Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So tonight I went to start my journey and  it won't

I just had the same problem and it ended up being my battery. It was enough power to turn on the lights raido and everything except to start it. It was a pain in the butt to change it, but at least it's working.

Same thing happened to me this morning! All the lights inside & out worked, it locked and unlocked with no prob, just won't kick over. Wondered if it was the battery.

Joe where is the entry to turn key? I have a 2013 and cannot find any entry. My car was fine all day no slow start then come out to head home and battery had juice like everyone says but wouldn't kick over. Mechanic said it could be the battery but aaa tried to jump it and still nothing. I'm scared of what it could be and I'm a struggling single mom. Please any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance

to those who do not know how to "turn it on" to put the vehicle in Neutral - turn key to "on" position. should be able to move the gear.

Joe is correct its not a battery issue for those still lost. Its has to do with the security system which has been an on going problem with dodge chrysler. I'm sure they are very aware of the issue but refusing to make the proper adjustments to fix it. But any ways turn the car to the on position do not attempt to crank just press the brake move shifter to to Neutral "N" Do not remove your foot off the brake the car might roll lol. But finish turning the key over an there you go your car will crank.

Thank you Joe AND Larry. Your tricked worked. Just to clarify the "On" mode Joe and Larry mention is actually the "Run" mode in my 2013 Journey Crew 3.6L V6. Push the start/stop button twice to get into Run mode. Both times I have been unable to start engine I tried to start the engine without the FOB within range. At that point I think the engine goes into some kind of anti-theft mode as Larry mentioned.

Thank you !!!!!! Waiting roadside found this comment and bingo. Now I am on the road. I cannot believe it. So glad I didn't have to pay for a tow or a shop charge. Note in my 2010 Journey I turned to "ON' position and pressed on brake (which it wouldn't go down) tried to shift to neutral but it wouldn't allow it to slide out). Still worked by going through the motions. Turned over like it should have.SO GRATEFUL FOR THIS POST!!

I purchased a 2014 used Dodge Journey in April. Out of the first 134 days I had it, it was in the shop 66 days and at my home 68 days. The battery kept going dead if not started or driven for 36 hours. The problem was traced to the electric tail gate lock, and the CD player, both are tied into each other. When those 2 Items were replaced my problem ended

This worked for my 2016 keyless journey. It must have been in some kind ok security or lock down mode because the brake would not depress and the engine would not start and i could not shift it out of park. To clarify the instructions: 1. With brake not depressed, press start button until it is in the run position. 2. Then depress brake 3. Then gear shift should release, put it in nueyral. 4. Then push start button. Voila! It should turn over!!

I have had this happen 4 times now! 1st time tow truck driver got it in neutral and jumped it......no problems for a month. 2nd time was told battery needs replaced. Did that. 2 months later dealership told me that ingnition needed replacing. Did that. Yesterday tried every "trick" and then it made a strange noise and NOTHING. Towed to dealership to be told battery dead, yet won't address the initial issue of not starting and saying key not detected. Selling this vehicle this week. I am over it!

How do you remove the push start button on a 2013 Dodge Journey?

My 2015 Journey has 52k,three certified mechanics spent more than 2 hours diagnosing the problem and, only concluded that it was a computer program error or,push start button malfunction. They recommended I have it towed to the Dodge Dealership because it was above their abilities. My solution was to simply disengage the positive battery cable, cutting the power and rebooting the computer.

Recently I noticed when I activate the left turn signal on my 2014 Journey the rear tail/turn lights both flash. When I turn on the right signal, only the right side flashes. So I did a walk around with the left signal on. The light just beneath the driver door, the fender light and the left and right rear tail/turn lights flash but nothing on the front or center right side. I have checked flasher, bulbs, wiring as best I can see it, fuses, took apart the signal lever on the steering column to investigate, nothing makes any difference. I'm thinking this has to be something so obviously simple I just can't see it. Any thoughts? Help? Greatly appreciated.

I have a 2014 Dodge Journey which I purchased on 1/23/18. Had the vehicle a month and it died when I came out of drug store. It had NO power. I called AAA for a jump. Battery checked okay, but still had no power. Had to be towed to dealership. They said they diagnosed it as a bad fuse box under the hood. They are still waiting for a part, but it has been there a week now. I am not sure if that will be the cause of it, but we shall soon find out whenever the part gets in.

I would be interested in to know why they say that. Have a 2014 with no power at push button or radio. It is like it does see that you are trying to start it

I got my car back from the shop. They said it was a faulty TIPM. This is the Totally Integrated Power Module. AKA fuse box under the hood. It was replaced and they said it started right up. After reading, it seems that there are a lot of issues with this thing...

I have a 2009 dodge journey. I had all kinds of problems radio when off, key fob would not turn, the car won’t turn on, losing power while driving and couple times when off while driving. I replaced the battery, the key fob, the module for the started and almost changed the hole computer at Dodge’s advise. I noticed that the battery is too small for this car, so I decide to go easy add a cable from the battery to let the engine to get direct from the battery as someone suggested in this page, but it did not work completely until I added a starter solenoid. One month so far and runs fantastic! With a 20-dollar fix. I Wish I would have read this page sooner and to save someone to spend hundreds of dollars.

In the 2010 Dodge Journey, try replacing the various fuses and relays that are used to start it first. These fuses and realys are cheap and you can replace them yourself. Just google the fuse box diagram and go to the local parts store.

Hello I would like to tell everyone of the problem that you are all having has nothing to do with the battery or fuses or really anything else that your doing to fix the problem but one person even talked about the security problem well he's close, it is a safety issue everything that you do only resets the computer and wipes the problem out for awhile the whole thing is the neutral safety switch which is built into the transmission yes by turning the key and placing it into neutral it will start, to fix the problem is not cheap. Chrysler knows about the problem but will not tell you about it or do anything to fix it either. It is up to all of us to get onboard and complain about it to the and to the government on there Webb cite with enough complaints then something can be done about it, Chrysler doesn't want to be held responsible for the cost no manufacturer does.

To get Chrysler to get on board with fixing the problem go to the Government Webb site and look for the Safety and recall section of it and file a complaint with them about it

Hi guys, I am suffering the same problems you are.2010 dodge journey and it does everything you have mentioned. My problem is ongoing for 2 years.I have spent a lot of money trying to fix with no luck yet. Chrysler is aware just like someone stated on this page. I spoke to Chrysler while my car was at the dealership for diagnosis we were on a 3 way call. Chrysler was willing to replace TIPM at their expense but the mechanic at dodge refused to say that would fix the problem :( you can Google recalls on your year, make and model and see what I am talking about. Good luck everyone. My car is back in the shop right now and yes we all need to file compaints

Went out this morning to fire up my 2013 Dodge Journey. Got the message no key detected. Ooops, key was in the house. Came out and it wouldn't start. Got my wife's key, it wouldn't start. so drove the other car to breakfast. Came home and used the key fob to start the car remotely. it started fine. Starts with the dash button now too. I suspect it may have been some kind of security feature to deter tampering. Sad to read about the troubles some of you have had with your Journeys. I have about 144,000 miles on mine and have done nothing buy change fluids and tires in all that time. My thanks to all of you who have addressed starting problems.

I HAVE A 2010 DODGE JOURNEY THAT LEAVES ME STRANDED ALL THE TIME. I CAN GO TO WALMART, PARK THE CAR, COME BACK OUT TO LEAVE AND AFTER PUTTING KEY IN THE IGNITION IT WILL NOT CRANK. I CAN TURN THE KEY ON AND PUT THE GEAR SHIFTER IN NEUTRAL AND CRANK THE CAR. VERY FRUSTRATING! BATTERY, BATTERY CABLE, STARTER, ALTERNATOR, IGNITION SWITCH AND A TRIP TO THE DEALERSHIP TO MAKE SURE KEY WAS STILL PROGRAMMED PROPERLY. NO HELP FROM DEALERSHIP. I HAVE MADE A COMPLAINT AT SAFERCAR.GOV AT THE NHTSA.

I’m having issues as well and did a parasitic draw test to find out that my radio is drawing 4amps while in sleep mode. Gotta find out how much it will cost to replace. I tried the put in nutral and cranking but that didn’t work because my battery was dead 3 days after I replaced it. By the way it’s a 2010 Dodge Journey 3.5 liter. Worst buy ever.

I’ve had the same issue the only thing haven’t tried yet is actually changing the safety switch. Mine didn’t start in neutral but miraculously after about an hour it started with key fine. Has happened lots. 2009 Journey. I’ve only had 8 months we’ve changed a lot, the alternator 5 times, starter twice, belt, the computer. And still it persists. Pos. I hate this demon car. My mechanic didn’t know what it was so we sent it to a dealership they diagnosed the computer. But it’s still happening... had it back two weeks. I don’t want to put any more money on the damn thing. Where do I post a complaint?

I write from Italy, I have a 2010 rodge dodge with automatic transmission, bwd engine. It is the third time that it goes off while I am driving, it seems to be doing it in deceleration. I tried to defrost the deodorizer in the suction and it was re-ignited. The mechanic says it could be the diesel pump on the right side of the engine, called the tandem pump. Has anyone had the same problem ??

I have a 2012 Dodge Journey SE....Last couple weeks noticed the radio would stay on longer after I opened the door and shut the car off not much but enough to where I noticed. Last week the car wouldn't start and the push start button was flashing when I tried. Lights and radio came on and it said Key not detected. Jumped it and started fine and worked fine until this am. Same thing jumped and started. Moved it to my neighbors to idol since I was at work and it shut off as soon as it was put into park. The mechanic is trying to say its the computer that isn't reading key fob? Anyone have any help??

Dodge journey 2015, complete loss of electrical power. Good battery, good alternator and good starter. After lots of troubleshooting, ended up being a bad positive terminal and lose alternator plug. My car sat for a whole week. As simple as it sounds it apparently was hard to diagnose.

HVAC was the problem with my 2016 Journey, thankfully, it was covered, but now, the journey did not start one day. It wouldn't catch at all. After leaving it alone a few minutes, it did start. The problem now is the engine light is on.

My 2015 Dodge Journey (push to start) just did this today. My power was completely out. No radio no lights nothing. AAA came out and tested the battery but it was 94% and that wasn't the problem. So I looked on you tube (there is literally nothing you can't find on there) and I came across a video that explained that the car has a unknown security system that locks the car down. I put that information together with a comment on here that said to unhook the positive battery cable for 30 seconds and it will reset the computer. Low and behold it worked. The battery is located behind the front driver side tire behind the wheel well panel. Dumb place to put a battery. Lucky for me my brother can fix almost anything in the world and he did it with no issue. My car is working now and I'm leaving this message to anyone else who may have this issue. You'll need a heavy duty floor jack along with the tools you use to change a flat and a screwdriver to pop off the clamps that hold the panel on.

Msuneek I always have had issues off and on with starting car since I bought it (brand new) I can't get break to go down to start.the car when it starts acting up. May 2018: Issues starting the car at airport short term parking airport jump started car. Dealer said I needed a new battery (replacement.) 140.00 +70.00 install Sept 2018: Car dead in garage after sitting for 2 days.Tow company could not get the car to start.. Dealer said Alternator is bad, but battery was good. Replaced Alternator. Jan 2019: Car dead AGAIN in garage after sitting for 2 days. Tow company can't get car to start.. Dealer called HEATING/AC module WONT TURN OFF even though car had no power and my battery is now dead. Replacing module and getting another new battery (under warranty)...I wonder if this is a fire hazzard. This car is a life sucker and dodge needs to stop making it. I'm also on my second set of brakes with (Rotors)and my4th battery and I still say after all this it won't be fixed. Sorry for the rant but this darn car.

If anyone is interested my 2013 journey went into the shop for failure to start again...Dodge dealer finally did a parasitic drawl test, can you imagine finally they trouble shoot. Test revealed a faulty HVAC/ Heating module. I was told the module never turnt off even though the car was off and this was killing my battery. The vehicle seems to be running just fine and has better pickup then before ......but I give it 5-6 months before it stops running again the new battery and alternator took 4 months before it stopped working. I still think Dodge needs to stop making this vehicle.

I've seen all year models here but a 2011, I got in the car and tried to turn it on..no key detected, I thought, well that's odd, it's in my purse, so I try again, no key detected. I have been having issues with the key fob and had to replace battery on it before, so I sit and wait a minute and try again..still no key detected. Husband then comes out to say..hey! You can't start the car without they key (in his hands)...OOPS! I grab the key, start the car and reverse out of the driveway. I barely get out of my drive when all lights start coming on and car starts sputtering. I reverse and go back to my driveway, barely make it up the incline of my drive, put it in park and just as i'm going to power off, the car dies...no lights, no radio, nothing..it's just a black void on my panel. I'm going to wait till tomorrow morning, try the 'trick' listed here...but I'm a little worried about being on an inclined driveway. I've never had this issue with the key fob security before, so we shall see if this works. I'll try a new battery..after several years it's probably time anyway, but I can't put more than that into it...Yall say a car prayer for me!

Last week I parked my 2016 Journey at the airport on Sunday, came back on Tuesday and car wouldn't start. Tried all the tricks listed, finally had to get it towed to mechanic. After 4 days of them trying to fix, they replaced one module where they thought the electronics were shorting. THEN they had the audacity to tell me that the car problem was actually that the gas tank was bone dry. What?? I had filled the tank just before I drove it to the airport (and had noted even though the tank was full, the gas gauge only showed 7/8 full). So unless someone siphoned out the gas in a secure airport parking lot with cameras all over the place - that car was not empty. Has anyone else had a mechanic downright lie about that to cover up the horrible Dodge electrical issue?

I have a 2014 Dodge Journey R/T 3.6 liter. Just recently I have noticed that when I park it overnight for sometimes over 10 hours before going back to work it seems to start fine. but, after having it parked at work for maximum 7 hours it doesn't start. I had to have it boosted a couple times this week. booster cables are on for 5 seconds and away it goes. when it doesn't want to start I have the hard brake issues that everyone seems to be having as well....I had to get it boosted again today and the short drive home I had the check engine light go on.... I had it go on this past winter when I noticed I was loosing a bit of oil in my garage floor overnight. mechanic said it was the oil cooler leaking and when the temperate outside warmed up the problem would disappear; which it did. I am wondering if any of those issues are a combined problem the has a simple answer to it

2013 Dodge Journey, have had enough and will probably replace it as soon as possible. Right out of warranty the Bluetooth stopped working, module replacement costs $600, no thanks. Then the car was having some electrical issues and dealer told us to replace battery which we did, still no luck. Later dealer diagnoses some computer module that was going crazy and that fixed all issues. January 2019, car dies, key fob not being detected, can't compress brake pedal, boasted it up, went to the dealer who told us to replace battery again. Now September 2019, everything was working fine till today when once again car wouldn't start. Random replace AWD message came on screen, key fob was not being detected and break pedal locked up again. Got a boast from a neighbor and car started up but check engine light is now on, battery was just replaced 8 months ago. At this point I'm probably dumping the car as soon as possible. No idea what the issue is now. Dodge has to get their electrical issues checked, great engines but some of the worst technology out here, seriously it's absolutely ridiculous. Never buying Dodge again even though I love me some hellcats, these issues have turned me off from the brand.

I bought this vehicle 5 months ago everything was fine all of a sudden the alternator went out I change that and also put a new battery in but even before that the car did the same thing it did a clicking sound like it had turn on some sort of anti-theft system so what I did there's a video on YouTube where this guy makes it click 5 times to the on position wait for the gauges to come back down and starts up like nothing but I do the same thing and it doesn't help I spoke to dodge corporate office and the guy gave me a good tip once the truck started for me to lock it from the inside not use the key and it did that for a while it started but now all of a sudden it started doing that again a bunch of clicking sounds.

Ok, my son and I just replaced the battery 2012 Dodge journey sxt. Now it's doing what everyone's here is doing. I tried all the tricks, but that's killing the new battery I tested to make sure it was a good one. Back story that I believe is relevant. My car would jump back for the past three years. I replaced the motor mounts. Still did it. The an would come on and stay inon. The windows would act funny. All while it still started up and ran really good. I believe it was a power problem all these years and I basically fried the system by replacing the alternator and battery. The kickback on the engine STOPPED. Instantly. It didn't happen for almost two weeks, until she died. I tried to make it do it, but it wouldn't. All I did was take my foot off the gas and the kick would jerk the car. Also doing the tricks, my dash went INSANE and looked like it was shorting out. What are the things I could do myself before I've got to turn it over to a mechanic to finish. I see starter, ignition switch, couple of sensors. Is that it? Anything else I'm missing that I can do? I haven't worked on this car much and am feeling overloaded. We've had it five years.

I started having problems with my journey after I had to replace a frozen battery. Not even two months after I replaced the factory battery my alternator went bad. I have had nothing but trips to mechanic and electrical problems. Now I’m on my second battery and alternator just to find out after taking it to a different mechanic that the battery I got sold is too small for the vehicle. I currently have a 525CCA and it needs at least a 650CCA to run properly! This has been a pain for sure

I had the same problem with my 2010 Dodge Journey. For no reason it would not start. tried the extra cable to ground the starter. It worked for a while long story short I tried all the suggestions I could find with short term results. Finally after spending countless hours of my own time and money I took it to a garage which specializes in electrical on cars and in 1/2 hour and $267.00 had it fixed. It was because of the location of the starter ( poor design) it had a lot of corrosion on the wires. Two years of trouble free driving AWSOME.

I have a 2010 Journey at times I would just get a click and that all so I went to the dodge dealer and he said it was the starter but I could not see it being the starter because I had it towed home twice and it would start so I change the battery in the key fob and every time it clicks I get a new battery for the key fob 2and ahalf years change it twice.

My 2013 SXT wouldn’t start. Battery light and check Engine light on. Everything would power up. Checked starter, battery, relays, fuses. Ended up taking it to get diagnosed. Turns out there’s some kind of wire under or around the passenger seat that came disconnect that sends a signal to the push start or starter. I can’t remember which one. Any way, the shop plugged it back in and the car has been running like a dream! Just figured I’d throw that out there for any one else that’s been having similar issues

I have a dodge Journey 2012. It shuts off while driving. Trying to push the start button Journey will not start only rattle. I changed out battery, throttle body, gas pedal, put new air filter on. All connection are tight and solid going to battery, alternator, and controls. When it will start it will shut off and then braked lights stay on, the traction control is on and now it says -40. what in the heck is wrong with the 2012 Dodge Journey's. What is wrong with this possessed car? the brake pedal is also hard to press when trying to start.

Mine is a 2010, bought it in2013. I usually just turn my steering wheel and then it will start but no one else has mentioned it. My old mechanic said it had something to do with resetting the transmission. Didn't work today. Call the dealer, he said try the tilt. In the meantime I shut off the radio and air just because they we bugging me. Still didn't start. Got out of it because the freaking thing kept hanging up my cell call, hate that, can't make a cell call without the vehicle taking over. Got back in, did nothing and it started. I can't afford a mechanic, that's why I bought one with warranty but I'm afraid now that it's 10 here comes trouble. EVERY dodge I have had had this starting issue. Always solved with turning the steering wheel. Hoping today is a one of...

^^^Someone mentioned turning the steering wheel and it will start. This has happened to me also! I note that when the vehicle is off and will not start ... the steering wheel is not "locked". I am able to get the vehicle to start if I turn the steering wheel until it "locks". This issue has been happening in my 2009 Dodge Journey for at least 3 years. Car is currently undriveable in my driveway ... won't start and nothing mentioned above has worked....including turning the steering wheel.

Hi All, i have 2014 Dodge journey, wife called me last night 12/11/20 indicating car wont start message Service Park assist. Checked on utube where they mentioned to press start button 5 times wait then hodl break push button when on run and it should start, didnt start but lights were on in car and radio working etc. When i came home to try again did same thing, the journey started to freak out overhead lights started to blink then power went completed dead, then in front of vehicle it was making a clicking noise, I disco'd the negative cable noise stop, tried to jump nothing, tried to charge battery overnight nothing. Unfortunately car going to mechanic today just before the holidays. Have to talk to mechanic as the vehicle is still under warranty. This vehicle is not well engineered AT ALL ! and this safety thing is not logical but as mentioned we all need to report this. im including a link https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2014/DODGE/JOURNEY/SUV/FWD#recalls please all file complaints here will try to do further research and will reply back after mechanic checks, hopefully not a big bill

2019 Journey GT. Like others no start but lights etc worked. Tried AAA jump start - no good. Towed to dealer who called next day. It started for them but no codes - so no fixes. Wife had same problem at church a week later and again 2 weeks later. Saw this fix on YouTube: When seated push 'run' button to off; open and close the door; with foot off brake push button 5 times (now in 'run' position); wait for gauges to settle; press and hold brake pedal; push and hold 'run' button; should start. Ours did twice so far. I hope this helps.

Melvina; Hello everyone I have a 2015 Dodge Journey and I'm experiencing the same problem my vehicle will not start, but it's getting good power. I just filed a complaint with nhtsa.gov website, click on report a safety problem and filed my complaint. You will need to have your vehicle vin number when filing. Please file a complaint to get these vehicles recalled all model from 2010 to 2017 or older model that's having the same issues with their vehicles. This is the only way to get a recall on these vehicles.
