Lots would ask this question but i think it all comes down to what you really like and your driving habits EG i own a Turbocharged Subaru and if im mindful of the way i drive i can get almost 27MPG but if i lean on it il barely hit 17mpg.

The Mazda CX-5 at over 30 MPG average is by far your best bet. Nothing is even close, and it is generally considerably LESS than the RAV4, CR-V, Sportage, etc. All the same bells & whistles, but much better on gas at less, this is an easy choice IMO.
It also depends on the Year of the Car. More current years have better Miles per gallon because of increased fuel efficiency. We own a 2014 Mazda CX5 Grand Touring w/Four Wheel Drive. Our car is 1.5 years old with 11K miles on it. Our combined City/Highway mileage is 26.9 miles per gallon. And according to the head mechanic at my dealership, that number should continue to increase. He said that as cars age, their engine parts wear about, and run smoother and more efficient. That is true, as I've seen it with my car. In the beginning months of ownership, I was only getting in the 24 mpg range. And as my mileage increase, so did the efficiency.,
