Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Gas tank was about a quarter full before it was filled with kerosene by
accident. Drove for about 15 miles on highway before car started acting up so
pulled off at an exit and turned the car off. What are my next steps? Am
traveling so in an unfamiliar area. Please help

Have it towed to a shop so they can drain your gas tank.

No resolution yet. My kiddo is on a road trip so the car is over 250 miles from home. I finally found a shop 30 miles from the car that can work on it this week and now I'm waiting for the tow truck to tow it there. It's been over 3 hours and the tow truck hasn't arrived. I will update once the car gets fixed, whenever that may be...

Don't you love that tow truck wait? Worse than waiting for water to boil. ;)

You're not kidding. The new ETA is 7pm. I placed the request at 11:30am. So frustrating...

DO NOT try to start the car. It probably won't, but if it does you may blow a connecting rod from severe detonation. After draining ALL fluid I'd refill with PREMIUM only so as to average out the octane from residual diesel (kerosene) still in there. Perhaps drive on premium fuel for a couple tankfuls before returning to 87oct.

Update in case anyone accidentally puts kerosene in their gas tank...the repair shop drained the tank, cleaned out the lines, and replaced the spark plugs. The car is running fine now. Thank you everyone for your input!

Ernie. I doubt Kerosene would detonate in a gasoline engine. Not nearly enough compression.
