Transmission problem with my Sebring

Asked by gotoplessgirl Oct 29, 2015 at 06:38 PM about the 1999 Chrysler Sebring JXi Convertible FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We started having issues with our transmission after we came back from a road trip.  Sometimes it won't shift into the 4th gear and the RPM jumps up and then I have to pull off the side of the road and turn off the car and re-start it then it runs fine on the interstate until I come to a stop, and then I turn off the car again and restart.  My husband had a co-worker use his code reader and it read 734.  Does this mean it needs new input & output sensors, or a new transmission?  I'm praying it only needs new sensors.  Please advice.

One of the speed sensors on the transmission is bad. It happened on a 1999 Sebring we used to own. Do some "google" research and replace the speed sensors. If I remember correctly there are two of them.

We had our Sebring some years ago. When the speed sensor went out the transmission would only shift through the gears once. Then if the car was stopped it would hang in 1st gear and not shift up till the car was stopped and restarted. Sensor was fairly easy to get to and wasn't very expensive.

I replaced it myself and at that time the sensor was $20.00 from the dealer. Keep in mind that was 10 or 12 years ago. I tested the sensor with an ohm meter and the new sensor showed some resisitance and the old sensor showed open circuit.
