Oil weight and filter type.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am the 3rd owner of a 1989 Toyota pickup 4x4 with the
22re. It's in amazing shape and currently at 199307 miles
on it. Many original components, but new clutch and
transmission about 7k miles ago. A small amount of body
rust on the cab, but no frame or bed rust. I consider myself
very lucky to have it. I have done some research on engine
oil because it is directly related to the life of my vehicle. I
have read many discussions on many different forums and
people are running just about every type of oil under the
sun in a 22re with reportedly good results. That means the
22re can run on anything. One of the biggest known
destroyers of the 22re is the timing chain. The tensioner
runs on oil pressure and the longer it takes the more wear
on the guards which eventually fail and the chain begins
cutting into the water pump on startup eventually letting
coolant into the engine. So the question for me changes
from what oil can I use to be what oil should I use? More
specifically,  is it really a question of what oil, or is the
speed of pressurization more associated with the filters
anti drain back valve? Thanks in advance!

I would probably use 10W-40 in the engine. I have a 22R engine that ran over 300,000 and the timing chain rattled some but it ran great and did not use much oil. Replacing the timing chain is really not that hard.
