Transmission drain and fill

Asked by jaded_acura Aug 26, 2017 at 09:31 PM about the 2004 Acura MDX AWD with Touring Package and Entertainment System

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I got a case of Honda ATF fluid to do the x3 drain
and fill today.
Well, upon taking the drain plug off the
transmission, 6.5 quarts is the amount that drained
out.
I added 6 quarts back (at the recommendation of
my Auto shop class instructor because 6 came out)

Ran it through the gears and drained again, almost
8 quarts came out the 2nd time.

Final fill we added only 3 quarts.

Why did 6.5 quarts come out when we first drained
it, when it only calls for 3.5-4 at most? Why did
almost 8 quarts come out the 2nd time?

The YouTube videos I've watched says 3.5-4 quarts
will come out and that's how much comes out, do
that x3.

My instructor wasn't sure why so much was in
there, other than the Honda dealer over filled the
transmission last August when I paid them to drain
and fill.

Any insights are greatly appreciated!

Yes was it overfilled? And second time car and trans was hot so you got the expansion quantity out the second time. Trans fluid expands when hot. Recommendation says to drop and refill hot. Do not flush trans over 100K.

Changing solenoids are not very difficult. Drop pan and most transmissions you will see them right there. Change all of them as a kit. You can buy them as a set and they are not that expensive. Changing one will lead you to change another soon. I have fixed many for friends. 2 hrs tops taking your time. New fluid and a new gasket and you are good to go. Common issue with solenoids going bad is keeping fluid in too long. Another good reason to change fluid every 30K. Drop and refill only.

Honda fluid only. Amazon sells it cheaper than stealership. Honda’s are very sensitive to fluid. Only use Honda fluid.

HONDA ATF FLUID ONLY. Do not overfill, over filling will cause problems.
