gas cap light will not go off, how do i reset it?

They say it will go off with time, but I don't know. Otherwise you need to go somewhere who has a code analyzer (scanner) to have it reset.

Sometimes you can switch the ignition on(do not start), press the gas pedal to the floor 3 times and switch it off. All this within 5 seconds. Crank it and see if it works, if not take it the dealer and clear the codes. Someone may have changed the cap or it is not on right. Joe

Did you ever get this fixed, I just had the fuel pump replaced and now my gas cap light is on too?
What was the fix. My 2010 is doing this also

There was a plug that they did not plug back in. I don't know if it was a vacuum line or what, but I plugged that back in and it went out the next day
Bought use 2014 ram Pickup . OK Until I filled it first time . Brought it back to dealer . Made appointment for later date to check it .Still under warranty . shop man said it could take a few days for computer to reset .This has been 5 days .Cab is on tight . My fear is I think previous owner or shop cleared the codes to sell it . Is that possible ?Good looking truck 50000 miles
Fuel cap loose and engine light
Had the gas cap message. Disconnecting positive. Cal LS on the 2011 ram 2500 for 30 seconds wored. Reset it. Thanks for the help. Mike. Rochester ny
It worked for me too!!!!!
My gas cap on dash on takes long time to start it just cranks code po308 comes up
My 2012 has the same issue , but only after the shop replaced 2 headlight wiring harnesses and reolaced thev recalled Frame Brackets. I took my truck back to shop they told me I needed a new fuel cap so they cleared to code. New cap was not the issue. I have taken the cap on and off approximately 5vtimes a day. The Gas cap light and the sevice engine light stayed on for 5 days. I filled the tank in my truck and the gas cap light finally went off.
My 2003 has the same issue. Took it to dealer and bought new gascap, they cleared code but engine light and gascap indicator came back on within days. Took back to dealer 2 more times and they still can't figure it out. I disconnected battery and cleaned battery terminals and code cleared , but indicator came back on again within days.
GuruVLWT5- Same issue here with my 2010, no issues until the tank bracket recall. It’s been back to dealer 4 times & it came back on again!!!!!! Have you had any luck yet with a fix?

Alrighty so I'm having the same problem in my 2008 Ram 1500, I was told buy a mechanic that the problem isn't the gas cap but a tar box that had something to do with the emissions was the problem , anybody else near this?
Having the same problem ever since the dealer did a recall for the front tank bracket. Also have the engine light on. Cleared the codes using a code reader. Codes came back within a few minutes of driving. Codes were p0456 p0457.
Check gas cap light can illuminate for a couple reasons...loose or leaking cap...leaking evap line or faulty evap sensor. Majority of the time it is just worn threading on the cap itself or worn rubber ring of gas cap. Light will turn off, about 20 miles driving after adjusting cap. A trip to the dealer could be beneficial, as gas leaks whether fumes or liquid, are extremely hazardous, and your safety is of highest importance!
I took the Batery cables off pos & neg waited a few mints put them back on and it was gone the gas cap light that is and it’s a 2012 1500 Ram
had gas cap light and found a nicked hose fixed hose but gas cap light was still on, the trick to shutting it off was hitting the trip meter button on speedometer cluster.
never buy Dodge again , keep replacing sencers
Just had this start happening the other day on my 2011 Ram 1500. It’s not throwing a engine light though. Just keeps telling me to check my fuel cap.
Try this: open gas filler cap, inspect the base of the cap to ensure that the rubber ring gasket is not worn, torn or missing completely. Then, turn that rubber ring, in place, just enough that its usual contact points have changed. Then, take some grease, even vaseline will work, and apply a small amount to the rubber ring to keep the rubber pliable. Before reinstalling cap, check the top of the tank's filler tube, run your finger around it to see that there is no damage or rust accumulation. Take a small piece of steel wool and gently rub the area of the tube that makes contact with the filler cap's rubber ring. Be careful not to lose the steel wool or particle debris down the tube. Replace the gas cap onto the filler tube. This may improve the connection of the cap to the tube and eliminate any vapor or pressure losses that are triggering the evap sensor. If the gas cap symbol has illuminated on the dash, this trick may remove it, however, if you have a tripped check engine code that refers to evap, only an ecm scanner can remove that code once this trick has been performed with the grease and steel wool!
I bought my Ram, brand new, in June 2014. Today, it has 505,000 km on it. I have had issues, but overall I am pleased with this truck. The Hemi 5.7 engine is one tough and reliable motor. There are no perfect vehicles, just like there are no perfect people. Everything and everyone, is flawed, in one way or another. This Ram owner will definitely be buying another Ram, one day, Lord willing! motor!
2011 Ram 1500 with P0456 and P0457 after frame bracket recall as well. Anyone get this fixed yet? I’ve replaced the Leak Detection Pump, the evap solenoid, and the gas cap.

2015 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 Engine Light and Gas Cap icon were lit. Inspected cap and it was definitely worn but gasket ring looked and felt okay. Cheap enough to buy a new cap so I did. Drove a couple days and check engine and cap lights stayed on. Disconnected positive terminal 90 seconds. On restart all looked good. 2 days later and only the gas cap indicator came back on (not the check engine). How can it light one without the other? Autozone won’t run a code check and lord only knows what the dealer will charge OR what they’ll come up with. How to check evac sensor and replace hose?
Go to another Autozone. The one near my house checked mine.

What I have found conclusively is: no one knows what caused the light to come on. This includes dealers, shĂ detree mechanics and plain old fix it ourselves guys. Sure, the disconnect positive lead works, for a little while. Then the light comes back on after a couple of days. After which the check engine light comes on. In my case, the check engine light doesn't throw a code. So, in light of the prognosis in which cause and effect cannot be verfied, here is what "I" recommend. Go buy a relatively inexpensive code reader that will reset the check engine light when it happens. Disconnect the positive lead on the battery to reset the gas cap light. Then, wait for somebody to figure out why this keeps happening.
same issue 2014 ram. this is craze. 2 new gas caps i replaced the evap sens. unplugged everything and still have a gas cap light and engine light. from the reading and all the comments all over the internet it sounds like its about time for a class action because this is too much. resolution needs to be found.

Have a 2014 Ram 1500 Hemi...same exact thin has been going on for almost 2 months. Dealer wants $155 just to look at it, and it was really obvious they don't give a damn what my problem is...they acted totally bored and unconcerned. I have had every major truck brand in this class, and this WILL be my last Dodge...have never had any problems with any of my other trucks...this just sucks.
@ricker2442 ok so I fixed it myself after much time and focus lol. What I found was my truck didn’t have the seal gasket thing at all. I bought my truck brand new and after getting a new part that came with the gasket (the first one that I got didnt) I was able to fix it. Part was 23 bucks on amazon got the gasket watched this kid on YouTube show me how to put the gasket on first then had to really push it then twist and the light went out. Did yours have that gasket if not it should do the trick. I’ve never fixed anything on a truck and I felt like super woman because I was sick of looking at that light! Get the gasket don’t just replace the part. My truck did NOT have the gasket originally!
@ricker2442, What gasket did you replace and what is the part number?
Dorman 310-219 Evaporative System Integrity Module for Select Alfa Romeo / Chrysler / Fiat Models .....amazon
Part and gasket. Put the gasket on first then the part with a gentle push and twist will click in place. I also disconnected the battery before I did it and it’s been perfect!

Hi just bought a 2016 dodge ram 1500 5.7L and gas cap light was on and service manager promised that it would be fixed before I purchased the truck and only 4 days later light is back on but no code. Guy at work has a 2004 and dealership replaced everything and light still came back on. I will mention the $23 part and seal and see what they say
