I have an 86 volkswagon golf (not diesel) it was running fine for a year then it stopped we replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter but it still won't start although it wants to, what else can I do?

It's hard to answer whats the problem right off with very little info. Your best bet would be to do the basic troubleshoot first. Spark to plugs? Gas to cylinders? When you say it wants to start that to me sounds like the engine is cranking the cylinders fire up but the car won't idle.
