Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 86 golf diesel was running good and now will not start.  new battery turns over will not start.  checked timing belt by marking it and then try to start it. The mark wasn't where I could see it so belt is moving.  query starter  fuel filter, or fuel pump  Question is the fuel pump in the tank on this model? I know where fuel filter is and can change that.   Glow plugs were changed 1 year ago.   where do I start? Short of hauling it in and getting the garage to check it.   I can do the easier things

The diesel has a belt driven mechanical injection pump on the front of the engine. The fuel line from the filter goes to it. You should determine if the pump is drawing fuel through the line by looking for little bubbles through the clear portion while the car is being cranked. Also should check glow plug fuse along firewall under plastic cap.
