Is the 4 wheel drive automatic or have to be put in gear?

Automatic. No driver controls. When a wheel speed sensor detects a wheel turning at an rpm that it shouldn't be for the speed the car is going, it will apply more power to it or brake, whatever is applicable
FordNut is correct. On most AWD cars the 4 wheel drive is automatic and the computer controls it. My wife drives an AWD Infiniti and loves it. AWD is great in the snow.
I have a 2008 mkx AWD. I'm truly disappointed with the awd, which was one of the main reasons I bought it. I couldn't drive it up my driveway with sleet/ice. Only the front wheel will spin. But when on level pavement all 4 spins. My wife's beaten old subraru outback has no such problems.
Many cars including Front wheel drive and rear wheel drive have traction control which is great in many applications including driving on slippery roads. However; when your bogged down in heavy snow and just breaking free the worst thing that can happen is for the Traction Control to kick in and apply the breaks on any wheel. Doing so makes you lose any momentum you've gained and usually brings you to a stop. Why have so many manufacturers removed the control the permits you to disable the traction control. When disabled, the brakes are never applied and 9 times out of 10 you would have been home free, but no, the friggin brakes keep stopping you. The door knobs that bring out these engineering marvels obviously have never driven in real life conditions.
Is the mkt a front wheel drive
Go into you driver controls and turn off the traction control. That is the left control on a 2014 MKX. You have to be smart enough to outwit the car. Good luck1
More specifically to my above. On the left hand steering controls, Go To Settings, Select Driver Assist, Deselect traction control to Off. Happy Motoring barreling through snow and ice.
