My 86 Tercel has a fairly low idle speed. How do I adjust it up?

Asked by Ian Jul 07, 2013 at 06:59 AM about the 1986 Toyota Tercel 2 Dr STD Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It's occasionally alright, but sometimes it sputters, and almost dies.Where would I turn up
the idle speed at? I'm car illiterate, so please bear with me. I know where I can start my
car, and pull in the engine to rev the car, and I believe it's near there from what I've
gathered on other forums, but I've never found a definitive answer for my 86.

You probably have the 1.5Liter 3A engine. It has a carburetor, and the adjustment screw is attached to the throttle cable. If you pull on the throttle cable (or have someone else step on the gas pedal while you watch) you'll be able to see which screw will affect the throttle operation. Turn it clockwise to increase idle rpm. You have to take the air filter and housing off to get to it
