2015 Forester 2i limited CVT performance in snow/ice

Asked by Rogerdoger1 Sep 21, 2015 at 02:37 PM about the 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i Limited

Question type: General

I'm considering a 2016 Forester 2i limited. I am concerned how the CVT performance is on snow & ice. Minnesota can be brutal at times.

I lived in Wyoming for a while (in winter, but only 5 weeks) in 2013 and and guarantee you Wyoming can compete on the brutality of the cold and road conditions. The WY-DOT does as well as they can but when it's 40° below they may as well use a Zamboni on the roads. At least you can use chains or studded tires (legal in WY) but we got off topic. Personally I would never own a CVT. Not yet. The concept is great, the so-far designs suck. Those guys are ignorant. BUY A FORESTER BUY A FORESTER Don't worry, just buy a crate of 48 quarts of oil and carry with you and every time you stop add one. Of course check dip-stick first, you may only need a half-quart if all you drove was to the grocery 4 block away. Now, as for the CVT they have not been successful in Toyotas. Lots of complaints and outright failures. For example I considered buying a 2015 Camry and with the V6 was a dog to get going, but at about 25 -30 mph took off like a rocket. That is my personal take on a CVT

I agree with FordNut, I am not ready to buy anything that has a CVT yet. Also don't buy any Subaru until they get their oil consumption issues solved and they take the blame and offer repairs. As far as CVT's go Subaru's are good ones. The transmission has nothing to do with traction on ice but all wheel drive does.
