The shifter on my 2003 Ford escape is stuck in park?

I found the button that releases it on top of the steering wheel. But, after
shutting the engine off and then restarting the car, the shifter is stuck again.

You will need to release the shifter like you did the first time every time you want to start the vehicles, that is only for emergencies and or until you get it fixed correctly. The shift interlock solenoid might be faulty. Have a mechanic diagnose the issue.
