Just took our Ford Escape to dealership as it is making a horrible racket underneath. Was told by another party it was the heat shield full of rocks. Dealership says it is the muffler. .?ing the dealership as the noise is prevalent even when u r stopped. Pls hel this 66 yr. old woman. Car has approx. 55,000 miles and I bought it used.

I would take the car to a few other places to see what they say, I wouldn't rely on only on two opinions, rocks don't sound right unless you were driving the car off road, please hit helpful if you found this information useful, thanks...

Thank you for the concern. Still debating over this issue.
It happens that the heat shield has a slight loose connection on the back of the car. The vibration caused by the loose connection could be enough to cause this kind of noise. The story of the rocks is highly improbable because, even if you drive on gravel roads, the gravels will not go around the heat shield.
Something loose in the muffler may still make noise when sitting idling. Listen to your dealer.
