why is my 1998 gmc jimmy over heating?

two days ago my temp gauge started rising. later that night on my way home from work it red lined and then the check gauges light came on. then it started smoking. i had to pull over and leave it there over night. then yesterday i picked up coolant and drove it home. went to drive it today. 2 miles later its on the red line and the check gauge light is back on. have to get to work tomorrow. what can i do?

gotta look at the simple things. make shure you have coolant and that your bleed it properly. check if your engine fan is working. does it happen with only a/c on . etc. If not you might have a thermostat or water pump problem. (thats jumping to conclusion, cause these things are the most common things to fail)
