What does AFM stand for?

Asked by markthespark61 Aug 25, 2014 at 10:32 AM about the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: General

I know it is the system that turns 4 cylinders on and off.  But, what does it stand for?
I want to know how much it might cost me to have it turned off completely.

Active Fuel Management. Horable idea now. And back in the 1980's when Government Motors called it 4-6-8.

It's more a question. I just bought a 2011 Silverado V6 5.3L Crew Cab, and when I get to about 60 mph my truck starts to do this rev or something is switching on or off in the engine! The rpm's are going up slightly! Is this the AFM causing this?

@ Mark. Sorry for late response but what you are experiencing is likely the torque converter slipping. Sometimes just checking level of trans fluid or better to have it replaced. My AFM system has never done what you described.

@ Mark (Mscharank) I forgot to add that the transmission pressure valve/pump may also be going bad and it will also cause what you described.
