Summer vs. all season tires for Mazda 2

Asked by lbrown1179 Jun 30, 2014 at 02:22 PM about the 2012 Mazda MAZDA2 Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi,
I love the way my 2012 Mazda 2 handles, except during the 1 or 2 months when we have
icy roads in Tidewater, VA. It came with Yokohama Summer tires, 185/55-15.

When it's time to replace them (at 33K miles, the dealer rates them as 4/32"-6/32"), should
I opt for all-season? Or just call in sick on snowy days. ; )

All-season tires cost more and I worry they'll feel sluggish.

Thanks,
Laurie

All season are alot tuffer tire ,longer road wear, but ruffer riding in the long run,if you want to keep smooth ride on that zoom zoom, stay with summer.

Sadly, and in that size, your choices will be limited anyway. The days when 15" tires were commonplace are gone. Looking on TireRack.com, they only list 11 available tires in that size. Some are Grand Touring, not what you want to retain your Zoom-Zoom. Many are All-Season rated and only one Ultra-High Performance tire, a Kumho. Personally I've not had good luck with Kumho's, especially their HP series of tires. I'd steer you away from anything Good Year too. IMO their road tires are nothing but overpriced junk... again, personal experience. Any HP tire you buy is liable to wear faster, but if that's not an issue and you don't mind replacing tires more often, that'll be you best Zoom-Zoom factor.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp? tireMake=Toyo&tireModel=Proxes+T1R&partnum=855VR5T 1R&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes The price is not too bad, but they only have a 280 wear rating, meaning you'll be replacing them often. And of course driving in snow and especially ice, you'd be taking your life and others in your hands.

I didn't realize how little I know about tires. Thanks for your responses and for pointing me to a good resource for tires. The reviews are helpful.
