Subaru Forester excessive oil consumption

Asked by Jimbolaiya Jun 28, 2019 at 12:06 PM about the 2011 Subaru Forester 2.5 X

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2011 Forester burns 2 quarts of
oil per 1200 miles confirmed by
Subaru but they are not covering the
full repair because I found out about
the issue outside the warranty. This
has been an issue before 2017 which
Subaru had on record and also they
already knew about the 2016 lawsuit
but told me it was normal
consumption without offering a
consumption test. Because they said
it was normal and did not offer a
consumption test  and I trusted them
now it is out of warranty and I am
stuck with a defective Subaru.

Take up the issue with Subaru of America directly rather than the dealer.

I am doing an experiment with my 2015 Subaru that uses oil at the rate of around 1 quart in 1,500 miles. I have used an engine flush to try and unstick the low tension oil rings and preliminary results are encouraging. Once I have enough miles on the car I will know if this really worked for my car or not. In the meantime I suggest changing the oil every 5,000 miles which may help a little. How far do you go between changes?

Hi My engine would be completely out of oil at around 4000 miles or less so it doesn’t even make it to Subaru’s recommended 5000 oil changes ( after they told me that 7500 is ok for synthetic oil). While most cars are going longer between required oil changes Subaru’s are getting shorter and shorter. Originally they told us to change to synthetic oil and then the durations would be 7500 between changes. Later they told us change every 5000. Now it looks like we need to refill all of the oil before 4000 miles. We talked to SOA before the consumption test and afterwards and even escalated the issue to a service manager at SOA but they won’t budge. They are making a calculated business decision to protect their bottom line instead of giving good service to its customers who might likely buy another Subaru. They know as long as a they offer a little compensation that they cannot be sued or be accused of not dealing with their issues. In the long run they save a lot of money by only partially compensating the repair but it leaves many many people with a bad experience with Subaru and leaving the brand. Subaru’s finance department may be happy with this calculated decision but I don’t think the CEO would be since it took decades to build this brand into what it is. We were going to buy and also recommend many more Subaru’s to friends and family but now cannot in good conscience do that. This is still an issue after the 2016 lawsuit and they are still not mitigating it sufficiently to keep loyal customers. Their brand is suffering because of this and they are dealing with it short- sightedly.

I am absolutely having the same issue. 2018 Forester 6 speed manual. But, am in Canada. Would be more than interested in joining the class action, if another one crops up, as I am very disappointed by the response from the dealers. Sorry, I am not on Twitter.

Same issue here. I have a 2011 Forester nad took it in in 2017 for oil issues. They ran tests and replaced gaskets and some seals which cost me around $2200. Never did they take the innitiative to run any other tests in regards to known issues that might have actually fixed the problem. I called SOA but, was a couple of months over their time limits and 10K miles over. Just a goodluck and see you later was offered. Was looking into purchasing another Subaru soon, but I am definitely not going down this road again. Hard to beleive that they know there is an issue and have turned the other way instead of fixing it

We have a Subaru 2013 outback and had an oil issue from the beginning. They did the oil consumption test at 60 000 miles and of course no problem was detected even if we were adding 1 to 2 quarts of oil between oil change. Now we are adding 1 quart every 200 miles and did an other test. The car failed the test, obviously, but Subaru doesn’t want to cover the cost of the short block engine because we are now out of warranty. The issue is that we had this problem from the beginning (engineering design issue) and have all of our record from the dealer but yet Subaru of America refuses to do anything. We were wondering if a new class action was on against Subaru for not wanted to fixe the short block assembly even after the previous class action of 2016? Thank you for your input.

Same thing here. 2012 Subaru Forester, normally aspirated engine. The thing uses oil like a '73 Vega. I took it to the dealer at about 500 miles because of the oil consumption, also because of the oil light not working. They "fixed" the oil light, all right. This past month, I lent it to a friend while I was out of the country. Forgot to say to check the oil every time you get gas. So, now it has a spun bearing and a seized engine. I figured I'd take it to an engine builder and get the engine remachined and built right; found out the 10.5:1 compression ratio pistons aren't available from reputable parts sources (except Subaru itself, who is demonstrably not a reputable source). Of course the Subaru dealership will do nothing because "there wasn't an official oil consumption test." Anyway, I suggest the best course of action is to drop a used engine into the thing, and sell it, then buy a Toyota or a Honda or some other brand of car. The older Subaru that I drove didn't have problems like this one, and I doubt there's any decent fix. I thought about swapping engines, but apparently that is way more of a pain due to electronics compatibility etc. Junk is junk, as far as I can tell.
