Can you damage your transmission by removing the 4x4

I suspect that my car once had a 4x4 shift stick, but no longer does. Its a 1999 Durango and lately its been having a little problem going from first to second gear and then second to third. I love my car dearly and i dont want to run her dead. Can anyone help me!!!

The Durango was available both 2x2 and 4x4 in 1999. You can contact Chrysler on this side http://www.chrysler.com/wccsapp/universal/C/index.jsp give them the VIN of your Durango and ask them to provide vehicle build information. They will send you an email with al the info about how your truck was delivered when it was new.
