Ford Escape 2014 SE 4WD - front or rear wheel drive normally

4WD suppose to come on automatically when needed, is there a icon to let you know when it is engage?  Is this normally a front or rear wheel drive vehicle? I would like to know cause when going down hill and applying the brake, the transmission will down shift. This could be a problem on snowy roads in the winter if front wheel drive.

Thanks Tom, that is good information to know since this vehicle will auto-down shift when you are applying the brakes down hill. That could be a problem since I drive hilly back roads and our winters can get bad.
