Is it harmful to run in "Auto 4WD" all the time?

My front axle starting making noise while in Auto 4WD. When I switched it to 2WD the
noise stopped. Any ideas?

If it's making a noise then yes it's harmful. Something is broken, you are supposed to be able to drive like that all the time.
