my 1989 ford probe won't shift back when you slow down and it stalls when you take off.

I'll assume it's an automatic . On take off you are probably in second but any car can start off in second -just give it a tad more gas. That doesn't solve the problem though. I don't know what tranny you have and neither do you. 1989 could be part electronic, If you want to find out about your tranny you are going to have to buy a manual for it or find info elsewhere...... Now you can always try draining out ALL the old fluid , etc. and see IF that helps ( most d.i.y. would be able to do that;but, you might seek out a mechanic for it. ) I would not flush it - drain it. Then;depending on the size of your wallet and how much you love a 1989 Ford Probe - you drive it as it is for as long as you can or fix it.
