I have a 1997 Avenger 2.5 and I am looking for tires. Also I think the front axles are bad as I hear a click whenever I accelerate or go from drive to reverse. Need advice!!

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car has 131,000 miles but being an ex-mechanic I keep up with the maintenance and the
car runs fine. I believe the axles are bad, even though the boots are not ripped, and when I pull
on the axles they seem fine but whenever I accelerate or go from drive to reverse I hear a
clicking noise. I am not sure if it is the transmission as it is shifting hard when you first
accelerate or if it is the axles. I do not drive the car hard as it is my only vehicle.

I am also looking for a decent set of tires but do not know which ones to get that are not too
expensive. I was looking at a number of brands but the more I look the more confused I get.

Please let me know which brand of tires you recommend and if you feel the axles are the
problem with the car or if it is the transmission.

Thanks.

You might want to check the suspension. The lower ball joints in these cars have a recall on them and are defective. also the automatic transmission in these cars are horrible. the a604 is a picky beast. check your transmission fluid. for tires look into the Continental Xtrmeme Contact DWS. amazing tires, good price, and they are all season.
