AAA just changed my battery and now check engine light is on
and the "emission control" indicator is on. Not the gas cap, etc.

Apparently they did not use a code saver when changing your battery. I would have the codes read to see what is going on.

I had the very same thing happen to me....its a 2015 forrester, fb25 block, changed out the battery, however, what caused the problem was the code saver, a code saver isn't necessary on Japanese shit...only when you change out a battery on german automotives...bmw, audi, porche, mercedes, etc...what happened was the code saver popped a 7.5 amp fuse from under the hood in the relay box behind the battery...its a fuse that allows the obd 2 port to be read, without it, a code scanner won't boot on to read the diagnostics or fault codes. Replaced the fuse, un-hooked the negative terminal for a few minutes, reconnected it, and the check engine light cleared! Thats its!

I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN ON A 2014 FORESTER. REPLACED THE FUSE, DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. ALL SET

Can you say more about where the fuse is located? I looked in my 2013 Forester and couldn’t find it.
