2014 CX-5 won't shut off
Having the same issue. Turn the car off--but it does not turn off. (not putting
your foot on the brake and turning it off does not work)
Please report this to Mazda so they will address the issue. Mazda told me
that they did not have any issues reported to them. (apparently other than
mine)

I have the same problem with my 2013 Mazda CX-5. If I disconnect the battery, the electronics will shut off, but if I try to restart the car, none of the electronics will turn off. I replaced the batteries in both the key fob's twice now, and I still get the same results, I also replaced the car battery before all of this thinking that was the problem.
The problem is with the gear shifter . There must be a sensor that tells it when its in park. If you move the shifter from left to right real fast a couple of times, it will shut off when you push the button.
My 2014 CX-5 is doing the same thing. First it was once in a while now it's constantly. I've had my battery run down so many times I bought a Mighty Max jumper for fear of being stranded. I live 50 miles from the nearest town. I have tried moving the shifter like Antonio mentioned above but sometimes nothing works. I just have to hope it will start next time I get in.
I have the exact same problem in our 2014 CX-5 Touring, is Mazda listening? This is a safety issue and should have recall status; thoughts anyone? Otherwise we love the vehicle but this problem needs resolution by Mazda
I have the same issue with my 2014 Mazda touring CX 5. What a pain!! I crank again, press the press the brake put it in drive shift back to park and if I'm lucky it shuts off. Today I've had to restart 9 times when it should have taken me 2. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL!!!!!
We are having the same issue with our 2014 CX 5. Took the family into NYC the other night and parked at an outdoor valet lot. When we returned to the lot after dinner, the battery was dead. We were one of the last cars in the lot, but thankfully I had jumper cables and the parking attendant was able to use another person's car to jump start us. My co-worker has the same exact car/model year, he is having the same issue. When he took it to Compass Mazda in Middletown, NY, they refused to cover the repairs (even though he had the extended warranty). This car is primarily driven by my 17 year old daughter, and I am really worried she is going to be stranded with a dead battery as a result of this manufacturing flaw. No doubt there should be a recall on this issue.
I thought I was the only one I have a 2014 Mazda Cx5 touring and it is a consistent problem I go to press button to turn off and car stays ON...drives me crazy

Wrote to Mazda again and linked to this site. Hopefully, they will consider addressing this issue. Two weeks ago, it took 31 tries to shut off my car!
GuruZ14KS Holy Crap. Last week it was at least 7 tries. I had to put seatbelt back on move car from park to drive and back again before finally car shut off. People look at me and think I don't know how to turn my car off..
My wife has the knack for turning it off (better than me) she jiggles the gear shifter and releases it so it kind of slams into position this seems to work. Is there a Mazda forum where we can all write in or some consumer advocate group? Had to leave ir on a couple of times mot only does it deplete your battery but you can’t lock or alarm your car
I’m having same problems. 2014 Mazda CX-5. I have to turn the engine back on, put in reverse, put it back in park and try again. I turn off Bluetooth, all audio, and make sure all the doors are closed. Sometimes it takes up to 8 or 9 tries before the “accessories” in the car shut down.
Teacher104 answered 7 years ago
It apparently is a sensor on the transmission. Took it to the dealer and had it replaced, $249. Seems to have fixed the issue.
Also have this issue with 2013 cx5 touring. Drove me crazy also... until now put in park and hit 3 bumps to the left. Works every time! NOT 2 bumps,... 3 is magic number. Good luck! Also reporting to Mazda Corp. Can everyone else do the same? Majority gets results!

Thanks for all the comments including the suggestion to move the gearshift back-and-forth a few times to make the car turn off completely. This was never an issue on my 2013 CX5 until I had my battery replaced by AAA 4 days ago. So what was affected by the swap of my battery? Will report to Mazda since I'm not alone with this issue.
I also have 2014 CX-5 and have been having this issue for a while now too. Definitely sounds like a recall is in order.
FLIPPER331 answered 6 years ago
I hAve a 2013 CX5 Grand Touring, have the same issue. After pressing start button on accessory press brake pedal and moving shift lever to drive then to park, then it will completely shut off.
FLIPPER331 answered 6 years ago
To Teacher 104, did they say what sensor it was?
Have the same issue in 2017 CX-5. The car won't shut off when pressing the button. Only way to shut it off is to switch gears and then get out of the car quickly. When I'm leaving the car in that state it starts beeping and keep running. Photo attached, showing the icon that appears.
I have the same problem with my 2012 cx5. luckily I found this forum. right now i am trying all te tips people provided. Now there is another problem, the car is shut off by itself after few seconds but i cant lock the car now.
I have the same problem. My 2013 Mazda CX 5 doesn't want to turn off about a quarter of the times I drive it. Issue just started a couple of weeks ago.
I've had this issue on my Cx-5 for about 2 years now. All you gotta do is push the Shifting gear slightly to the left while it's on park and press the Start button at the same time. When I take it to the dealership for maintenance they act like my Cx-5 is the only one with the issue.
Hi, I have the same problem with my 2014 CX5 Sport and now I realized it's a big issue that Mazda should do a recall on it. Please see the pic, this is where you can manage the problem. If you try by shifting left to right it won't turn off, put it on neutral and press the plastic cover under to makebit slide easily and it will turn off. hope it helps
Dealership said that my car did not recognize PARK. Cost $250 but mine is fixed.
None of those other "tricks" worked for me.
I finally took my car to the dealer this weekend to get the faulty switch replaced. I was on an extended warranty so it cost me the $100 deductible. The service department knew exactly what I was talking about. Sounds like they are seeing this issue a lot.
My 2017 CX5 is doing this also. I've only had it for 1.5 weeks and it has happened 3 times. Going to take it to the dealer and complain.
We have the same problem with our 2014 CX-5. Now, the start/stop button flashes an amber color while the car is on. Both fobs have good batteries. It’s one thing after another!
Regarding the issue of the car won't shut off completely , I spoke to corporate Mazda yesterday they told me they never heard of that problem, I am pretty much sure they lied because they don't want to do a recall on it. Everyone who has the same problem I advise you to call them at 1800-222- 5500 to report that matter. I think once they realize customers are calling about it they will do a recall. You will need the last 8 numbers of you VIN for verification of your car. Together let's make this recall happen because I am at Royal Palm Mazda dealership in 9305 Souther blvd Florida right now for that issue. $130 for diagnose and I will post how much that repair will cost me later. Please call CORPORATE AND COMPLAINT. thank you for reading my post
The car I am referring in my post is a 2014 Mazda CX5.
I went to the dealership they said it's the Shifter position switch that needed to be replaced. The cost is $ 410 + Tax total diagnose for $130 include. I did not have that kind of money, i will bring it back Tuesday to get it fix. Definitely Mazda should a a recall for that issue.
FLIPPER331 answered 6 years ago
Bernadel, Thank you for the ph#, I will definitely call them as I hope others would. Wow. $400 that seems like a crazy amount. There is an post on here that stated just over $200. It should be a safety recall for this.
Bernadel- you’re being way overcharged! I got that amount, even $600 from a couple of places and then read online that people got it fixed for $250. Finally found a mazda dealership that gave a me a real price and I got it fixed for $220 after tax. Took them an hour. They also said mazda won’t do a recall because it’s not “dangerous”. Is it incredibly inconvenient?? 100%. But it’s not dangerous enough to become a recall. Very much sucks. Find an honest mazda dealer!
I will check to see if I can find a better deal somewhere else. Thank you
FLIPPER331 answered 6 years ago
Bernadel, I called Mazda, filled a complaint, also did with transpertation dept. Mazda said they are looking to to see if it's covered on my extended warranty. I'm not holying my breath.
Great. Everybody should call them to file a complaint and see if they will do something . Hope it is covered under your warranty because that amount you can use it for something else.
FLIPPER331 answered 6 years ago
I agree the more people call, the sooner Mazda will do something. They also give you a ref# for calling in about the issue.
I am having this same issue with my 2017 CX 3. Everything that everyone describes above is what has been happening to me. I live in Australia and I am heading down to the dealership today to speak to them about this problem. Hopefully, They will get it sorted. I have printed off all these comments to show them. :-)
Call Mazda at 1800-222- 5500 to report the problem. Mine is fixed now for $ 298 after I spent $130 for diagnosis. It was the shifter position switch who went bad. Good luck
@Bernadel. Thank you for your quick response. I don't intend in paying anything for this to be fixed as I only bought it as a demo model less than 2 months ago. I would expect that it would be covered under warranty. :-) But you never know.
This is a common problem, the mazda part number to fix this is kdy0-46-040 it should cost around $200 for parts and labor.
Thank you Evan. I spoke with the dealership and they explained a couple of things to me which I don't agree with but they said that if it happens again, to ring them straight away and they will come and look at it. I have noticed though that if you have ANYTHING touching the automatic gear shift when it is in park, it won't shut off even if it says on the dash that it is in Park. Just something to remember as we have been aware of now.
This is where you all need to go to fill out a complaint with the NAtional Highway Safety Institute so that enough complaints are logged for a recall to be implemented (it takes 5min - all you need is your vin # from your registration): https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
Mazda issued a service bulletin for this in 2015 (for 2013 models) and updated in 2016 to include 2014 models: http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/yhst-24809172479195/kdy0-46-040.pdf. It should cost around $200 to fix ($60 part + and less than 1/2 hour labor)
Just got off the phone with Mazda (800-222-5500) They are aware of the problem and said if enough people complain, they will look at doing something about it. So......FLOOD THEM WITH PHONE CALLS AND EMAILS (mazdausa.com) Make them take notice of us!
#11091471- Just filed a complaint, it took just 5 minutes. Thanks for the information. When I asked my dealership here in Indianapolis they wanted $118 just to look into it. They did indicate that it was a very common problem! I’ll also call the Mazda number listed above!
I also have a Mazda CX-5 2014 - same problem. I have to turn my car on and off numerous times to get the navigation/radio screen to turn off. Mazda needs to address this because it is clearly a defect that should be recalled. I can't lock my doors until the car turns off ... really annoying!! Don't think I will be repurchasing Mazda.
I'm very upset ,I come late from work and my car doesn't turn off . I turn on again drove around the block 3 times and finally turn off. Happened some time before but now more often. Very stressful . Mazda needs to find out this issue
Having the same issue with a 2014 CX-5. Took it to the local Mazda today and the service manager denied ever hearing about the problem. I'm in Canada and when I showed him the litany of complaints on the web he said: "oh that's just in America". Will try to register a complaint with Mazda,
It's a defective shifter switch part KDYO-46-040 cost $55.80 plus tax. If you put part # in and go to Mazda site it shows the part and actually says its defective and the problem it's causing. My husband was able to replace it. On line it shows how to replace it. Also put in a complaint with Mazda corporate.
Had the same problem, extremely frustrating and can't afford $250 right now. One of the suggestions by Danny earlier worked for me. No need to cycle gears multiple times, the solution that worked for me is while it's in park, push the stick to the left. Hope it works for some other people.
PROBLEM SOLVED. CALL Corporate and make a formal complaint. Ask them to call the Dealership to make an appt for you. Get the case number and go for your appt. From there call corporate again to remind them about your issue and ask them who will pay for the service. Ive started with a U$425 bill and end up with only U$70 . I paid the part only they paid for the service. Tell them that you saw on Goggle a lot of people complaining about the same issue. In case they say they won't pay anything, tell them that will be a class action against them. That worked for me. Good Luck

I've got a 2014 Mazda 6, I've noticed it starts happening when the weather warms up. I've also found that if you jiggle the shifter in park A LOT before shutting off the engine I have a better chance of it turning off. I don't feel like paying over $200 to fix this thing, so I found the part online for $50 and going to try and fix myself. I'll post the video when I can (I haven't found another video yet, please post if you've seen one.)

thanks everyone for posting here - I wish I would have don't a google search on this topic a long time ago. Have been dealing with this issue for a year now... Two Mazda dealerships told me it was bad batteries in my fob. Called Mazda Corporate to file a complaint. Took it to a local Mazda Dealership Friday with a stack of these notes. they replaced the switch (KDYO-46-040) at no cost. Glad its fixed but not sure it the year of frustration was worth it. Will think twice before buying another Mazda.
FLIPPER331 answered 6 years ago
I have contacted Mazda several times, even though I have an extended warranty, I was told its not covered. I just ordered the part from ebay, It took me 15 mins to replace the switch. Ops check good
SAME PROBLEM with my Mazda6 2014. It was happening randomly the last couple of years and I assumed I must have double clicked the off button. But starting this year I had several instances of it taking 10 tries to turn off. Monday was the worst - I could NOT turn off the car. I had to take a wrench to disconnect the battery. Now it is going to cost me $500 to fix. I wish I had reported it last year so it was covered under warranty. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL!
TOPmusicman8 answered 6 years ago
Same thing has been happening to me!! It's getting worse! I just called Mazda and got the typical "oh, we dont see a recall for this... but I will log this info." I just ordered the part on ebay and I'm gonna try it myself. Is this easy to fix?
Same thing. Mazda CX5 touring. Won't shut off. Thanks for all the posts. Seems that this isn't an isolated problem. Calling Mazda just now: 800.222.5500.
scotta0471 answered 6 years ago
For those with this issue, and who aren't ready to have it fixed, try this: when you stop move the shifter to Park fairly firmly, wait ten seconds or so, then hit the Power button. I've been having some good luck with it.
Experiencing the same problem with my 2014 cx-5. Here's where you can contact for a recall: Safercar.gov You can also report a vehicle safety issue to NHTSA online at our vehicle safety Web site: www.safercar.gov. Select “File a Complaint” within the Defects and Recalls section of the home page. The information you submit via the Web site is recorded in VOQ format, entered into our consumer complaint database, and provided to our technical staff for evaluation. When you fill out a VOQ online, you will be given the option of checking a box to authorize or not authorize the release of your personal identifiers to the manufacturer of the alleged defective product you own. Again, while you are not required to provide such authorization, doing so can sometimes help facilitate the recall process. U.S. Mail To report a safety complaint to NHTSA by mail, send your letter to: U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Office of Defects Investigation (NVS-210) 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE Washington, DC 20590
I just called Mazda USA- they said part is probably just worn out and since I’m past the warranty on my 2014 Mazda CX-5 it isn’t covered and there isn’t a recall at this time. They suggested I call my Mazda dealer and get it fixed- so in other words- I got no where with them!!
Jamienycole answered 6 years ago
I have the exact same issue with my 2014 Mazda CX-5. I have called Mazda and reported this issue. I just got some other recalls fixed this morning and a quote on how much it will be to fix this issue with it not cutting off. It’s going to be about $375. It has gotten so bad, that I keep a pair of pliers in my car to disconnect the battery when it does this. I emailed Mazda and sent them the link to this post, and demanded a recall. I will not be paying almost $400 to fix an issue with my car that is not my fault, and that other mazda owners are having! It’s not right!
So, I'm not sure how I feel about Mazda. I think generally I would not recommend the brand. The quality seems to be an issue and Mazda USA and Dealers do not seem to get what customer service is. I've owned many different Brands and my experience with Mazda service (not just this time) has left me more frustrated than any other brand I've ever purchased. Prior to Mazda my experience has been that Customer Service is more important than a few bucks. I've always been offered some kind of I'm sorry, let me do something for you offer. Some more reasonable than others, but mostly satisfactory offers and seemingly sincere. Now, to be clear after several calls and back and fourths between my dealer and Mazda USA, I am getting comped for this repair. But, man o man was it a battle, and had I not called Mazda USA thanks to the advice here, the dealer was more than happy to just charge me $337. Now, on to second apparently common defect on CX-5's. The driver's seat mechanism is crap and also wears out and or breaks. The seat rocks forward/backward. It is particularly annoying in traffic. A quick google search turned up nearly as many complaints about the seat as the shifter. I'm sure many of you might be having the same problem. Mazda USA declined to offer anything to help with the cost of this repair. OH, the cost nearly $1,000!!!! Prior to this car I owned a Kia Sorrento and prior to that all Fords. My wife has purchased Nissan, Hyundai, and Subaru. None have been perfect, but all those brands have seemed respectful and capable of recognizing when things are just unfair and distasteful and offered some kind of accommodations. Not my dealer nor Mazda USA. It's too bad I genuinely like the vehicle and would have included Mazda in the mix when the time comes for a new car but based upon this experience and what I'm reading here and on other sites, not any more.
yet another Mazda 2014 CX-5 that will not turn off. I called the Mazda number above. They claimed they don't know about it. I gave the Mazda customer service the Mazda internal service memo also mentioned above for her reference. She said that I have to take it to the nearest dealer for diagnosis (150 miles away), but she couldn't tell me if it would be covered. So instead of getting it fixed locally, I have to take the chance of driving it 150 miles and ending up with large dealer service bill. Things happen but corporate cover ups are not excusable. This will likely be my last Mazda.
Note added to ShifterGate post above, I thought I should leave proof her for Mazda that I indeed did purchase this 2014 CX-5 new from them... last seven of VIN 0305002. 85,000 miles. Will post out come soon.
Oh lord help me!! It took me about 20 times to try to shit Mazda CX-5 2013. I left it for about 4 hours but have had a dead car battery. I don’t have a way to jump my car without bothering someone to stop by. I asked Siri after trying to read the manual to try to find out why my car won’t shut off. Soooo after numerous starts and stops. A drive around the block. I read to move shifter left to right fast and FINALLY the car shut off. I love my Mazda very much!! This is a bummer. Will speak to the dealership and will order part myself and see if I can replace.
scotta0471 answered 6 years ago
TIP: I've had the same issue with my car (2014 Mazda 6), but I've found a work-around that has helped quite a bit. When putting the car in Park, I do so firmly, then wait 10 seconds. When I hit the power button the car turns fully off at least 90% of the time. If it doesn't, I do not restart the car...but keep my foot off the brake, wiggle the shifter back and forth firmly a few times, then hit the power button twice. Hope this helps.
I called the 800 number and got nowhere. None of the tips and tricks to get the car to fully shut off worked for me so I need to get this fixed today, outside warranty. I can't even order the part and replace it myself. Asked "why is there no recall on this?" and the answer was "Well, recalls are the government. They decide what's a recall." So basically they don't care about the low quality of their products, they won't do anything unless they are forced to.
GuruWSWHL thanks for the info on the part number. I bought it yesterday and with the service bulletin I downloaded online I fixed the problem in 30 minutes.
My brother in law ordered the part for me and my brother fixed it. It took about an hour- only because of trying to figure out how to take the console apart. Once the console was off- it took him only a couple minutes to replace the part! Total cost- $65- so thankful for for family,!!
Same happening to me! I put in park & car is not recognizing sensor. Dropped it off at John Hine Mazda in San Diego, they Wernt sure about part so I gave them the # KDY0-46-040 and once they looked it up YUP that’s the sensor & they have 2 in stock! He also mentioned it’s a very common issue lately!
I so glad I found this forum. I am so frustrated with my Mazda CX-5 2013. Going to call to file complaint. Probably won’t help me because I can’t wait for a recall but maybe will help the next person. Thanks everyone e for the tips!
Just submitted the following to Mazda on their "Contact Us" portion of their webpage: I contacted Mazda approximately 2 months ago regarding a problem with my car not shutting off completely after pushing the button. I was advised that Mazda was aware of the problem with the sensor #KDY0-46-040, but was not issuing a recall at that time. The dealership wants over $100 just to diagnose a problem that Mazda is already aware of and another $200+ to replace the part. Check https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/Discussion- t49115_ds799849?sntEmlId=1964374109#msg850430, which shows numerous people are having the same problem and Mazda has assisted some of them in having this part replaced at no cost. Why not assist all of us and show that you care about the people who drive your cars? This could be dangerous, such as a few people who have said they came back to their vehicle to find a dead battery late at night with no one around. I bought my vehicle from Russ Darrow Mazda in Greenfield, WI. This is the first foreign car I have ever owned and up until this problem, I have had nothing but good things to say about it. I feel it is negligent on Mazda's part not to issue a recall for Part #KDY0-46-040 before there is a class action suit against Mazda or worse if someone is injured due to this malfunction of a Mazda part.
I'm having the same problem with my Mazda cx5. The darn thing won't shut off, only getting worse. Thanks for all the posts, I thought maybe it was just me.
haha I am SO relieved to read these posts. I have a 2014 CX5 and have been dealing with this problem for months. The car just won't shut off and I am at my wits end! I end up playing with it, popping it out of Park and into park, reverse, forward, back in park - for like 10 minutes just to get the thing to turn off. So frustrating Mazda isn't accepting responsibility for what is clearly a defect. I have never had this issue with any other vehicle.
I have a 2013 cx5 and it’s been doing that same lately. This has to be a recall.
I have exactly the same issue. I have a Mazda Cx5 2013. :(
2013 CX-5 started having the same issue this year. Discovered earlier this year when my teen son drove the car, didn't know it didn't shut down because he didn't have the radio on, and woke up the next morning to a dead battery. Happening every time I drive the car now. I have been able to get it shut down by slamming it forcibly into park a couple times, but that is unacceptable for the long run. This is a defect in manufacture when this many people are experiencing the same issue. Shame on Mazda for not addressing it. Tires and wiper blades are normal wear and tear. Transmission shut off sensors are not.
2014 6isport started doing it. I have a habit of parking aligning in reverse than power off. That's what does it. I'll have to pull forward a hair and park it than power off and it works. Happening more consistently though since I got the car in Nov 17 w/31k
My 2013 CX-5 started this issue yesterday. It didn't shut off completely when I parked last night and the battery was dead when I woke up this morning. I discovered that when I parked downhill, it did not power off but when parked uphill, it did turned off properly. I will call Mazda Canada to report this issue. Hopefully they will shoulder the repair cost. If not, I will buy the part online and replace it myself.
i have the same problem with my 2014 CX-5, i'm from canada, tried the solutions people provided on this forum, it works sometimes but only after few attepmts, this is ridiculous and mazda should do a recall!!!
I just registered my husband's and my Mazda vehicles with safecar.gov on page two as a complaint. If they get enough of these maybe they will do a recall and it will not cost us anything to fix our cars as this is clearly a malfunction of a lot of Mazda's. Flood that site!
I ended up fixing this issue on mine by replacing the switch (part# KDY0-046-040). Takes about 30min from start to finish. If anyone in the Chicago area wants theirs done, post on here and I’ll get in touch with you. Dealer wanted to charge me a ridiculous amount. -Johnny
Just filled a complaint with Mazda, they new about this issue a long time. TBH if they dont offer to correct it i will do it myself and then consider seeking the money back in small claims court.
I bought my 2014 mazda cx-5 used from a Ford dealership. My car does the same thing, it doesn't do it everytime but it does it pretty often. I mentioned this to the dealership and they said I would have to go to an actual mazda dealer. Dropped it off at one yesterday under the impression everything was fine and it would only cost the $100 deductible. Only to call today(they never called like they said they would) and here that part actually isn't covered and it would cost around $500. I called the 800 number and got a case number and was told I should get a call by Tuesday at the latest. I was also told by the dealership that there is an open recall on my vehicle for the lift gate, I believe he said the shocks can rust and the gate could fall on you. Other mazda owners should look into this, I was unaware of this issue until I heard it today
Shut off problem occurred on my 2018 cx3, and 2018 cx5 that i traded the cx3 in for. 2 different mazda dealerships (SLC, UT, SF, CA) said they never heard of the problem. How is that possible in 2 major cities? SF dealer said keys needed reprogramming, next day i couldn't unlock my car. Now he said i need new key fobs, appt tomorrow. I'm hoping after they can't fix it (i won't show this site) i can do lemon law and get out of lease. Both these Mazdas have no acceleration. It's dangerous. F mazda. Never again
I finally took my Mazda to a friend locally here in NC. Within minutes problem solved. Come to fin out it is a sensor in the shift gear. The vehicle when put in park by shifter is in park. The sensor does not recognize this once I would hit button to turn off so that is why it would stay in "on " position. Happy to stay all fixed thanks to a local man who understood exactly what I was talking about and that the car did this to him.
Here is the answer I got when I inquired about it. Total BS. Thank you for contacting the Mazda Customer Experience Center. I am sorry to hear about the concern you are experiencing with your vehicle. A recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle, equipment, car seat or tire creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards. Part failures can happen on a vehicle at any time, so at this time a part failure without an issued recall would be seen as being inside or outside of warranty; however, we have documented your concern with the vehicle and if a recall were issued in the future, and you paid for the repair, you can apply for reimbursement. We would notify you if there was a recall by first class mail. Do you have the approximate mileage of the vehicle also, so I may document this as well? Thank you again and if you have any questions or responses, you may reach me by replying directly to this e-mail.
One last reply when I told them they shouldn't wait for a recall l and do the right thing: (also gave him this link) "I can understand your concern with what could potentially happen, but there are many concerns which can cause a safety circumstance if the part failed, and I answered your question as you posed it; however, your warranty is what covers product defect, and that is now expired. You have stated your search online is similar to what other people are experiencing, but have you brought your vehicle to the dealership for diagnosis to confirm? I certainly want your safety at all times, but it is your responsibility as the owner to ensure you bring your vehicle at any notice of a concern, for electronic or mechanical parts can fail at any moment. Since you are the original owner with this concern, if you bring the vehicle to an authorized Mazda dealership for service to have the concern diagnosed, I would be happy to review the situation, but there is no promise of assistance as the vehicle is outside of warranty. Please let me know if you set up an appointment with a Mazda dealership, which one and at what time, I will contact the dealership after they have the chance to inspect it." You know they aren't going to help me, and I'll be out nearly $400 by the time they " diagnosis" and fix the damn thing. This blows!

It’s your parking switch. It’s located under the gear shifter. Part is $80 from a Mazda dealer + $129 for an hour of work. Took me roughly 50 minutes (followed a YouTube video).
I have a 2012 CX-9 and it won't shut off. Thanks for all the posts. I called the local dealer and to walk in the door for a diagnostic test would be $100.00. I will call the 1-800-222-5500 also to report the problem with the shifter in park and car not shutting off.

I'll never purchase another Mazda since the company could not own up and issue a recall.
Mine wouldn't shut off anymore, no matter what I did. So I took it to mazda and he told me it was a 3 week wait. Three weeks of unplugging/replugging the battery every time I use my car? Hell no! It's the shifter mechanism. The rubber wears out on a little pin and doesn't get pushed in enough. So I took off the rubber piece and replaced it with a blob of epoxy. Works like a charm. Cost: $0 The center console is just clips, so it's easy to get to.
Wayne’s answer is right on! The problem is a tiny rubber part that wears out. The new part from Mazda comes with a plastic nub instead, so it appears they know there’s an issue with the old ones. Mazda could fix this for ten cents, plus five minutes of labor if they were ethical. I wasn’t brave enough to do the epoxy trick, so I called the dealer. Two week wait- no thanks. Instead I ordered part number KDY0- 46-040 ($60 with fast delivery), then fixed it myself. There are multiple videos of this fix on YouTube that take three minutes to watch. I fixed mine in 20 minutes with one YouTube video, one standard and one philips screwdriver. That’s it! I could do it again in five minutes (I tried it). If you can change batteries in most kids toys, you’ve got the skills to do this. It’s not worth the time or money to drive to the dealer.

I installed mine last night. Picked up part off Ebay for $54. Took about 45 minutes. Only issue with install is that when I clip in left side of console cover, the thin plastic dust cover under shift gate gets bound up when shifter pushed forward. Not sure what I did there, but better than spending $450 that I was quoted from the dealer.
Ordered KDY0 part today. going to follow the YouTube video and fix it myself. I called 3 times and complained to Mazda. Going to put in a claim with NHTSA.
I had this issue with my 2012 model Mazda CX-5 and resolved the issue now. Just restart the Car again in parking mode and give a gentle push on the gear lever to left and switch off the engine.
Having the same issue with my Mazda CX-5 2014 happens all the time now ughhh so annoying will definitely be calling to make a complaint.
I must have read 50 complaints on this site about the same problem. My car is a 2014 CX-5 and I've been battling the car not shutting off now for many months. Today was a particularly bad day when I had to leave the car "on"2x in auxillary mode to run into a store- just praying my battery would not be drained. Atter reading these posts and hearing what problems the Customer Service Dept. of Mazda is, I no longer respect the company and will not be purchasing another Mazda. Going to try to fix it myself because I feel that the company is just trying to make money off of their "customer's" misfortunes.
Have a 2014 CX-5 Grand Touring. Same issue as everyone else here it seems. So glad for all of the info everyone has provided! I'll be contacting Mazda Corporate after I get home from the dealership today. The dealership is replacing the switch and also charging me for the mandatory diagnostic test, which is a money maker in my opinion, since we already know the issue. All in, I'm paying $288 today. Seems like the price is all over the place for customers.
And here I thought it was just me....Have 2014 CX-5 Grand Touring and apparently just started experiencing this same issue about a month ago. Thank you for all the insight. I'll be calling Mazda today.

I see the same problem with my 2014 CX-5 touring. Yesterday it took me about 12 attempts to turn off the car. Spoke to Mazda today and they asked me to go to dealership to get it diagnosed and fixed. They were not aware of any such issue with the car. I see many people have attempted the fix on their own. Can someone provide the youtube link?
I’m having the same issue. 2014 CX-5. Thank you everyone for the awesome advice. Boo Mazda for being so cheap!
Excellent video detailing replacing the switch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WeiN0pi_5Q
I'm wondering, if anyone has called Mazda and if they said it's a recall? I just called and rep said it's just a Service Bulletin and that she would add a note for their records. If it happens to become a recall, she said that after repair, Mazda would reimburse. Thanks, John
I have a Mazda CX-5 2013 and I am having the same problem that my car does not switch off. It almost drive me crazy when I encounter this website and could turn off my car. I love my car but quite disappointing that I have not received a re-call for this kind of issue when a lot of people have the same problem.
I bought the part, KDY0- 46-040 from Amazon $50 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0763ZQRB8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00 ?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and took it to the dealer and they replaced it for $195 (cost of labor) Costco had 15% coupon for the dealer so saved a little. Now accessories turn off every time I turn of the engine.
Same problem with my 2014 CX-5, I am so glad I found this page! Thanks for everyone posting. I just ordered it off of Amazon and will try and fix myself.
I am having this exact same issue with my 2014 Mazda CX-5. It’s driving me crazy! I have to jiggle the gear shift like crazy after I put it in park. Sometimes it works the first time, other times I have to do it 5 or 6 times because the car battery still stays on. Can’t believe this is a common issue!
Same here..2014 CX-5. Last winter it was bad but I could fix it by being a little more aggressive when putting it into park. Warm weather came and it stopped happening so I forgot about it. Well, now that it's cold again it's happening. Guess I'd better order the part before it gets bone-chilling cold here.

2013 cx5 here too in New Zealand. Having exactly the same issue- thought it was maybe related to dodgy wiring of aftermarket radio. I don’t seem to have the issue when I make sure the radio is turned off as much as when it is left on. Pain in the butt when the battery runs flat so often!
Hi I'm from Sydney Australia. I have a 2013 CX5 Maxx Sport which does the same thing, won't turn off the Entertainment Unit wen you turn off the engine. I have been quoted "About $800 to repair..." by my local dealer. I have since found out that it is more than likely this Switch. CX-5 KE Auto Trans Shifter Not-Park switch Part KDY146040 Part Only price here in Oz is about $150. There are some tutorials on YouTube that show you how to change the switch. It's a bit fiddly, but should take less than an hour to change.....
I have a Mazda CX-5 2012 model and I’ve been having this issue for a while now. I have found that starting again and shifting gear then back to park “sometimes” works. And the stop start only ever worked when it wanted to. The light flashes amber and the red triangle light comes on, that’s when the istop, stops working. Seriously do Not like this car.. #wannatrade? Lol
I’m in Brisbane Australia. Seems it’s a problem that Mazda are Clearly aware of as its in all models from 2012 - 2014 it seems.
Hi. I have a 2014 Mazda 6 GT and have been having the same problem and it seems to be getting worse. I’ve noticed that it is worse in the colder months. None of the “tricks” have worked for me. Thanks for all the info and posts. Will be calling in a complaint.
Hi, I’ve had the issue with my 2014 CX-5 for three years. Took it to the dealer and they wanted $550 to replace entire gear shift box. No thanks. I find that if I pull the gear knob to the left when turning off the car it shuts off completely. Thanks to fellow owners who figured out the switch part and have posted YouTube videos, I’m fixing it myself this weekend. I’ll never buy another Mazda.

Hey all, so I have the same issue on my 2013 mazda cx 5. If you turn your vehicle off and the radio stays on, turn your vehicle back on, put the car in reverse, the back to park and then shut the vehicle off, that works on my vehicle.
2014 Mazda CX5. As of my chat with Mazda today there is still no recall for this issue. They said they are not in charge of issuing the recalls, it is NHTSA and it is up to the repairing dealer to report it. They report there are "no trends". They also said they only consider reports from certified Mazda dealers, so if you take it to your regular mechanic they do not consider that as an official report.
Oddly enough, I have been having the same issue in NY. Took the car in to local Mazda in Poughkeepsie( never again) - they said its was a brake switch at a cost of $360 on top of the $140 for the diagnostic test which " confirmed" bad switch. Oh- should mention 1 headlight was out- tried to say I needed over $200 of lights replaced plus $150 in labor. Took my Mazda back as they tried to rook me with not honoring the extended warranty ( new management) by 3 days due to the CoVid Closures. Additionally- they refused to give me the complete diagnostic report that I paid for. I share this as lesson learned...
This issue stems from a cheap plastic part under the shifter that has been reported many times on many blogs, etc. The engine will power down but not the accessories. Must turn vehicle back on, wiggle shifter back & forth to get the worn plastic part to engage so vehicle will recognize that it's in park before vehicle will power down. This may take anywhere from 1 to 10 times depending on how worn the part becomes. Mazda not listening to this repetitive complaint that has been reported for years. My 2014 CX-5 began having this problem around 60K miles. Will cost around $300 to repair. This problem is so common, there are instructions online for DIYers to fix themselves. Somewhat complicated for even a good mechanic.
A temporary fix is to disconnect battery for a couple minutes reconnect everything off so u can restart or lock up till it can be fixed
This is a fairly easy fix you can do yourself with tools you have on hand, about 40 minutes, and 50.00. I found a service bulletin for this exact problem with my 2014 Mazda I purchased used started giving me the “Turn power off” message even though the car was in park. It continued to get progressively worse over time and the only way to get it to turn off was to slam the shifter into park after going back and forth multiple times between reverse and park. There was a little plastic switch unit in the shifter console that needed replaced. It wears so it will not engage and recognize that you are in park. Mazda acted like they had never heard of this issue, and would have to charge a diagnostic fee to determine what the cause was, and could not quote me a repair cost after the Diagnostic fee. There are videos on YouTube showing you how to do this fix. https://youtu.be/Vyq-Pp-iG6U Also, technical service bulletin. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2015/SB-10105637-2532.pdf I did this fix over a year ago and it worked like a charm, not a single problem until yesterday. Started up again. Made me wonder about the integrity of the part. My replacement part may have been the original faulty model and not the improved version. Will try again myself with upgraded part if I can source.
Order the part on Amazon and have someone put it in for you... I think total it cost me about $75 and it completely fixes the problem. I have no problems with my 2014 CX-5 since.
I had the same problem with my Mazda-cx5 2013. Eventually I'll have to replace the KDY146040, but in the meantime, I found a quick fix for that. When you are turning the engine off, put the gear shifter in park (obviously) then push it to the left gently with your right hand and hold it there, while pressing the start/stop button with your left hand. Everything should turn off then :) Good luck! Fritz
Thanks everyone for all the info. I have 2014 Mazda CX-5. Today was the second I experienced the issue of the electronics not shutting off.
Had the same problem with my 2014 Mazda CX/5. The quick fix which is mentioned above works great. “When you are turning the engine off, put the gear shifter in park (obviously) then push it to the left gently with your right hand and hold it there, while pressing the start/stop button with your left hand. Everything should turn off then :)”. Also, for permanent fix, just pick up the part from Mazda dealer & ask any local auto repair shop to replace it, it only takes half hour labor. So it shouldn’t cost more then $140. Or you can watch YouTube videos & install it yourself, seems doable & doesn’t require any speciality tools or skills.
Will never get Mazda again for my next car. I have the same problem!
I think this must be the way this car tells you to change the batteries in your fob. Changed the batteries in both fobs twice now and cleared the problem up. I have a 2014 Mazda Cx-5. I did have to change the batteries twice in one fob one time. Suspected a bad new battery. Problem cleared up.

I wish I had searched for this problem a year ago when problems with my 2013 CX 5 were sporadic. Now it happens frequently. I have an appointment with Mazda dealer tomorrow to get fixed. The repair guy knew exactly what was happening! I wonder why Mazda is doing nothing about recall. It is obvious from what I have read here that it is a problem that many have and has been going on for a while!
Guru95YD6H answered 3 years ago
I read through all of these posts; what a poor decision my Mazda to neglect their customers. Clearly, this is a known problem that stems from their poor quality in material. Do the recall, take care of your customers. Winter here in MN, my Mazda takes about 2 minutes to start up with the shaking park method. I wonder how long until it damages itself from this movement. Very disappointing.
To shut down the accessories if not powered off when the engine powers down, restart and hold shifter to the left. While holding the shifter use your other hand and power off the engine. This has worked every time I held shifter to the left. Where's Mazda? Should have been a recall years ago. Won't purchase another because of their cheap rubber part that disintegrates under constant use. The replacement part is hard plastic that won't wear.
Guru95YD6H answered 3 years ago
Although that is useful, the bigger issue is turning the vehicle on. The accessories turn on, not the engine. Much thanks.

I have a 2012 CX5 - this is the only problem I've had with the car. It took me a drive around the block tonight to get this car turned off. My neighbors think I'm crazy! I've called the dealership in the past and the service center made it sound like I was crazy. Going to try ordering the part and having someone put it in for me. Due to their refusal to address this, I've decided to go elsewhere to purchase my next vehicle. Thanks everyone.

2013 Mazda CX-5 won't shut off, either. Realized it when I was trying to jump the battery. AGAIN. Randomly works; can find no pattern. Wonder if these were all made in the same location. Clearly this is an issue, and for Mazda to claim otherwise brings shame to their brand.
Guru9BMHXD answered 3 years ago
Have 2013 CX-5, same problem. Happens intermittently and then continually recently. Page 7-33 in operator's manually says "if the driver's door is opened while the ignition is switched to ACC (cruise control--don't know why they have to use these silly acronyms), a continuous beep sound will be heard and the KEY warning light flashes to notify the driver that the ignition has not been switched off (STOP). Left in this condition, the keyless entry system will not operate, the car cannot be locked and the battery power will be depleted." So my husband just restarted the car, turned off the cruise control, and pressed stop. Problem solved, at least temporarily. Don't know why that would do it, since I always have cruise control set. We'll see if I have more problems.
Guru9CV6NR answered 3 years ago
Same thing here. I can't believe that it happens 1/2 the time I try to turn off the car. I have to rock the shifter back and forth then hit the start 2 more times to get it to turn off, and that doesn't work all the time. This absolutely should be a recall.
Nightwing1717 answered 3 years ago
I had the same issue. Car would not shut off. Apparently it was a switch in the shifter. I found someone who was able to fix it (parts and labor 200$) located in the new york area. If you are looking for help, send me an email turkjd17@gmail.com. I'll introduce you.
This applies to CX-5 and Mazda 6. This is a flaw in the design of the switch. They have used soft rubber. Please read entire previous posts as I am referring to some info. First, you don't want to have the dealer charging you to diagnose the problem as the diagnostic cost more than the fix. If the display mention both at the same time that the car is in Park with letter P and asking you to shift lever in park to shut down, it is definitively the switch referred in service bulletin part # KDY0- 46-040. Mazda does know about this as they are selling many replacement switches. Before going to the dealer, print the referred bulletin. It clearly mentions that the time to change is .4 hours (30 minutes) and it does as I have timed the mechanic that did mine. In canada, the switch is 75$ CND at the dealer and 50$ for 1/2 hour in the shop plus tax. total cost 143$ for peace of mind and no bother to spend 2 hours trying to fix it myself. So in conclusion, go to the dealer and do not ask what is wrong with the car. Tell them to change the switch and to quote as per Mazda bulletin for the time to do the work. I must add that my Mazda 6 2014 is one of the best car for the money. I never had a single issue after 80000 Kms other than minimal maintenance that the car schedule ask for. Therefore, I don't mind the 150$ extra. Unfortunately, if that part was properly designed at the firs place, that car would have been beating a record in term of friability. 5/5 reliability and drive better than other luxurious car well above twice the cost with less options.
Mine does the same thing. Odd how erratic it is. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Temporary fix> after you turn it off and putting it into park 1. Wiggle shifting lever left and right a few times 2. Push power button 2x's.
same problem here, mine is a CX5 2014, and this problem just started about 3 months ago and its getting worst. I'm going to contact Mazda and see what they are doing about it.
Hello Everyone, Please call the NTSB/NHTSA (Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236), or fill out their safety complaint form online. If we get enough people filing a complaint it may force a recall. Here is the link: https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#vehicle
I have the same problem with my CX5 2013. I am in Australia and took the car to my local Mazda dealer and was quoted $1602.24 to fix the car. Outrageous. Why is Australia costing so much more?
Mine is the same!!! I am so frustrated and just want to cry. I hope the gear switch can fix it, I'll let my shop know.
So have I, mine is 2012 model and Japanese built one. The amber light of push start/stop button is still on at ACC mode even the engine has stopped and put the Gear-Selector-Lever at "P" as well. I've got the same experience such problem on my previous vehicle Land-cruiser PARADO. Not because of properly settle that G.S.L at "P" position, the ACC is still on and the key couldn"t be taken off then I left it behind. So the result is the battery had run out on the next morning. Latter on I've realized accidentally after forcing up that handle to "P" position, then found the key was able to be taken out and properly off. So this time I do the same way, the problem has been fixed it. And another way is... after engine stop, just hand brake on and while continue depressing and hold the brake paddle then switch to off. Before calling any service, suit to try it? hmm...
Not saying this is a permanent solution- but it is a cheap one.My car has the same frustrating problem.I've found that if I just move it up or back 1 or 2 meters it then shuts off properly if gear shift is firmly thrown into Park.
Ok have experiencing the not shut off thing. One day my car restarted. Am reporting to transport Canada

My 2013 Mazda Cx-5 has been doing this intermittently for about 3 years. Recently, it is getting worse. It is ridiculous that Mazda knows that they put a defective part in these cars and will not do a recall to fix the problem! I did love my Mazda, but will never buy another one. Someone should start a class action suit against them for this!

Our 2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Sports is one of the best vehicles we have ever owned. The only issue in our ten years of ownership since it was new, is the issue which hundreds of people have described here, where the gear lever (in 'park') doesn't turn off the electrics. All the jiggling we did with the gear stick, made no permanent improvement to the problem. The only 'properly-fixed' solution we have found here in Australia, is to buy a new 'switch unit' from Mazda (part number KDY1-46-040) and have it fitted by a reliable mechanic. The significant wear on the black plastic plunger, which is designed to shut off the car's electrics in 'park', is clearly obvious in the attached picture. The new switch unit works really well. Good luck with yours.
I think I know why this is happening & how to temporarily fix the issue & prevent it from getting worse. I have a 2014 CX5 & this issue started recently. After watching a guy’s video in the link below & realizing the shift switch (P)ark tab is going bad, I think I know why this might be happening. When I shift into P, I feel a lot of force/pressure in the gear shifter. I also have the car set to “lock doors when I shift out of P & unlock doors in P.” I believe when this setting is on, it wears down the shift switch P tab, which is why the car won’t turn off (see video to understand). I succeeded in jiggling the gear shifter as a temporary fix, but then it stopped working. So, I unlocked the doors before putting it into P & noticed a lot less force/pressure as I shifted to P, & it worked! Car turned off! Since then, I have the car set to “lock doors when driving” & unlock manually, & I’ve had ZERO issues turning my car off!! Just try it & see if it works. Watch this guy’s video on YouTube. He shows why this is happening & how to fix the issue for around $30 permanently!! His method works for the 2014 CX5 & 6, but it should work for a different year/model by following his instructions & confirming the part # with your dealership. https://youtu.be/6D0WxWwFKtA

Hey, y'all. Before buying or replacing parts, ask yourself if the keys are in the cupholder! According to the 2014 CX-5 Smart Start Guide: "CAUTION: RED Key Indicator Light may illuminate if either advance key or keyless entry key is placed in the cup holder. The key can sometimes not be detected in the cup holder." You can see it on the first page of the guide here: https://www.mazdausa.com/siteassets/pdf/owners-optimized/2014/cx5/2014-cx-5-smart- start-guide.pdf
