Brand new car with steering trouble.

Asked by Whitehall1843 Sep 09, 2012 at 08:53 AM about the 2012 BMW 5 Series 535i Sedan RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my new 2012 bmw535i drifted to the right  which I discovered on tthe drive home from the dealership the day I
bought it. The computer was rebooted, wheels aligned, and tires switched from side to side.  It does not have the
optional electronic dampers.  My dealership seems to be stumped at this point.  The car actually goes straight if
you drive down the middle of the road; but if you are in the right lane, you have to constantly pull the wheel to the
left or you will be running off the road in 5 seconds or so. This is unsafe and annoying  and pretty much makes me
feel like I wasted $50,000 unless I can correct this.  Do any of you out there have any expertise in this area?

If it drives straight down the middle of the road then its not an issue with the vehicle. What your having a problem with is road crown, when roads are built they sloped at a downward angle to help with water drainage. This can have a drastic effect on how vehicles drive on them by making you think your alignment is off. But what the dealer should do if find the roads you mostly drive on and adjust for that road crown so the vehicle will drive straight. I hope this helps don't get discouraged the car you have is a great BMW.
