Car won't start numerous times then starts like nothing is the matter.
Asked by Jakebrake Oct 17, 2012 at 07:35 PM about the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hello, I own a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.7L AWD. I began having issues with it not wanting to start as of this past Monday. Over most of the day I tried over and over to start my car with the same results, click. A warning message flashed on my instrument bezel reading "Transmission Over Temp" but my car had been sitting for hours. I looked online and found feedback to this Transmission Over Temp warning message which suggested a defective (TCM) Transmission Control Module. Towards the very later end of that same day I tried one last time to start my car and it started. The next morning, Tuesday, my car started fine then towards the end of Tuesday it again did not want to start. I next checked the OBD error and it read NONE. Then after many more attempts with still no start I checked again my OBD error and it read P0153 which suggests "Invalid SKIM Key". I'm curious if I have two issues now "Transmission Over Temp=TCM replace as well as P0513=Invalid SKIM Key or did the error P0513 come up only because I had rapidly over and over attempted to start my car? After all this my car finally started. Then Wednesday, this morning I couldn't get it to start once again. I'd like to get some more reassuring feedback before I purchase this TCM and attempt to install then reprogram as well as if I truly need to replace my SKIM Key? Now when I check the message P0513 does not come up and it still is not starting. Any thoughts and suggestions will be much appreciated for I am broke and do not have the money to just drove it off at the dealer. I'd really like to do the research and fix it myself if at all possible. Thank you kindly!

That worked! Had Jeep towed to dealer and they wanted $350.00 to replace the starter. Passed on that and brought car home. Removed the starter and had it tested at a starter rebuild shop. It tested fine. He suggested clean all the terminals. I removed the harness from the battery to the starter and had him check it. . He replace a few inches of the yellow wire that actuates the starter solenoid. I cleaned every terminal on the piece of harness. Positive side and negative side. BTW, none of the terminals looked corroded. Jeep is starting just fine, for now. Time will tell. David
David, Did you have any other issues with your vehicle? I am experiencing the same transmission over temp issue - my car won't start, and that is the code I see just before I remove the key from the ignition. We had this happen once last winter, then two hours later the car started. We took the vehicle in to get checked and Jeep found nothing amiss. We replaced the transmission 3 months later for a shifting issue. Now, we are having the same issue again, but we have a baby now and are especially nervous about getting stranded. Please let me know if your fix worked, at least for the time being.
Jenny, This is my daughter's car and she has not had any problems since. Knock on wood. Good luck. David
I Have A 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. We Had Problems With It Starting It Would Turn On For About 3 Seconds Then Just Turns Off. Sometimes For Hours. I Took It To A Jeep Dealer And Replaced The Module $550. It's Still Doing The Same Thing. It's Something To Do With The Security Of The Keys And Kill Switch. I Am Going To Sell This Car Because Of My Research. A Lot Of People Are Having The Same Issues. Toyota Camry Here We Come!!
I also have a 2000 Laredo. The battery is fine but it's like it's not getting fuel. I've had the fuel pump replaced and the filter changed but to no good. If I let it sit overnight, it'll then start and run fine. I'm sooo sick of this piece of junk.

i have a 2007 JGC laredo and it was doing the same (3.7L) it started when using the auto start on the key fob and it wouldnt start. a local mechanic said he pulled the codes and it was a security issue and he reset the codes it and it was fine for 2 weeks then did it again. all lights and dash functions are working, just no turn over. i tried pulling the fuse for the wcm for 30 seconds to reset it but it didnt work. battery shows 12+ volts. so i was reading that the solenoid wire comes loose alot so i wiggled the solenoid wire and IT STARTED. i hosed it down with corrosionX and its been cool all day now. probably corrosion on the connector, theree is very little protecting it from road water n gunk. i also removed the negative wire from battery while doing this so that may have reset the security system as well. not sure which worked. i thought it may be starter but couldn't get to it easily on the ground but i was able to reach the solenoid wire to wiggle it (the starter is buried, you need a lift to get to it.) I hope this helps, also, google TSB 08-007-08 REV. A. that is what i think it may still be, ill repost if it does it again. good luck, jeeps suck when the electrical system goes buggy!
We had the pigtails replaced in the starter and so far that has worked. That includes the solenoid wire, which does seem to be the big problem. We had a mechanic swear up and down that it was the wireless module, we told him it does not seem to solve the problem (according to everyone's online feedback), but he pushed us into replacing it, and $600 and 2 weeks later we had the same problem. Don't replace your module - replace the wires in your starter, which they referred to as the pigtail. It cost us $300 to have Jeep do it.
keywestjason answered 11 years ago
wouldn't start again today. i wiggled the solenoid wire and it started. definitely the problem. gonna get it fixed right tomorrow. i hope everyones fix is this simple. frustrating problem. they should not have used a blade connector, a nut n bolt would have been better
I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee - just purchased it in December. First time it left me stranded was about a month ago. Wouldnt start, "transmission over temp" flashed. My son jiggled something in the fuse box and it started. Three weeks later, same thing, same transmission over temp flashed, wouldnt start for several hours. Let it sit overnight and it started. I took it to my mechanic who has been trying to repeat the problem for about a week. I called the dealer where I purchased it, who referred me to the jeep dealer they do business with in Annapolis. I called them jeep dealer, the service manager told me that the "transmission over temp" will ALWAYS flash for a split second when the car won't start. I'm bringing the jeep in to his shop Monday morning. He said that it is his belief that the wiring to the solenoid / starter is most likely the issue. I asked him if it was the wiring what am I looking at in terms of cost - $400-$500 - which seems steep. Has anyone on this blog resolved their problem? If so, how?
Yes, we did exactly that. No further issues. Good luck!
Jenny thanks! So you fixed the wiring then?
Yes, the solenoid. They also referred to it as the pigtail.
I have had numerous emails about how to fix this issue. I will post it again.... Had the Jeep towed to dealer and they wanted $350.00 to replace the starter. Passed on that and brought car home. Removed the starter and had it tested at a starter rebuild shop. It tested fine. He suggested clean all the terminals. I removed the harness from the battery to the starter and had him check it. . He replaced a few inches of the yellow wire that actuates the starter solenoid. I cleaned every terminal on the piece of harness. Positive side and negative side. BTW, none of the terminals looked corroded. Jeep is starting just fine, for now. Time will tell. David

my girlfriend has a 2007 grand cherokee and we have been having this damn trasnmission over temp thing come up randomly for about a year now so it the "trasmission control module TCM" is that the problem replace that and it will go away?
cfavoright answered 11 years ago
so is the trasmission control module ther problem that will fix it ?? if we fix the TCM it will fix the problem?
My fix was replacing the starter and starter wiring harness. According to the dealer the starter and wiring harness is located in such an area where water from rain runs down in it. Eventually this causes the problem with that light coming on and the vehicle not starting. I had the work done in the summer and have not had issues since.
I have a 2008 Diesel Grand Cherokee. Both while driving and also when it is sitting idle several warning lights will start to flash. little squares will go around the gear indicator and it will flash "transmission overheating". The vehicle will than start to rev very high. If I stop and shut vehicle off it seems to reset itself. Took it to the dealer ...paid big dollars..they said I needed a new Transmission modular controller. The put it in said we were good to go....very next day....boom...same problem. Took it back....the have no answers. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can you help me?
My 2007 Grand Cherokee did not ever have an indicator light of "transmission overheating" and did not have the symptoms that you describe. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good luck....
I have a 2007 jeep GC awd 3.7l. I try to turn it over and just hear a click. New battery so I know that's not the issue. How do I get to that solenoid or "pigtail". My jeep is stuck in a store parking lot so help would be appreciated Cheers
Jeep dealership installed the new wiring harness to the starter and a new starter. Since both of those were installed - I have not had an issue. I had another person on this string of conversations confirm for me that the same repair was needed. Evidently, the starter harness/starter is located in an area under the hood that can get deteriorated by water draining. At least this is what I have been told and also read. Mine would just click when I turned the key.
I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I'm getting the SKIM Indicator coming on and when it comes on it will not start or if driving that is where it sits. It turns over but acts like it is not getting fuel. By reading up on the SKIM all it says is its an electrical issue. I'm not getting any transmission overheat like everyone else is saying. Sometimes it will start right back up but then sometimes it takes days before it will start back up. Ive heard there's some kind of starter control module that could be the issue. I'm not getting any codes either. Everyone here is saying just clean all connections to the starter and solenoid. Don't have money to be guessing so does anyone know what this could possibly be? Please feel free to email me at dewns777@gmail.com.... THANKS

I cannot believe how frustrating my Jeep 2007 grand cherokee is. First time I had this problem-- In Winter of 2012, my car was parked in a parking garage and wouldn't start (late at night) and briefly flashed a transmission over temp message as I was removing the key from the ignition. Had it immediately towed to a dealer (because I still had a limited warranty), and I don't remember exactly what the dealership fixed but the paper work I have from from that fix says "Necessary to repair battery to starter cable to correct" this cost $295 and it seemed to fix what ever the problem was for 2 years. About two months ago (April 2014) the Jeep had the same problem. It had been working just fine and all of a sudden it would not start (no crank, no noise, or anything). It flashed the same message "transmission over temp" when removing the key from the ignition. So I let it sit for about 12 hours. And sure enough in the morning it started. I drove it about 200 miles and about 2 weeks before the SAME problem occurred again. (Transmission over temp, would not start.) So I let it sit for about a week, in another week it started working then once again it stopped. So I had it towed to the dealer. The paper work from that dealer trip says "after touching starter solenoid wire to test for power starts every time now, removed started solenoid wire and clean and tighten as good as possible tried several times and starts every time now." That cost $166. Now (June 2014). Jeep is parked & won't start same message "Transmission over temp." This is BEYOND frustrating, I no longer feel safe in driving my Jeep anywhere. I have always kept up with the maintenance on this car and I would hate to have to get rid of it. What can I do to fix this problem.
clydewater answered 10 years ago
Check the Starter relay under the hood. You can swap out the A/C Clutch relay to see if it starts. Based on research that was a common problem with the 2006 models too. We spent 2 hours last Sat fixing my father's and it was a bad relay that sometimes would work and sometims not. It cost about $18.00 for a new relay. Dealers were USELESS in trying to get the car started. NEVER BUY A JEEP. PURE CRAP!!!! How they are so highly rated is beyond me
@Jessica - since I replaced the starter and starter wiring harness or pigtails I guess is what someone referred to them - I have not had the problem. I was having the same issue for several months - with the "transmission over temp" message. According to what I was told at the Jeep dealership - the starter and harness are located in an area under the hood that gets very wet when it rains and this is what leads to the deterioration of the harness and starter......
My girlfriend has a grand Cherokee 2005 3.7 and having starting issues. After a repair of the valves was done the car was nearly on E and I took it to get gas and after I started experiencing it want to cut off when turning and finally did. After trying to start it over and over it wouldn't and I was smelling a fire smell coming from the starter, is this a reason why it will not start, some one please help!

I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee that acts crazy when it's cold. I start it and it runs for up to 7 minutes then cuts off. It goes through this process for about 10 minutes or until it warms up then the same thing once it sits too long and gets cold again. No warning except perform service and dealership can't figure it out.........help please
CJ1963 answered about a year ago "According to the dealer the starter and wiring harness is located in such an area where water from rain runs down in it. Eventually this causes the problem with that light coming on and the vehicle not starting.".... YES that's the problem. The 2008 does not have a heat shield so the water shorts out the wiring. Our mechanic made a heat shield replaced the burnt wire and it resolved the problem last year. No other action was needed.
I seem to have the issue with my 2007 not starting after I use the factory auto start. previously if I let it sit for awhile and it would start, I used to auto start yesterday tried letting it sit and it still wont start. has anyone else had the issue due to the auto start?
If your car won't start and it say transmission temp It is just the wire too The Solenoid on the starter just clean it and do not replace the module it cost me 80$ to have it cleaned start just fine

i have an 06 GC v8 which i bought this time last yr. Had thr trans kver temp message come on several timeS. Several times it sisnt start. Also had a problem of it only going into 3rd gear..drove it in 3rd for a pretty longtime..unfortunately. this is going to sound dumb..but i have figured out how to beat the problem. When you turn your key..most usually do it rather slow..as each...."step" ..its hard to explain..anyways..if you turn it the key fast and just start it fast..all priblems seem to cease. I used to turn the key slow..snd everyime it would go into third gear and shift horribly..or do the trans over temp n not start. it also helps if your key fob is single..anythig else on yor keys can affect it....still waiting for fix after recall letter was sent to me last yr..but for me...turning the key fast fixed it.

I am having the same issue with my 08 grand Cherokee. Batter is good and I just had the starter and solenoid replaced about a week ago. Some days it starts just fine then later in the day it won't start. I am not getting any warnings on display though. Just clicks once when I try to start it. Anyone have any ideas since I don't have any warnings popping up. Thanks.
I got the same light (Trans Overheating) and the reservoir was empty. There is a jeep forum that states that 1.) this is a recall item and 2.) this may have to do something with the Trans cooler lines. Lines from Transmission to the radiator.

I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi. For over two years it had starting issues. Replaced the battery then the starter. Problem got worse. Then I started getting Transmission Over Temp messages and there would be a high revving sound. No guages were out of whack. If I turn the vehicle off then right back on, it's fine. Had a recall for an actuator and had that replaced. They said that would do it. Nope. Took it to a transmission shop and had the solenoid replaced. Nope, that wasn't it. Just took it back and had the cooling system flushed and some sort of filter replaced. The message came back on a few miles later. Transmission guy is stumped. If anyone has found a definite fix, I would be happy to hear it. Andrew...I have no recall for this issue. I have an ignition recall that they don't seem to have parts for. I will never buy another Jeep.
When the starter was replaced, did the mechanic replace the entire harness over the starter? Once I had my starter replaced along with the starter harness - the problem stopped. According to what I have read on-line, the starter is in a location under the hood where a lot of water pools on the harness - this could be rain or even dew in the cooler months (like spring or fall) I suspect.
have a 2006 jeep grand cherokee... same problems that start just like all above. There was no problem until they repaired the recall of ingnition tumbler. Now it wouldn't start again this past weekend. There are all of these possbilities of whats going on. Has anyone come up with a definitive answer? scheduled a tow from the house to dealership for tomorrow. Any true chrysler mechanics on here that can give a true honest answer?
had same problem in 06 jeep commander replace ignition switch in jeep and put bigger powered fuse and fixed problem and aint had prob for 1 year so far
I had this same exact issue. I took it to 2 difference mechanics and they couldnt figure out what the issue was. I had the starter replaced because they thought that was the issue. After spending almost a thousand dollars I found the problem was the the starter relay in the fuse box was bad. All I really had to do was replace the relay switch with a new one and it started working again. Havent had the problem since. I hope this helps and saves someone else a ton of money.
Having the exact same issue. How much is the starter relay and is it an easy fix?

I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I just read somebody replaced the fuel pump but it didn't help. Somebody told me it was the throttle body. My Jeep cranks and cranks and cranks and cranks and won't start. I just replaced the battery. I cranked it so much I burned out the starter. I replaced the starter but still having troubles with the crankity crank. I'm going to change my throttle body next week. The geeks have it for $157 delivered. I'll let you know.

I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cheerokee and this problem with the it not starting has been an ongoing disaster.. I try to start the Jeep after a while of driving around and it says "transmission over temp" and doesnt start.. I have been to the dealership so many times and have spent thousands on this but never get anywhere... Got Chrysler involved and they cant figure out either.. They all dont have any solutions that actually solve the problem.. There is something defective with the starting mechnisim in these vehichles...
David
I have a 2004 jeep that had the same thing the problem ended up being the compression ring around the fuel pump
Hey! I have a 2008 GC and I'm having this issue. The dealership says the drive train module is failing, but I haven't read that anywhere on here nor do I know anything about cars. I know people have talked about replacing the transmission control module. Is this the same thing? The dealership won't guaruntee their work so I'm a bit hesitant to jump into a 1000 dollar fix and need to keep emptying my wallet after.
I have a 2007 Grand Cherokee 20th the same issue. First, I had a leaky radiator that caused the transmission to overhear and the display showing "transmission overheating". After a replacement radiator, it worked fine for a couple of weeks and then it wouldn't start even though I was not overheating. The issue with it not starting happened when I backed into a parking spot and shifted from reverse to park. It did this to me on two separate occasions. Then recently, it wouldn't start at all. When the tow truck driver tried, he put it in neutral, let it roll forward a little and it started. Back to the dealership who is evaluating. I think it's electrical with the checks it goes through before starting and something is saying "don't start" . It may be some type of module or relay, but I don't know yet.
Had the same problem with not starting and the Trans Over Temp message Removed the lower engineer cover (4 bolts) to get to starter and the yellow pigtail connection was loose. Cut the zip tie holding the yellow wire to the red. Cleaned the female, cleaned the male tab and tweaked it a hair with needle nose to create a snug fit, re-conneted, re- ziped the yellow to the red wire to keep it secure and Jeep started right up. Great thread info. Saved me a tow, and someone selling me a starter I did not need. BTW, while looking for info on this issue, I did see a YouTube that shows you can replace the starter without removing the front drive shaft like the shop manuals say to (if you do need to replace the starter).

My 2007 Grand Cherokee has this Transmission Over Temp problem sporadically and can go days, weeks, or months between occurrences. Just recently was the first time I thought it had "died" as it didn't start after multiple attempts and was shaking like it never had before. Directly in front of a grocery store at 5:00pm on a Friday so I just left, came back a couple hours later and it started like nothing ever happened. I have had a difficult time diagnosing what type of driving, weather, etc. may prompt it but have had these experiences for well over a year. Have replaced the starter, but do not see myself spending any more money until someone is able to give a true fix, that lasts for 3-6+ months. Is anyone on this thread able to offer any follow up comments? I really hope it is as simple as an $18 starter relay. Other mentions: starter harness, yellow wire, TCM, compression ring, throttle body?

I'll update this post after I play with the solenoid wire and fuse box tomorrow Thnx! Brian M from Long Island NY

1-27-17 ....im updating my post above from 12-14-17 ....I have a 2007 gr cher laredo 4.7l v8..trail rated which has cross bars underneath to protect under carriage....so since it was a nightmare to get to the starter wires...i simply had the mechanic replace the starter and cut-recrimp new connectors on starter wires and problem solved. Just as a preventative measure I also replaced the starter relay which is under the hood it cost $18 at local auto parts store. ....all good car starts every time....so start with cutting & recrimping starter wires and this should solve the problem Brian M Long Island, NY
i posted also about my problem on this if anyone can follow up if their pigtail/starter wire fixed the trans over temp problem for them (Mine doesnt have problems with starting...just the random dash code while driving). maybe the not starting problem will come later on down the road...? Thanks! owner of 2006 Jeep Commander 5.7L hemi. thanks to the above user GRNEYZBLKVET631 for follow-up posting. Is your problem still gone? did you have the "trans over temp" code on dash too?
Did you ever figure out prob. My 07 jeep Cherokee is doing same thing wouldnt start this morning tell 10 times of trying

Sorry, I was never able to solve this. Traded my Jeep in a few months back, but was frustrated that it was never remedied. Seems like an awfully common problem for all 07 GC owners. Best of luck - and continue to post any updates if anyone finds a cure!
When it won't crank, has anyone tried to shift to neutral with the key in the ignition (turned one click to allow shifting) and then crank? The NAG1 transmission conductor plate has a reed switch "neutral safety switch" that is in series with the transmission temperature sensor. I'm wondering if the reed switch isn't opening when it should in park.
If all else fails have your mechanic check the cam sensors.
my 08 JGCL v6 was hit lightly in my driveway from the front, the hit knocked it out of park and it rolled across the street. cranked fine and I tested park and it held. a few days later the transmission over temp came on and car will only move in limp mode. I'm not sure if the driveway accident was the cause but I have put in a rebuilt ECM....still have TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP and in limp mode....any suggestions
I have an 06 grand Cherokee laredo 3.7 v6, mine is doing somewhat the same as the others on this string. When I go to start mine, the lights and everything works but when you try to start it, just clicking. Just changed the battery but it seems like something is draining it. It can do this, and I'll hook it up to a 10 Amp trickle charger for no more than 3 minutes and usually it'll start right up. Any help would be much appreciated.
Hi GuruV3KCG I’ve a 2007 Grand Cherokee CRD, and just today had the Transmission overtemp message come up when trying to start. Tried twice, no sounds or other error messages I noticed. Was in hurry fir appointment so removed ignition key and took wife’s car. About 6 hours later wanted to try starting again but battery dead, nothing working, no auto locking etc etc. The battery less than 6 months old. Zero other problems related up to this point, although dealership had it to replace high level break light a couple weeks back. Did you find any relationship of battery draining with the original transmission o/t message that all the contributors to this thread have mentioned, Cheers Nigel

Hi, Yesterday i drove off my driveway, made it one house and car die in the middle of the street. I attempted to start the engine and it started, but shut off. tried a few times, until the car started to ring the horn. and acting weird. It then, die. anyways, firgured out how to take it out of the Park to Neutral, pushed the car back to my driveway. Now, i just changed the battery. Car dashboard starts normally, shows a message of press the clutch and hit start/stop. I do, it looks like the system "electronically want to start" but no engine at all. I get two messages, power steering wheel issue and airbag. I hit the remote started, car beeps twice but doesn't start. check the fuses on the fuse box, but no luck. Very weird. it also show low on gas, which it is. but it should start the engine. This is a 2015 Jeep grand cherokee limited V6 AWD. Any feedback is appreciated.

Hello the wife's 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 3.7 v6 was flashing transmission over temp and not starting. Found out that can jump it with battery cables when it does this and it will start fine after a few attempts. Tried a few different things and found out that when getting to destination turning Jeep off and then starting it immediately after and holding key to start position for a few seconds it will start but struggles, doing this 3 times in a row solves the problem temporarily, it sounds like it has an easier time each time it is started and she has no problems starting jeep after following this procedure so for now to those having issue start Jeep 3 times after getting to destination and you shouldn't have a problem leaving destination. I plan on checking the wire harness to the starter like some of the posts suggest but for now the start 3 times has been working for about 2 weeks now. I will update this when i find a permanent solution.

Any update on your temporary fix? I started having issues with it about 4 years ago. At this time there was a recall out for the Wireless Control Module and we thought that it was that so we had it towed to Jeep to get it fixed, it wasn't that. Decided to replace the starter. That seemed to do the trick for a while then it started happening again, immediately took it to Pep Boys to get the starter replaced. They said the starter was fried (idk if that was true). Replaced the starter then and then started having issues right before coming out to California for school last fall, but hasn't acted up since then. I am going to try the yellow wire trick to see if that works when I get home, but I have absolutely no faith in the car to take it anywhere. I just want to get it solved.

@POSGrandCherokee at one point, I hit the starter with a hammer and that got the car started. Another point, I took it to a dealer and they cleaned / reconnected / tightened the solenoid wires or something. I got rid of my Jeep after it having left me stranded about 10 times with the problem of not starting, it is crazy they haven't figured out a permanent fix over 10 years later

@2013CRVHonda After you brought it to the dealer and they cleaned all the wires did that do anything to help it? I would love to trade it in for something but don't quite think thats in the budget. This whole yellow wire thing might be my last ditch effort though.
It’s the long yellow wire. Clean the terminal.. it’s in a bad spot. Gets road debris and moisture. Clean terminal. Problem solved.

@POSGrandCherokee, I remember it fixed it for a while, but as @John said, I think it is a spot prone to build up, so if it works for you now, maybe get it clean once every year or so after that
We’ve had our 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee for a few years. The starting issue began within 3 months of owning it. The dealer put in a new starter....and so it began. We replaced so many parts at great expense. I could never depend on this car and it left us and our kids stranded many times. FINALLY a neighbor who works on cars in his garage cleaned all the contacts and the problem was solved. After about a year and a half it started happening again. Our mechanic cleaned the contacts and it’s been fine for a while. I can’t believe that Jeep never addressed this issue and we will never purchase a Jeep again.
There is a recall on the ignition switch, i have problems
Step one, def do the yellow wire to starter pigtail thing. Yes, when you ask your mechanic he will look at you silly lol but I think making that connection is best place to start (all of this of course is AFTER you've checked your BIG 3-battery starter alternator..) after that is done, think about this TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP alternative measures—do you have coolant?! That reservoir thing on the side is like a BACK UP plan, I had to "prime"it first. Meaning after I put the brand new water pump on ($30 Amazon, plastic worked fine for me) and replacing the upper radiator hose cause it cracked open and needed to be replaced with a new clamp, you have to put a little coolant in that hose as well (hose end going towards water pump, filling the radiator cap is fine for the radiator and LOWER radiator hose) get the economical coolant from Wally World (that says ADD WATER! not the pre diluted stuff cause then you might need more than one bottle.. after you're poured a little to "prime" the new water pump THEN out the new clamp on your new upper hose . then WITH A COLD ENGINE/RADIATOR cap open take that cAp off then the Jeep on (mine is 2007 WK Laredo/base model) pour the coolant that you've diluted yourself inside till it's full. Let the temperature get to "normal operating temp" which pretty much just means dead center of hot & cold. Which will in turn open your thermostat (does your heat work ) so now the coolant will bubble a bit cause now it's moving etc etc.. Fill it up again to the top, do this once or twice till it's actually full while normal temp. When you can't add anymore put cap back on (a good cap is not expensive brand new ) THEN add coolant to that reservoir FILL LINE, not too much over that line (it's def there for a reason) you should be GOOD NOW. It even deleted my CEL downstream O2 sensor that was popping up frequently for me anyways... NOW my WK(wkjeeps.com ) was also cutting off ALL power when I'd turn the ignition. As DAVID mentioned above I thought it was ignition switch RECALL but somehow I looked up my VIN & found that it was already done before I purchased it but I couldn't figure out went resetting the battery would instantly give me power again and I could start it no problem (Google GOJEEP__remove both positive & negative battery terminals KEEP THEM SEPARATE FROM EACH OTHER! DON'T MESS WITH SPARKS OR PPL THAT SAY IT'S NOT A BIG DEAL! IT IS!. Leave them apart, go inside and turn your key off & on to get rid of that memory stuff your vehicle saves when disconnected. Then turn headlights on and off to do the same THEN RUB OR TOUCH THE NEG&POS terminals NOT WHILE THEY CONNECTED TO BATTERY OF COURSE! THAT WOULDN'T MAKE SENSE RIGHT?! touching them together while disconnected should get rid of the rest of that stored energy. Then just hook them back up POS first then NEG,, want to TEMPORARILY remove CEL so you can pass eCheck at the self serve eCheck )))) So yeah after resetting my battery I'd be good as new, usually until the next time I'd have to turn it on I mean. Sometimes it'd last for days, weeks months etc etc I just kept a small ratchet & 10mm socket in my center console, that's how much my Jeep would turn off... It got me thinking,, my terminal wires HAVE TO BE CORRODED!. You need some new fresh wire contacted on the metal part that is connected to your battery (I just did the positive cause the NEG looked pretty good to the naked eye,,POS was visibly corroded) get a good knife or real tools to expose both of those RED thicker wires, I cut open the smaller RED one kinda in the middle, I figured this was apart of the security or something so I just "spliced" those 3 POS/RED wires together then I used ELECTRICAL TAPE to keep everything together. THIS IS IMPORTANT SO NOTHING COMES APART WHILE DRIVING ETC! USE LOTS OF THE TAPE! YOU WANT A GOOD STRONG CONNECTION WHICH IS WHY ★I THINK★ THIS WAS ALL HAPPENING. all this worked for me and my Jeep so far, fingers crossed no issues yet and I'll get back on here if it does. maddog8806@gmail.com if you find another fix for any of these issues, please let me know so I'm not stranded with my family anymore. Hey does your alarm randomly go off at night and the dash says your trunk/hatch or whatever is open but it's visibly NOT OPEN like mine did so many times? It's that lock mechanism back there needing to be replaced.
I had same problem in 97 grand cherokee v6. The screw they use for the ECU causes it to short out wich made it stall back fire and wouldn't start and sometimes it did. Replaced the ecu with a diff type of screw that didnt short it out and fixed ran smooth for years after that
05 jeep Cherokee laredo Having same start issue with crank but no start. Haven't had any of the transmission overheat warnings. Starting with checking the yellow wiring tomorrow but in the meantime key fob has been not working intermittently as well and since one responder mentioned having the key fob be in good working order and with nothing else on the keychain I will handle that immediately with new batteries. Have been able to get the car to start after several attempts of non start by turning the key to the start position, in which just the battery starts but don't crank it at all. Turn back to off position. Repeat 2 more times. On off on off and then crank on the next try. Will update when I check wiring and replace batteries in key fob if it's whirling. But for now that temporary fix is starting the car up.
Hello Sir' I have a 2007 grand cherokee lar v6. I had a starter put in and anew fuel for the starter. My truck will not start. The dash broad lights up and it clicks 1 time. Can you please help me.
David it's been 3years since you wrote this about your Jeep and it's solenoid wiring or pigtail, I was wondering if it worked? And if so for about how long? Thank you.
Jeep continued to start fine. Vehicle has since been replaced by a 2016 Patriot.
I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For quite a while it would start up just fine, and then the engine would just cut off after a couple seconds. If you started back up it would start and run just fine. Now it has progressed to starting fine for days at a time, then BOOM, leave you stranded! We have replaced idle air sensor, ignition switch(2) and throttle position sensor. Reconnected the starter cellenoid wires. Started up and ran fine for several days, then = stranded again. After reading all the posts on here, of people with the same problems, we are hesitant to take it to a mechanic for fear of them charging us to replace lots of expensive parts that don't end up fixing the problem. Would lovesome help finding someone in Jacksonville Florida that is familiar with this issue.
