I know I can buy the bearing without the hub, do I need to replace the hub also?

My dad has repaired cars all his life. He said I just need to get a mallet and pound the bearings out. The hub is a solid piece of metal and should be fine forever.

Yes you can, just pull, pry, beat the old one off, but the new bearing needs to be pressed on by the center race, if bearing is pressed on by the outer race, you will be what is called burneilling, creating flat spots on the roller bearings.

Once you have the hub, bearing assembly together it should slip back into place.
