can the distance to empty be adjusted for the low fuel light on a 2013 explorer

Your vehicle is new, so there should not be a problem in this regard, but try to fill up at a quarter tank or little lower. As the years go by crud will accumulate in the tank. Don't risk sucking stuff into the fuel system.
