Auto 4WD in my Chevy Silverado

When I put the truck into 4WD Auto, I can feel power being distributed to the
front wheels immediately.  Is this supposed to happen?  I thought only when the
tires slip will the computer engage the front wheels.

that's the way it should be on the new trucks, only from dead stop, but while driving it dis-engages the front.
