engine oil consumption

Asked by GuruV6F9G Sep 13, 2018 at 10:31 AM about the 2016 Kia Sorento EX AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The engine seems to be consuming more motor oil than normal and there is no
external leak.  What could be the problem?  I have a 2016 kia sorento with  a 4
cylinder engine.

Its burning oil...just like all these 1000 + other Kias are!

The fix some of the oil burning problem change your PCV valve it's a $10 part lot of the new cars have this for environmental purposes if the PCV valve goes bad it will consume the oil in the vehicle that's what Kia should have been doing I have a 2016 Sorento and a 2012 optima that's all you have to do and that will cut down on it and change the viscosity of your oil from 5w 20 to 5w 30 5w 20 too thin of an oil for that type of engine you only want to run that or 0-40 in the turbo

Had a 2019 Sorento EX AWD, just traded in with 14K, used about 1qt every 1500 miles. Not burning, no smoke, just disappeared. Dealer says it was "normal". Reading everywhere the 5W20 oil that is needed to make federal CAFE regulation for mileage,,, Get rid of these if you own one, Kia most likely won't replace engines. Check your oil weekly.

I got the same problem with my Sorento 2013 LX. I changed the pcv valve and put high millage oil. it seems it’s working. I stay away from synthetic oil 5w-20 since it is too thin. Also, I decided to change its interval from 8-10K to 5K. From that you will feel that it is not burning oil that much. It is a good practice to check the dip stick once in a while.

My 2012 Kia Sorento was my third Kia, bought my first in 2005. I never had any problems with either previous vehicle, which I had purchased new. I bought the used for $8500, and started having high oil consumption about 6 months later. Then my engine seized. My mechanic got it running again, just barely. His advice: get rid of it as quickly as possible because Kia engines everywhere were having the same problem, as well as having oil consumption issues (I hadn't told him anything about my troubles with that). So I took his advice and sold it, at a $5000 loss. Even that was hard as so many already know about these problems. They also know Kia refuses to do anything about it. I will never buy another Kia ever. They lost what was a very loyal customer who feels shafted.

I was using about 1 1/2 qts oil every 1000 miles. Took it back to Kia so they can document the consumption. They said they put a solution into the cylinders to free up the rings. So far I put about 2000 miles on it and no oil consumption

We have a 2016 Sorento and the same issue, going through 3 quarts every 3500 miles. We are going through consumption tests now with the dealership, but last "test" they said the numbers don't look low enough but they will send to Kia anyway to review.
