problem with trunk wont open on 2013 ford focus
Asked by GuruV4396 Jul 31, 2018 at 10:30 AM about the 2013 Ford Focus SE
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have 2013 ford focus sedan One day I pressed the Trunk Release on my
key and blamo.....it didn't pop open. Tried the Manual without any luck. Had
to crawl thruough the back seat and pull the release cord in the trunk.
The Focus was purchased from the Ford dealer on Dec. 2017. I have to
take to dealer for repair and don't want to be taken advantage of. Any Advice
would be appreciated. Thank You, Marlese

If you copy & paste the following address, it seems like it could be your issue. Basically, the loom in the trunk has a sharp bend and it tends to weaken the wire(s). Try checking this location for any visible issues with the wires. The location is on the passengers side, in the trunk, near the rear deck. You may need to pull off the electrical tape to tug wires individually. Hope this helps... https://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/mk3-focus/312776- sedan-owners-watch-potential-wire-failure-trunk.html
Yes, Thank you for your reply.I found that on you tube. The wires in my focus looked fine. So Dealer here I come. At least here will be suggestions before the diagnostic fee. Lol. Darn electric cars anyways. There is a message that pops up everytime car is started "Trunk Ajar"
Bingo. Electronic trunk release had stopper working on my 2012 Focus. A pain since only way to open was through backseat emergency release. I checked the wiring harness in the trunk as you recommended and there is was. A broken wire! Used a twist connector and bam. Trunk worked great. Thanks so much. Great fix!

@MGM_Mobile_Electronics thank you for that. i almost never comment on vehicle threads where i'm not registered, but just wanted to thank you and bump this for anyone having problems. your answer was the case on a 2012 Ford Focus
thankn you for the post, i found a broken wire also, hatch work now, thanks a ton
This was the exact fix for my 2013. Went out, and as soon as I pulled the emergency latch, I could see the bare wire sticking right at me. tied together, trunk latch works as new. FORD, you need to recall this, this is ridiculous!
thank you found the same problem on a 2013 ford focus
Same here. Looked almost exactly like in the photo above.
I have a 2012 focus with this issue, but when i checked the wiring there are two black wires broken. I do not know which wire is which. Do I have to go to the dealer or is there a way I can figure out the correct wire to reattach?

I will look for some diagrams and get back with you by tomorrow afternoon. If I can't find the information, you may consider replacing the entire harness. Depending on the part you need, it should cost between $25~$60. Copy and paste the following address to see part numbers. I would call your local dealer and compare the cost of parts. They would also be able to tell you what part you need from your VIN. https://www.focusfanatics.com/threads/does-anyone-have-a-trunk-wiring-diagram.810763/ Like I said, I will check into diagrams and get back with you.

Well, I've found some info and I believe both black wires are grounds. Double check for voltage with a DMM or test light. These are solid black wires, correct?
Yes these are solid black wires.
I was wondering, if both wires are ground wires then shouldn't the hatch still open. If I am correct could it be fuse issue as well?
same problem here, the thing is that i have a hatchback that doesnt have a latch opener on the inside. Remote, inside trunk button and outside trunk button wont open the trunk lid. it use to work from time to time, but latley i did not manage to get it working. as i cannot open the trunk, still wondering how can i fix this thing. thanks for the help (SE 2015 hatchback)
Did you get any responses on your 'hatchback style" Focus hatch not opening? I have the same problem on mine. The wiring is routed differently than sedans and Ford did a nice job in that area, no broken wires found and my fuse is good.

OMG. Exactly as you said. Broken wire, splice, connect and good to go. Thank you
