My 2006 nissan altima 2.5 automatic transmission will sometimes not go into drive. It will go into reverse, but you have to manually shift it into 1 then 2, 3 and then drive to get car to move.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

only way to get car to drive when this happens is to shift manually from 1 through to drive.
After that car runs fine for rest of day.  Sometimes it shifts into gear hard.

Transmission failure, normally shift and lock solenoid or rear output speed sensor stops working but it would stretch gear

The car has been running with the same issue since then. It's basically a manual without the clutch

If your car is a "shifttronic" transmission (where it shows -/+ sign.. then your problem lies in computer on the transmission. If you have an older car with a regular PNRD12 display then your problem could be the output speed sensor or lock and shift solenoids. The output speed sensor is told what gear the transmission should be in by the engine RPMs. Then now they have an auto transmission to electric which the changes of the gear is measures by pressure sensors. All these items have been listed will bring the check engine light on. If there is any other fault e.g. Transmission stops and would not go unless you restart car that's a transmission failure. Good Luck
