When you put the 4 wheel drive in neutral, and the transmission in any gear, it won't do anything. What might the problem be?

1984 4 wheel drive, 5 speed, Ford Ranger.  Has been sitting for at least a
year.

The transfer case needs to be in 2-wheel high. With the transfer case in neutral, the transmission will not engage.
