engine oil consumption problem - in shop for a few days - getting fixed. Grrrrr. Where's the class action suit for the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox's?
I talked to many auto mecanics, they don,t care for chev- equniox, I must be a mechanic to own one!

My 2011 Chevy Equinox LT is in the shop right now. Reverse gear quit on me right as I was getting home from work. Had the SUV less than a year. Really frustrating. Only 120,000 miles on it. Mechanic seems to think it's a small plate right in the face of the transmission. Hopefully that's what it is cause a brand new transmission will be roughly $2,700. (labor time not included)
Did you find anyone that will help with the transmission like a a warranty like Goodwill warranty. Since Chevy knows that the Equinox are having problems with the Transmissions all the time . They should be able to stand behind and help
I have had nothing but problems with my equinox, from electrical issues one after another, Transmission issues, oil consumption issues, catalytic converter, not to even say I have had 5 control modules go out that I had to fix. This car is the biggest POS I have ever owned in my life. The seat motor just went out, and my media center went out.. So I have no notification sounds, no lights at all in the cd player/media stuff.
What kind of transmissions are in chevy equinox

So any class action suits for transmission issue/failure covering 2011 Equinox?
84,000 km when my transmission went ... along with a lot of other problems along the way. It's been nonstop repairs. I complained to dealership but they said wouldn't help me because I didn't have all my service done there (I didn't because I felt the dealership mechanics were crooked). The car is definitely a lemon!
There are recalls on the catalytic converter and the Tranny for Oil consumption issues.
Xela61, I would totally agree this car is a LEMON , and I cant stress that enough. I even did the Lemon law with this sucker.. but didnt get nearly the results I wanted.. I just wanted them to take the car back. I asked the dealer after 6m to take it back, and they wouldn't. Now MIND YOU.... They had my car more then I had it in the 1st 8months I had it. But they would not do anything for me. now I am stuck with a Piece of crap car and there is nothing I can do but fix it one electrical problem after another.
WOW! Our transmission went out at around 91,000. We towed it from California since the City Chevrolet deal there said it would cost $5000.00 to have it fixed. We have the services records to show that all maintenance had been done correctly by the dealer. Tow 1 day and $550.00. Repair $2480.00. I think GM should have paid for the whole thing after hearing about these other people. No more GM cars for us!
Same issues here. Transmission died at 101,000 miles on our 2011 Equinox. An estimated $4000 to get a new one. Crazy high oil consumption as well. NEVER EVER again will anyone in this family buy a Chevrolet. I can’t believe Chevrolet knows about the issues and still keeps dumping everyone in its shit. Shame on you GM.
Unbelievable (not) my 11 Equinox with 107k miles . transmission went out and I’m being told it’s gonna be 3500 for a replaced used or 4700 for a new. It’s not even worth it at this point. I don’t have the money at all it’s a absolute mess. Any suggestions
My 2010 Equinox transmission went out and the cost of the repair here in Nevada is $5100. They said the transmission itself cost $3000 and the rest is labor. The people I got this quote from seemed honest. At this point, do I really want to to spend the money to fix this car? Yep...I guess, because I don't have the money to get another car right now. I hear everyone's frustration. I hope the class action suit covers these costs too. I believe they meet in October 2019 to decide the ruling. Stay on top of that if you want compensation, especially if you have had oil consumption problems.
It seams everyone with a 2011 has problems. My 2006. 157,000 miles with no problems, my 2016 has 105,000 and no problems, very reliable cars
My 2011 Equinox’s transmission died at 112,000 miles. I had the car 2 years and over those 2 years put $4000 into it(not included transmission). So now I’m into it for 6k. Lemon is right. I’m selling it.
Have a 2014 Equinox that's been in the shop 3 x's for transmission and it still is clunking, the mechanic told me to get use to it, now the transmission slips out of gear and the warranty is a week past expiration date only 78,0000 on it. Not seeing any recalls for the horrible transmission.

Hey, I posted my Chevy Equinox issues earlier in this thread. Which includes transmission clunking, transmission replacement, oil piston repair, etc...I found out since 2005-2009 chevrolet equinox had a class action suit settled for faulty transmissions, and if you search there are 2 more class action suits involving new chevrolet equinoxs. One for transmission issues and the other for oil piston leak repairs and out of pocket expenses. I am not sure if I'm covered by these since I'm Canadian but from the comments here I thought everyone would be interested in following these class action suits. If it doesn't cover Canadians, please any other Canadians here start making some noise!!!
Hi Oceanpearl I am Canadian too. I have had so many issues with this car including transmission going at 80,000 km. Every time I turn around there's another major problem!! I wish they would get a class action going here in Canada!
2010quinox with 83567 miles - transmission died. Being quoted $4000 to fix. I've had lots of issues with this car, all of which I see listed here! Excess oil consumption, a/c compressor not working (quoted $1000 to replace).
Oceanpearl answered 5 years ago
Oil consumption issues??? Class action suit claims administrator 1-888-970-0698. Covers rental fees, etc...You have to get your name on the list.
I currently have a 2011 POS Chevy Equinox. So far, I have spent over $6500 just to keep this hunk of garbage on the road. Timing chain slipped resulting in an entire engine replacement. Exhaust manifold-junk. Fuel pump-junk. As soon as this piece of crap is paid off, I’m unloading it at the nearest dealership. I have lost ALL trust in American made vehicles. I’m going with a TOYOTA or Honda next. At least you can get 300k out of them!! Screw you Chevy!
So what can we do? My 2011 Equinox transmission went out as well @ 84,000! I spent over a $1000 just to determine the problem! Does a bad transmission come from the oil consumption & piston problem......do I turn in claim or not?
My 2010 equinox just bit the dust. 69, 000 miles on it and the transmission went. Just all of a sudden, no warning whatsoever!!! If I knew of all the transmissions problem equinox had, I never would have bought one. Is there anyone to get in touch with to help with the expenses, $4,400 later.
I have a 2014 with 140,000 miles on it .. no transmission issues here.
I agree my 2010 equinox transmission just went out no warning. I also have had issues with the air conditioner and oil consumption. Loads of money this car has suck out of me. Of course no class actions to cover this mess of a car.

I have a 2010 Equinox with 141672 miles (228,000 kms) and the transmission requires work. I was hoping for another year but repairs here in Canada are in the $7-8,000 mark. We have a 2011 as well just approaching 111,846 miles (180,000 kms) Hope it does no go too.
