Does a 2004 vw passat 2.8L V6 30 valve engine 5 speed 6 cylinder have a timing chain or belt? Seems to me it is a chain. Pleas advise thanks.

Timing chain. Get you a Bentley manual or CD...learn your car, bro.
It'll look something like this...
Thanks. 3 VW dealers recently have told me it has a timing belt and I need to get it changed ASAP but I've owned the car since it was new and never had the belt changed. It has 208k on it and no one ever mentioned changing the belt until recently. I have always used VW for the scheduled maintenance. I think that this is strange. I appreciate the quick response. Thanks.
The 2004 Passat V6 2.8L has a timing belt NOT A CHAIN. The VR6 engine has a timing chain. Learn your own car bro.. > Scott
Don't have a Passat...just based info on the tech data available. Human error...but, any and all VW owners should obtain the tech data for their specific model...no one should rely solely on the dealership for technical information.

The 2004 Passat has the Audi 2.8 V6, which has a timing belt on the front which ought to be replaced every 105K miles. there are chains in each cylinder head, between the camshafts, but those don't require any normal maintenance. Scott was referencing the VW VR6 engine, which is chain driven. That engine is in the newer generation of Passat.
1998 to 2005 Passat V6's have a timing belt and 2 timing chains. Contrary to what someone else stated in this thread, they do need maintenance occasionally.
