Yes, you would have to take the Valve Cover off to have a look at them!
2.4 DOHC is listed as non interference with a foot note that valves can hit each other if camshafts are turned out of time. You will likely see nothing by taking valve cover off. You could replace timing belt and run a compression test and that will certainly tell you.
Just do a compression test as Bob suggests after putting a belt on with the proper alignment.

In 2016 we all use an Endoscope to view the combustion chamber along with valves, easy fast and digitally recorded for the client. Regards
Endoscope is for looking in your colon. Most do it yourselfers don't have high tech electronics.

Bob, electronic diagnostic tools are completely different in 2016 inspection is is done with a YES, a endoscope formerly a Medical "scope" now we all use them! Check them out anyone can afford it ($50) USB to Phone, Laptop its been around overseas for a few years now, the USA has fallen behind in most areas..Overseas these tools are common everywhere.Regards
