The lifetime filter that the original post refers to is a factory non-replacable non-washeable filter. It is designed by ford to never need maintance of any kind. How it works is any one's guess. I have yet to find any information on the internet on it's makeup or functionallity.
The original air filter on all Focus' from 2005 on are a complete non-serviceable housing. There is a glass tube that has a graduated colour scheme to indicate when the filter needs to be replaced. Nothing is lifetime and I heard 100 to 150,000 expected life on the filter. The entire housing has to be replaced when the time comes - cost here in Canada is from $420 to $600 for the assembly
What if the owner, after warranty expiration, (100,000 mi) tried to reverse flush out the filter, with repeated ordinary water (poured in)? Shake well , drain, then attach a powerful shop vac, and suck air/moisture out for about 30 min? The MAF indicator still indicates A-OK, and the car runs as good as, or better than before. It is a PITA to get at and remount.
