Power Steering on a 2015 VW Jetta 1.8l

I have a 2015 VWJetta 1.8l engine.  My
power steering makes a whiny,  grinding
noise when turning. Especially more
noticeable when it's cold, not as much but
still there as it warms up. Usually it means
add fluid. I'm certain this model has an
electronic power steering unit. How does
that get lubricated or is it something else. No
warning lights ever came up.
