2000 dodge durango wont start

Asked by Athena Jan 08, 2016 at 12:56 PM about the 2000 Dodge Durango SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We lost our key, we never had the fob since
the lot we bought it from never did either.
We couldn't afford $175 for the lock Smith
to come to us, but he had us take out the
door lock and was able to make a key.
Replaced the door lock, SUV turned over my
fiance drove maybe 5 blocks and it died.
Just shut down going like 15mph. Won't
start back up, sounds like it's not getting
fuel when there is enough in the tank. It
starts but the engine doesn't turn over. Help!

Well, you don't need a programmed key so your problem could be in the fuel or spark. Check for gas at the gas rail there should be a fitting that looks like the one on your tires, push the inner stem with a small screwdriver or a piece of wire hanger right after you've cranked the engine, be carefull if there's pressure, it'll shoot out on your face or you can borrow a pressure tester from auto store if there's pressure, you'll then check for spark

He did the spark. We have fuel and spark. Could it be the security system? Even though it let them drive for a few blocks? It has a child safety feature. Where the locks lock at 15/20mph. There's an alarm but the only reason we knew it was there cus I somehow set it off on accident, sounded horn flashed lights, unlocked and locked door and it shut off, that was months ago.

Ok well since you don't have the remote to reset it, just disconnect one cable from the battery, wait a few seconds and before u reconnect the battery cable, turn your ignition key to on position and then reconnect the battery this will disable the alarm Now try starting it

Disconnect the battery for 10min. Turn your ignition on and connect battery. Should have bypassed the alarm.
