I have a 2008 bighorn with the hemi and at 49k miles the rear is starting to rumble although it could be an axle bearing that could be going.

Asked by wjg Nov 26, 2012 at 08:00 PM about the 2008 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Per the paper work on the truck it isn't clear if it has posi-traction but I doubt that it does but it does have the tow package.  The rumble is at all speeds and doesn't change pitch or intensity with speed changes.  The truck has never been overloaded but I'm ready to start towing a trailer with a GVWR of 6000 lbs and I'm concerned.  Has Dodge had trouble with axle bearings?

Did you check the axle gear oil level? If it is low do a drain and fill on the axle.

You can sometimes eliminate bearings by raising wheels off of the ground and running. If its a wheel bearing you should note a marked difference in pitch and amplitude of noise. If you still get the noise look at tranny, U joints, and rear differential. Also you are correct your truck does not have posi.
