Just noticed that underneath the air filter in my 2015 Forester, there is a large white plastic tank, similar in appearance to the windshield and coolant tanks. What is it exactly? I can't find any mention of it in the owner's manual. Just curious.

I think that's just to catch any fluid that happens to get into the air filter. That's a different way of doing it, but if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Nope! that's for part of tuning the air intake system. Its for resonance and noise . If you have the turbo it cuts the high pitch whine . If not it still deadens the sound entering the cabin
