how to tell if altinator is bad an not the battery?

my car starts with a jump but once I shut off after driving for an hour or so,it will not restart.What is causing this malfunction?

Probably the easiest way to fix this is to have the battery tested at a parts store. Replace if it's bad. Original battery would be five years old, that's old. But if it's good, then test the alternator. Replace if it's bad. It will be one or the other. Not much chance it's both at the same time. Battery is easier to replace and same price as an alternator.
