Burning oil
Asked by Sportslife06 Aug 25, 2018 at 05:06 PM about the 2016 Kia Sorento SX V6 AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
We have a 2016 Kia Sorento on three different occasions
the Kia has burned all of oil between oil changes once
around 30,000 changes the oil went back after driving
1000 it was fine at the next oil change it was still fine. At
our last oil change at 69,000 it was low again changed it
went back to recheck and it was two quart low. The cat
also shut off at the red light but started back up with no
problem. No warning lights have ever came on. Called Kia
they are going to change the oil again and have us drive it
1000 miles and recheck if low again they will send info to
extended warranty department to see if they will pay for
the repairs. See if they will pay. Why have the warranty if
they don’t cover the cost. We had an small issue after out
of manufacture warranty and I was told I didn’t have the
extended warranty. After that I showed them my paper
were I had it so to me it sounds like I am about to get the
run around on fixing my vechile. Has anyone else had the
burning oil issue?

My 2016 Sorento burns a lot of oil. I have 123,000 miles on it
Same problem with 2016 Kia Optima... I smell a rat... Kia has had major recalls in the past for high oil consumption!
Sportslife06 answered 6 years ago
I am dealing with having to take the Kia back to the dealership every 500 Miles to have them check it for about 4-6 times and then they will see what they can do. This is so crazy.
Have a Kia Sorrento 2016 with 2.4 engine 59,000 miles still warranty consumes 1 1/4 oil every 3000 miles they did a consumption test at dealership kia they said that is NORMAL!! to consume kia engines a 1/4 oil every 3000 miles, they dont want to help me with this issue. I should had bought a Toyota instead.
I'm having the same problem but mine is burning a lot. I add at least 3 quarts between oil changes. Kia did an oil consumption test and less than 1,000 the oil fell under the low line on the dipstick. They took it out of service and are looking into a new engine but something tells me they'll dip everything possible to get out of it.
We are having the same issue. We were 1.5 quarts low after 1500 miles. Would you like to contact each other and see if we are going through the same steps or processes. We can share info. This is crap.

I agree there is too many people having the exact same problem. There has to be something wrong with so many of us having the same issue. As I am typing this I am sitting at the Kia dealership having the oil check again. They keep telling me it has to be 4-6 visits then they will check with the extended warranty to see what they think. I know what the answer will be sorry nothing we can do.
I have a 2012 but am experiencing the same problem. There is no leak yet the oil seems to just vanish. How is this possible?
I have a 2016 Kia Sorento that is losing oil too. Just went through the Kia oil consumption test with my dealership which consisted of two 500 mile tests and one 1,000 mile test. The test consisted of the mechanic checking the oil level. The first two 500 mile tests showed no oil loss while the 1,000 mile test showed it a quart down. If I do the math, it will have lost 6.5 quarts over the length of a 7,500 oil change which seems excessive to me. The Kia dealership said it is within specs for Kia but suggested I open a case with Kia anyway.
Thank you, I understand an inexpensive four cylinder vehicle with high mileage but would expect a better result than 6.5 quarts over the length of an oil change. With that consumption I would think that the oil would be basically new at all times and a change wouldn't be needed. Sounds like the dealership is being untruthful if "it is within specs ...". Please keep me in the loop with your "open case". Thanks again, G
My 2016 Sorento Burns about 6 qts between oil changes which I do every 5,000 miles. I have used synthetic oil since the first oil change and I am religious about changing the oil. I want to take it to KIA dealership but the one local to me is horrible. They actually lost “misplaced” my vehicle for a day. Blamed it on the Service Manager being on vacation. I know what they want will say about this. Current miles are 144,000 but problem started around 40,000 at about 2.5 qts between services.
I also have a 2016 Kia Sorento, and the last two oil changes which i go 5000 between each oil change I to am down to the bottom of dip stick. Went to have oil changed, they suggested i use the mid range synthetic oil, that i would have less burning of oil using the higher grade of oil. This just stated at 70,000 did not have this issue before. Now at 78,300 on mileage. I will check it more often on this synthetic oil and see if it makes a difference??
I have 2012 KIA Sorento with 96,000 miles. Suddenly Started loosing oil, 1 quart every 500 miles, after jumping through all if the hoops KIA replaced the engine yesterday. I credit the dealer who finally told the KIA Rep "you guys need to step up to the plate and do something". They did. BE PERSISTANT!
i have a 2017 Sorento with 59,000 miles and uses up to 4 qts between oil changes, which are every 6000 miles
tem354 can you get ahold of me. We are dealing with the same issue and would like to talk about what you have gone through. Matthew Jones...4026124966 or jonesmatt44@yahoo.com
We are dealing with the SAME issues! 107k miles, a quart+ every 3-500 miles. Dealer says it's within specs. I've NEVER heard of an engine do that. Oh, this was after they said it was not affected by the service campaign for 2.4L engines (97k mi). At 101K miles after oil change and more oil consumption, they claim it was the VC gasket, at $400+. Past the warranty, of course. Opening up a case with KIA Consumer has so far not gotten me very far. It's been 6k miles and many months of frustration, and still no resolution. Might be time to lawyer up.
We ended up trading our 2016 Kia for GMC Terrain this week. our KIA dealership pretended to know nothing about this oil issue told me I was out of warranty to. Just traded it, not dealing with it or KIA anymore.
Just completed second 500 mile oil consumption test at dealer, 1.2 qts low . Returning next week and if low again they are filing a report with Kia warranty
My dealer did the same and found the same, but they basically said we're SOL since they didn't note the excessive oil consumption until after 101k miles, 1,000 miles beyond the powertrain warranty. Even though we mentioned it when we brought the car in for the engine recall at 96k miles.
The Kia dealership says I have to replace the engine. burning up oil from Full to Low in 700 miles. They said the "filed a claim" with Kia by sending diagnostics from my car to Kia about the latest recall, and they said Kia denied claim. Dealership also says "it is normal to burn 1 quart of oil in 1000 miles." The Sorento has never burned oil before, until 103,000 -106,000, these last 3 months. I feel certain it is all related to defective engine manufacturing. Some cars were given extended warranties of upto 150,000 miles on engines - apparently not mine, even through it was in the recall. I am collecting records and I will keep on Kia as long as it takes.
I am the original owner of a 2012 Kia Sorrento. Took for a routine oil change in September and was told there was no oil in it; never had an oil light come on. Went back in November after 3,000 miles and it was fine. My oil light came on this morning and there is no oli in it. My husband added 3 quarts and light is still on. My car only has 61,000 miles on it!! I feel like Kia will do nothing and hate to have car payments again.
I have a 2104 Sorento. No work was done per the recall. In August I realized the oil is disappearing. No indicator lights came on and there was basically no oil. Now I’m adding constantly. There is no sign of a leak and no smoke from the exhaust either. Where is the oil going? My car has been at the dealership for three days now and they said it’s not an issue covered under any recall. They are saying it’s pistons or piston rings( waiting on a call back to get the full info)

My daughter bought a 2017 sportage with 50,000 miles on it and it uses alot of oil but it under the kia guideline. .85 of a quart ever 1000 miles but it getting worse. Kia has gave us the run around and won't fix it. We have to take it to the dealership ever 1000 miles to get topped off. Been there 8 or 9 times. Probably should just let it blow up. # HATEKIA
I have a 2012 Kia Sorento with 150k km and at about the 130k it’s been burning a lot of oil. Down 2.5 litres of oil at 2500. So around one litre per 1000k.
My 2016 is doing the same they are conducting a ( Oil consumption) on mine Also last oil change the had to do a update on my computer for this issue. But they told me 2000 miles in almost ready for a oil change in 1200 miles even so they said drive for 2000 took pictures of dip stick before and after I was half a quart low.what prompted me to check my oi! Last week February 7th 2019 was i was heading out of town. I called the then told them my oil was at the low mark. Service department told me to put oil in and keep checking . So now what ????my car is over Warranty.
I have a 2016 Kia Sorento.Between oil changes I noticed it burning at least. a quart.
2015 sorento 62,000 miles on it got oil changed 5000,ago bone dry started taping now i know why some one traded it in i still have 4yrs of payments im sick to my stomach.2nd owner warranty ran out at 60,000.

Random oil consumption. After 1000 miles, 1/4 qt down Another 1000 miles, 1/8 qt down. Another 1000 miles 1 1/4 qt down. Another 5000 miles, 3 1/2 qts down... The GDI engine as well as others, have e defective connecting rod at manufacturing. There is a likely connection between the defect and oil consumption. Advice, if Kia will not replace the engine block, write Kia and express concern over the legal issues concerning losing a life due to engine and connecting rod malfunction. It may not only be YOU that is injured or killed, but an innocent party.
We bought a 2015 Kia Sorento with 64+I miles and my husband told the dealership people about the burning oil problem, wrote down a list of tasks to be done to the car before taking out of their shop... they did everything but the burning oil issue. The car is burning a lot of oil, my husband called them up... now they're saying that the car warranty is 60000 miles instead of 100,000 they told us 2 years ago. We had to get an extended warranty insurance and as soon as it starts we're taking it to the dealership in order to fix it (which I doubt), then get another car.... never ever another Kia.
Same problem here. I have a Kia Sorento 2013. The engine burns all the oil I put in. I have made my mechanic check and there is no leakage or so ever. Honestly Kia should do something abt it.
Same problem. 2013 Sorento 2.4. Have always had Mobil 1 full synthetic in it since the first oil change. I do all the oil changes and 90% of the repairs on all 4 of our family vehicles and have for 30 years. Been changing the synthetic in the Sorento every 5-6k. At 66k on the original motor, the motor locked up. Just stopped. No warning. Oil level was fine. Never lost/burned any oil up till that point. This happened just before the recall. Kia tried to claim it was bad oil initially, but when I inspected the motor at the dealer with the mechanic and the tech, there was ZERO sludge and ZERO evidence of lack of maintenance - obviously, because Mobil 1 is not going to cause oil related failures when changed as often as I have and do. Anyhow, they installed a new motor for free under warranty, and I've put another 58k (124k on the vehicle now) on the new motor, again, always Mobil 1 full synthetic every 5-6k. So I'm changing the oil yesterday and discover I'm down 2 quarts. First time for that. It was typical to be down maybe 1/2 quart every 5-6k with both motors. Zero signs of leaks, so obviously now I'm burning oil like everyone else in here. What I don't see is anyone talking about trying a thicker viscosity oil, like maybe 5w30 instead of the 5w20. Has anyone tried that? Back in my youth as a motorcycle mechanic, I worked on a lot of Harleys. It was common to run straight 60w or 70w oil to keep the old shovelheads from burning and leaking all their oil. IF the Kia issue truly is piston rings, or even valve seals for that matter, then heavier oil should at least slow down the burning process. Feel fee to email me at (no spaces) p s u c h a r s k i @ t d s.net if you want to discuss ideas. Thanks.
Same issue as all of you above. Has anyone been through the process with success in getting Kia to cover this under a recall? I went to Kia last week and one of the workers said, "yes there is a possibility that your vehicle can fall under the recall for the burning oil issue." I went in yesterday for what I thought was to start the process and I was told def not - Kia will not cover the burning oil issue at all, there is no sense in opening a case and that I need a new engine. I am SOOOO UPSET!!
2016 Sorento - mine is doing it too. I first noticed when I executed a fast stop and the oil light blinked on and off a couple times. 53K miles. It's been religiously cared for and the oil changed every 5000 miles since I bought it. I see no evidence of a leak or burning oil, and it runs fine.
I posted earlier, Kia Sorento 2014 burning up entire oil tank in 600 miles. Dealership said all the valve seals were bad at 105,000. I had to put in a new (used) engine, which of course falls under the same engine manufacturing problem recalls as the origin. I applied to Kia Consumer Affairs, I sent in documentation, the problem was diagnosed exactly 30 days after my 100,000 mile extended warranty ended. Kia Skillman Indiana dealership denied my request for reimbursement, and some people there even told me that most Sorento engines are failing right about 100,000 miles. I asked for my claim to reviewed by Kia Consumer, and they did, and say they also deny my request for reimbursement. The person claimed "she talked to engineers" and excessive oil use is not related to the oil passageway defective machining in the factory. BS
My 2014 Kia sorento started burning oil at 76,000 miles. It's at 83,000 now. have to put 5 quarts in it between oil changes. I'm seriously thinking of talking to a lawyer about a class action suit against Kia! This is ridiculous! Look at the 100s of people who have posted this problem! Can you imagine how many are out there that havent posted? I'll keep everyone updated!
I have a 2012 Kia Sorento. Took it in for engine valve recall check at 92K miles, which required the dealership to change the oil. At next oil change around 98K miles, my mechanic said there was barely a quart of oil in it. I thought the dealership made a mistake on the oil change. Mechanic recommended that I check oil in between oil changes -- checked oil at 2500 miles on oil change -- it needed 4 quarts of oil (this was the week of Christmas, btw). There are no oil leaks, oil seems to just vanish! Sorento is burning oil -- it seems to have started burning oil without warning. No warning lights for low oil have ever been displayed. Scheduled appt with dealership following week - had 101K miles on it. Have been doing an oil consumption test...every 1000 - 1500 miles. At 1000 - 1200 miles Sorento is 1.5 quarts low (2 tests). At 900 miles it was 1 quart low (1 test). Getting ready to take it in for a 4th test.
I just started my " oil consumption test " again. 2017 sorento has 63,600,iles and dealer has been telling me that I need to use factory oil filter, vs fram, well guess what, 1100 miles since dealer did last oil change and I was 2 qts low
Wow. They are never going to take responsibility for these engines.
Right there with the rest of you. 2016 Kia Sorento with almost 70,000 miles on it. Burning oil faster and faster. Currently in process of doing oil consumption tests. But, I will be at the 1000 mile checkpoint while in another state visiting my mom who lives in a home with dementia for Easter. I'm not skipping a visit with my mom because of a faulty car. I was debating what to do and searched up "Kia Sorento burning oil" to find hundreds of posts on various sites of this same problem. Ridiculous. I was told 1/2 quart disappearing in 950 miles was "normal". Maybe normal for Kia but no other manufacturer. I find this frustrating as I still owe over $10,000 dollars on a 3 year old car that is burning car at alarming rates. I agree with the person who stated a class action suit is in order. I thought my problem would be covered under warranty, but after reading all the posts on the internet, I suspect that will be an uphill battle with no good outcome.
Is there anyone consulting a lawyer regards this issues I'm having the same problem with my 16" Sorrento and dealer and kia says is normal to consume oil!!!! Any solutions?? ideas?? class action lawsuit???

I have a Sorento 2016 and I could not drive it anymore it was making this gurgling sound and it looked like I was drawning the engine with oil or gas. Kia told me that I had bad gas ! I f I would of had bad gas I imagine I couldnt have started the car and drove 30 minutes ! It was smelling like burning oil ... My car is still in their lot and I am soooo mad ! They do not want to investigate more .... We had to recall latelly with one of the valves leaking oil ! To be continued ...Should of bought a Toyota to :)
2011 kia optima lx ( GDI ) Losing about 1 quart every 1000 miles. Dealership telling me it’s normal. Thinking about leaving it idling for hours to burn more than 1 quart within 1000 miles. Normal car engine wont burn oil idling. I have owned several old cars in my student years. None of which did this. This is ridiculous. I have lifetime warranty so i’m going to keep at it with the dealership. Smh
As a follow up to my previous post, I have a 2016 Kia Sorento, that is also burning oil. Took it in for a 4th oil consumption test last week. It had been 1,700 miles since it was last topped off at the dealership, and it had consumed 3 quarts of oil. The dealership informed me...that the process has changed -- and they are not supposed to be doing the oil consumption tests anymore (so this was the last one, #4)...they are really only looking for fault code P1326 (this is related to the latest software update to the Knock Sensor Detection System). Furthermore, my dealership told me to contact Kia Affairs and open a claim (for the excessive oil consumption)...since my vehicle has not thrown the P1326 fault code, there is really nothing more they can do. Funny...when I walked into the dealership several months ago....they told me how easy it would be to have Kia replace the engine....we would do 3 oil consumption tests, they would contact Kia...and prove to them it was an issue (was told to plan this taking a full day)....then they would give me a loaner vehicle while they replaced the engine. Now, it's up to me to contact Kia Affairs. I suspect Kia Affairs will do nothing about this! I commented to the dealership, that customers are the ones getting screwed. He told me, "mam, I understand your frustration. But, I'm only an employee, I don't make the cars." Nice. It's ridiculous this vehicle is burning a quarter of oil every 500 miles. It barely has 100K miles on it. Never again. I will never, ever purchase another Kia again. Fair warning. Don't do it, run far away from Kia.

2012 Kia Sorento using 2-3 quarts of oil a month. No sign of an oil leak or of burning oil. Vehicle was going dead every 2-3 miles. Kia Dealer kept car several days and charged me for an alternator. Vehicle still going dead every few miles, Kia Dealer said high pressure fuel pump. Changed fuel pump...Vehicle still going dead. So after spending about $1200 at the dealer with no results, I fixed the issue with a $7 PCV valve. Vehicle runs fine, but still uses a lot of oil.
2014 Sorento 2.4L - 104k miles. Extended Warranty. Oil light flickers on/off at around 1,700 miles post oil change. Just started the consumption test this week. Reading all of these post, I am not holding my breath.
Started oil test again. After 1000 miles dealer added 2.1 qts. 3 weeks later and 800 more miles added another 1.7 qts. One more and I will be dealing direct with regional manager. 64.000 miles . Has anyone looked into class action? Get the word out for more people like us and I may inquire depending on Kia response

My 12 soul is just now doing this. The oil seems to vanish after about a thousand miles. I have 106,000 miles on the car now and did all of my maintenance through Kia with no problem.
Make your complaint count. File a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
I have a 2012 Kia Sorento LX with 125,000 miles on it. It burns at least 2 quarts of oil per tank of gas. I was told by the dealer that the engine needs to be replace. We have had the engine service as recommended by the manufacturer. This engine should not have gone bad in 125,000 miles. I filed a complaint with NHTSA and recommend that other Kia owners with this problem do the same. Since this company is refusing to do the right thing on their own, maybe the United States Government can get this company to do the right thing.

I'm having the same issue and I've had a bad experience with the service department at my local dealer ship. I smell something fishy going on and I don't like it. I drive a 2013 Optima and recently had an oil change. When they went to change my oil, they told me that the car was unusually low on oil. I didn't think anything of it, and went about my normal habits. 2000 miles later, I took my car in because my tire was leaking air. I wasn't due for an oil change, but when they checked the oil, it was nearly empty. They checked for leaks, but said that everything was fine. I told them that everything was not fine because a car should not burn through nearly all of it's oil within 2k miles. They told me they could run an oil consumption test, but that it would be an ongoing process to get the results and that even then, Kia likely wouldn't pay to have the issue fixed. The tech said that they would just replace the engine when it failed and he actually recommended that I intentionally blow up the engine so that Kia would replace it!! Wtf?! My tech told me that he had gotten several other complaints reporting the same issue, but there was nothing they could do. While I was in the waiting room, an older lady was having the same issue with her car, but they told her that they could take apart her engine to try to find the issue but it would cost her thousands of dollars.. I interrupted and asked why I had been told something completely different. The tech guy nervous and said that he was just relaying what he had been told. I don't know what's going on, but this issue seems widespread and Kia needs to fix it. I'm going yo call another dealership with better service to see what they tell me about the issue.
I have 2016 Kia Sorento, over a year ago started the fiasco of taking to dealer for burning oil. Sadly today my son driving to work said light came on and knocking. They replaced oil sending sensor less than month ago, dye tested for leaks several months ago, blamed Jiffy lube, and today towed to dealership. Certain after reading this engine needs replaced. This started prior to 50,000 miles, still not to 100,000. Dealership stated after sensor they were no longer responsible! Furious, and still owe on it. Any actions I can take please share, I’ll follow up.
I am surprised with this as I am having this problem as of this week. 155K. 2014. If anyone is starting a class action law suit, please let me know as I want to be in on it. cheryls63@hotmail.ca
2014 Kia Sorento 4 cylinder. 102k miles. Consuming over half the oil after 1000 miles. Kia pulled the engine and I had 2 cracked piston rings in cylinder 1 and 2. Under extended warranty - Kia is replacing my engine
My 2013 Kia Sorento with 94,000 miles is consuming 1 1/2 quarts of oil every 300 miles. After bringing it in several times for consumption tests, Kia is saying it appears I have been tampering with the oil and somehow taking oil out. They replaced the pvc valve today and said that it should fix the problem. Now I have to do 2 more additional 1,000 mile tests. I can’t even check the oil in between times because they have put a special paint on it to detect if it is tampered with. Wish the first tests would have had the paint so I would have that in the record. I guess it’s just cross my fingers and pray I don’t run out of oil. It infuriates me that they have no regard to my safety, my children’s safety, or anyone else on the road that I may encounter if my car suddenly locks up.
Last test I had at 66,000 miles I was again 2qts low in 1000 miles. I was instructed to bring in for compression test. One cylinder in 40 lbs below other and I am being told that dealer filed for an engine replacement.
2012 kia sorento SUPER bad oil issue. Been complaining over a year. They keep saying its fine. Its to the point that I am putting 2 quarts in every other day. (Commuting about 1hr to and from work currently) even when I was just riding around town I needed to add 2 qts every week. Sometimes it smokes. My oil light NEVER comes on even when its empty! This has been a nightmare with kia and I can't wait to get out of this car. I will never ever shop kia again.
My 2012 is burning oil so bad i had to put about 7 quarts in a week i go next week ti see wat they say
My 2016 Sorrento is having the same issues. Burning tons of oil with no leaks. I’m furious!!!!! Something needs to done. I have 67,000 on mine and it started at almost 40,000 ♀️♀️
I have a 2016 Kia Sorrento. Having the same issues for about three months now. prior to this issue we were having an issue with the car making a very loud noise from the front and kia said there was nothing wrong with it. Took it for an oil change, the tech said there was NO oil at all. We have the changed the oil every 5000 miles with Synthetic. We have taken it twice to have them check at 500 miles. No lights ever came on, i drive back and forth in Houston Traffic , i am surprised the car never locked up with NO OIL! We took it back this past Saturday and the oil was low again at 1000 miles. The dealership still has the car and the motor ripped apart because they cant figure out the problem. They have contact KIA and we are waiting to hear back if they will replace the engine. I sure hope they do.
i had success. Kia replaced my engine, 69,000 miles so I am happy just stay with it
I have a 2016 Kia Soul. I had the recall performed. Shortly after the recall, I noticed my check engine oil light quickly flash on and then off again. When I checked, there was no oil. I took it to Kia a few days later and they started doing oil consumption tests. They told me not to add any oil, and had me bring it in every 1,000 miles. Each time, I took a picture of my dip stick, and each time they told me my engine was consuming oil within specs. Today was my third oil consumption test. Before I went in, I took a picture and it was on “L.” The advisor took me outside (away from other customers) to go over the results of the test. She said cars typically consume about 1/4 oil every 3,000 miles. She said I should be fine and there was nothing wrong with my car. I cannot believe Kia would lie to me or treat their customers like this. I will never, ever do business with them again. Is anyone else having the same issue AFTER having the recall performed?
My 2016 Kia Sorrento 2.4 GDI engine 4 cylinders, was consuming 1/4 oil every 3000 miles, I did like 3 oil consumption test in different s dealers all of them told me that was over the Kia specs!! I dont believe that, suddenly my vehicle started to consume much more gas as well like 18 MPG for being a 4 cyl !!!!!!! and I notice lost of power as well. Then told me that my computer needed a software update to avoid the engine to blown. I took it to Kia dealer they did the update, and after 10,000 miles at 71,000 miles exactly my engine had a hole in the block which made my engine blown. Somehow I took it to the dealer and they honor it warranty and replaced the engine, no questions asked in 8 days i had my SUV back. For me was a time record to get my vehicle back with new engine. Still Im looking to trade in for a different brand. Goodbye Kia
Have 2016 sorento 2.4 with only 29000. Oil change at 27000, movike full sysntheic 5- 20. Just checked it..down a Full Quart. Just had the software update. Ughhhh

I recently had to have the motor replaced in my 2016 Kia Optima, it was burning over a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I was approximately five thousand miles past the warranty but the work was free of charge. The dealer had me do three oil comsumption tests first time 1quart per 1000 miles, next 1.2 quarts per 1000 miles 3rd time 1.6 quarts. I would advise you to take it in and protest that exactly what I did. It was a hassle but saved me a lot of money.

We’ve been to the dealership 8 times (2015 Kia Sorento). What a great reliable car they choose to stand behind of. Oil leak after oil leak “COME ON KIA OWN UP TO YOUR MISTAKE AND FIX OUR CARS”!!! I guess you’re waiting on a major fatal fire or something but wait that already happened.... smdh
I am having same issue 2016 kia optima using 3 quarts + per 5 thousand miles I was told its normal! We have the 200,000 mile warranty. I'm on second trip for oil consumption test with no answers except its normal. I am at 98,600. I think they are gonna give me the shaft!

Yup just another upset customer with Kia! Trust me it will happen and ours was before warranty and it didn’t smoke before. The last dealership visit they honored the last recall but after them taking off the manifold, I’m pretty sure they didn’t replace the $16 gasket and now it’s smoking from the top and side. Just keep an eye on it and stay safe with it. Something we shouldn’t have to worry about but good luck my friend!
We bought a new 2017 Kia Sportage with the 2.4l and it's been using oil since last year. It now has 24,000 miles on it (still under warranty) and the dealership has done 3 oil consumption test already but like everyone else here, saying it's normal usage. B.S.!! Engines don't burn thru 1.4 quarts of oil in 3000 miles unless there is a problem. We have had the oil changed at the dealership every 5k miles since we bought it however it cannot make it to the 5k service without having to have oil added in between. We opened a case with Kia affairs and they too are saying it's normal and will not repair the engine. What good is a 100,000 miles warranty if they are not going to honor it?? Me and my wife then opened up a case with the Better Business Bureau however they told us Kia is NOT guilty of not honoring their warranty as Kia's "Tech's" say the oil usage is within Kia spec's. A lawsuit needs to be done. Never will we own another Kia!!
I have a 2012 Kia Sorento and I burning through oil. I was just told I need a new engine but it would not be covered. I called Kia and they said to get a second opinion. My engine is getting worse in the meantime and it concerns me to drive it. From a quart after 800 miles to 2.5 quarts after 950 miles in only a couple of months. I filed a complaint with NHTSA and recommend others do the same. Engines have been catching fire and there is a new class action lawsuit.
Filed complaint with NHTSA
I just got off the phone with Kia after completing my third visit for the oil consumption monitoring as I was losing 1-1/2 quarts of oil in 650 miles. My car is a 2011 Optima with only 63K miles on it now. This has been going on for the last 10K miles and only getting worse. Jacob at Kia said that my engine is out of standard manufacture warranty and any diagnostics to figure out what the problem is would be an out of pocket expense. If my engine rod bearings went out then it would be covered under their recall warranty but that is only if the bearings went out. So basically they wan't me to find out the problem at my expense so they can relay that info onto other shops to avoid another class action lawsuit and recall. They said they have investigated this plenty of other times and that some of the instances required the engine to be replaced but he wouldn't tell me what the underlying cause was. Kia knows this is an issue and even their own representatives on the phone as well as service staff at the dealership know this is an issue as they all told me so. They just don't want to be on the hook for fixing it; most likely since a class action lawsuit hasn't been filed yet that I am aware of. I could tell Jacob was just regurgitating their standard warranty policy and even tried to throw in that if anything other than the rod bearings were the cause for this issue, then it would be considered normal engine wear and I would be responsible for the costs. I told him that an engine failing under 100K is not normal engine wear especially at 60K miles! I'm not happy with Kia for not owning their design/manufacturing mistakes and correcting them and would never consider purchasing another Kia or Hyundai again as this has been our second of their vehicles.
Update: I posted in here a few months back. 2013 Sorento with the 2.4 GDI. Original motor seized up without warning a couple years ago just shy of 60k. Got that motor replaced under warranty. Replacement motor started consuming oil (about a quart every 1500 miles) after just over 60k (on that motor, 120-something on the vehicle). I do all the maintenance myself. Nothing but Mobil 1 full synthetic in this Kia since new. Ran the 5w20 it calls for, and after the oil consumption started I switched to Mobil 1 5w30 + a bottle of STP oil treatment (thick as molasses). Since doing this the oil consumption slowed to about a quart every 3-4k. I should also mention that when it's down on oil, I top it off with 10w30. Basically just keeping the oil a bit thicker so it's not disappearing like it was before. I'm guessing this probably doesn't help fuel economy, but I haven't had time to pay attention, and my wife drives this POS Kia anyhow. I drive 4.0L Jeeps that actually do run forever :) . My email is psucharski@tds.net if anyone cares to share notes or ask questions.
2014 Kia Sportage - just ran an oil consumption test. In two weeks, 1,000 miles, it lost a quart of oil. Dealership claims there's an oil leak but there's no oil on the driveway or anywhere I park. We've been putting oil in it every other week or so since June.
I'm currently going through the oil consumption test with my 2016 Kia Sorento. It is consuming around 1 quart per 1000 miles, which is not normal. I'm close to my 5 year/60000 miles. However, this would be covered by the 10 year/100000 mile powertrain warranty, right?

My 2016 Kia Sorento also started using oil suddenly at around 90,000. Had oil consumption test and after first 1,000 miles was 2 qts low. After second 1,000 miles was 3 qts low so they submitted the claim to Fidelity the third party extended warranty company and they sent an inspector to look at my car. Said that the problem was burnt rings and I needed a new motor but that it wasn’t covered under my 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty because it was just leaking nothing was actually broken. So I guess I have to drive my car to the motor blows up before they may fix it. And my guess is they will then find another way to get out of it. After reading all these posts with the same issue I will be contacting a lawyer. This is crazy!!! How can Kia get away with selling such junk motors???
Just tossed a rod in my 2016 Sorento after 3 oil test well see what Kia does now
I was driving my 2013 Kia Sorento yesterday on the highway going about 50-55 MPH when all of a sudden it stalled and the engine stopped. I pulled over immediately and noticed it was extremely hot and out of oil. I still had 1,000 miles to go according to the oil change sticker from the mechanic. No oil warning light ever came on to indicate low fuel. There are also no signs of oil leaking in or around the vehicle. It was actually driving great the day before when I drove 50+ miles on mostly highway. I had my 2013 Kia Sorento towed to a local mechanic and just informed me the engine will need to be replaced. I did some research because I'm confused to what happened here and found that I'm not alone. Many other Kia & Hyundai owners have experienced this same issue. "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reportedly states that more than 6 million Hyundai and Kia vehicles have been affected by the engine defect since 2015". What are my options? I am currently looking at an estimate of $6220.00 to install a new engine. I need help. What are my options?
Notified dealership several times of issue. October 7 2019 Had oil changed at dealership. Began oil consumption test. October 21 2019 Had driven 1000 miles. Had dealership do oil consumption test and oil change. Showed 2 to 2 1/2 quarts of oil missing. Filed complaints with dealership and corporate. October 29 2019 Megan from corporate left a voicemail that the case had been escalated. Stated I should hear from escalation manager in 2 to 3 days. November 4 I called corporate to check on the status. Was told Jason was the escalation manager and was waiting for a response from dealership. November 7 2019 Had driven 1120 Miles since last oil change. Husband had to add 4 quarts of oil. Called corporate to report. Still haven’t gotten a response from the escalation department.
I have a 2012 with the same issue. This is a major issue that Kia Is ignoring. Time to start a class action lawsuit with Kia.
I have a 2012 Soul with 194500 miles. I am at the dealer right now for the same problem... again. I am on my 2nd engine. Oil started burning out at 95000 miles on the first one. Did the consumption test and it was ultimately replaced under warranty. Now I am here again with the same issue it looks looks like. Hopefully my dealer will stick to their word and guarantee the engine for life and replace it again. Otherwise, it has been a good car.
Hi guys, I have Sorento 2014 with about 55K on it. Before last oil change I noticed I was low about a quart. Always 100 Synthetic replacement - mostly replaced oil ahead of time. Last Synth oil replacement - about 1000 miles ago, just checked my oil dip stick - I am about a quart low again! There definitely an issue with this. Lets get the issue raised and get KIA to issue recall or payback. This cant go unnoticed!
changed to valvoline 10w30 synthetic high mileage motor oil stopped using i liter every 200 k has 150000 k on engine
2012 Sorento has been loosing oil for the longest time. Took it to the dealership and complained about it, they said there was nothing wrong with it. Now I’m at about 101,000 miles and the engine is done. The vehicle is sitting at a dealership that won’t replace the engine because I can’t produce invoices from my last six oil changes. This is ridiculous, they know there’s a problem with their engines and they do nothing about it. I’m ready for that lawsuit, who’s with me? maggot728er@yahoo.com

My 2014 is doing the same. 83,000 miles but noticed it about 10,000 miles ago. I use only the best oil and change it more frequently than needed. I drive a lot of miles for work. I don't see any oil smoke signs but I'm sure it's rings or seals.
change to valvoline high mileage 10w30 synthetic motor oil
was using 1 liter every 250 kl. after changing to valvoline high mileage 10w30 synthetic in the red container my daughter's 2013 sorento 2.4 with 150000 k has used 1/2 liter in 2300 k for me it was worth a try don't know how long it will last but long enough to trade it in
I had the same problem with my KIA Sorento. After reading this blog, after being told I needed a new engine I called the local KIA Dealer and asked what they were going to do. They had me tow my car in, gave e a rental and fixed the engine, on KIA's dime. The rep told me they are paying people back for replacing engines and have extended warranties. Try to call your local KIA Dealer. Mine was very helpful and I hope this helps someone get some money refunded.
Same problem here with out 2016 Kia Sorento. Ours is around 110k so def over the warranty. We are so frustrated with this car and will never buy another Kia. We haven't taken it to a dealership yet and afraid they will say it's our problem for not keeping up with it through the company. We've taken it elsewhere because closer than the dealership. Our engine is acting up now (making noises). We are still making payments on this car. After reading everyone's comments here and elsewhere, I am even more frustrated with everything.
Same problem here with our 2014 Kia Sorento. Very frustrated since our issue started at just a little over our 100,000 miles.
I purchased a 2013 with about 59k on it two years ago. Car was clean as a pin and obviously well cared for. After owning six months or so I noticed it was consuming more and more oil between changes. It’s got 85k on it now and uses 5-6 quarts between changes.
I traded mine, for GMC. It’s a Sorento issue. Some dealerships now are honoring the issue and fixing. Get dealerships involved fight it out! How long does it take to get recalls on issues?
I have a 2014 Kia Sportage. Go online to Kia Corporate and file a complaint (or phone #800-333-4542). Keep detailed records and receipts...when you've had oil changes, oil purchased to add in, etc. Be kind but persistent. I've been dealing with my oil consumption issue since June 2019 and between the local dealership and corporate, they've (finally) acknowledged the problem and are replacing the engine at their expense. I did bring up during several conversations how many other individuals across the country are experiencing the same issue. The local dealership put me off for several months but finally in December/January they said Kia is beginning to handle the problem.
I have a 2016 Kia optima had the same issue of the oil consumption. Several times I had no oil and they ignored it quite a few times at the dealership and then went through the oil consumption test which was very lengthy. just did an engine replacement which is not a new engine it's a remanufactured partial and they trying to take parts off of your old engine. Have been in touch with Kia consumer affairs the whole time they really don't do anything because they tell you that the dealerships are individually owned and they can run them how they see fit. I also had the dealership unplug my AC while it was in there and tried to sell me an AC compressor saying that mine didn't work. after going through all of that I can't get any information on what is supposed to be my new engine and I am still having issues. I am now starting the oil consumption test all over again because my engine is not only running rough on idling but you guessed it it's running low on oil! Do you think that kia is going to do anything about it. Nope nope nope! I've called them every step of the way everything has been documented. I have a dealership that won't even give me some of the documents that I've requested. This is absolutely the worst and I said what are you going to do go another 15,000 mi so that you can run it at a warranty? Do you even know what kind of warranty is on it now because they say once you put the engine in that it goes back to the $12, 000 or 12-month warranty then the service adviser says no it goes back to the hundred thousand mile warranty and then somebody else says know what goes back to the lifetime warranty that they had to put on them. So nobody really knows what it is. With so many issues going on and so many of the cars running out of oil like my car in particular I had four different occasions where I was down to a half a quart of oil and my light never even came on so I can only imagine the damage that it did to the rest of the car but that's not even being addressed we can't even get them to address the oil consumption part to begin with. They can't even say that they put in a complete rebuilt engine. You can't say the car has this many miles on it and the engine has this many miles on it if you were going to resell it. It's very frustrating and nobody helps you out and no matter how many different places you call you get the same answer I'm not responsible there's nothing I can do we have no control over it it's so on and so forth. So this morning I started my second go- around of the oil consumption test with my hodgepodge engine
Yes....I have the same problem with my Kia Sorrento 2016. We are dealing with a Kia dealership in the SF valley and they keep giving me the run around. I started noticing excessive oil loss after about 60,000 miles. My oil light kept coming even though I had driven less than 3000 miles. It's insane. Kia confirmed that I was losing oil, and tried telling me it's a "power terrain" issue not Kia. We are documenting everything now, and getting ready to file a law suit if Kia doesn't fix the problem. I wonder if any lawyer would consider a group action suit????
I have an attorney that has started to look at the paperwork. I don't know if he does class action lawsuits. If anybody wants to email me you're more than welcome to my email is theresaela@gmail.com I'll be happy to exchange information or any of my experience. I'm now starting my second oil consumption test but I also filed a complaint with the DMV who also deals with the department of agriculture and regulating repair shops. My repair shop did not even put in any system that they put an engine whether it be manufactured which mine supposedly is what partial engine they did put in. I can't get any paperwork on it. I'm still losing oil even after they did their supposed engine replacement remanufactured. I don't think I should have to go through another oil consumption test my car is still running rough and they're also not considering the fact that the car is running out of oil before and you're running at thousands of miles that way so you have sludge oil going through your system and damaging that. And of course the lovely update on the cpu for the engine isn't comforting. Kia is trying to not hold any responsibility. It's kind of like back when Ford didn't want to replace any of the engines when they were catching on fire and didn't want to do a recall instead it took them being sued and a shit ton of money. I'm over it. And then your warranty nobody can give a straight answer on it once your engine gets changed out.
I’ve been dealing with my 2014 Kia Soul burning through oil and running rough since last fall. It was first noticed after I had completed an oil change with My Kia dealership. About a month after the oil change it started to sound extremely rough. I went back into the service department and asked them to check it out while my tires were being changed to winter tires. I was told they didn’t have time and they couldn’t fit me in for a couple of weeks bc he thought it was a big problem. A friend checked the oil level out (took 2 min) and said it had NO oil. That was the beginning of increase in oil consumption. Concerned my dealership did an oil change and didn’t put any oil in it. Concerned this is what started my Kia burning oil. Not looking forward to dealing with Kia.
I am on engine #2. Soon to be #3. Engine #2 is burning oil again. Started around 90k miles just like the first one. #1 was replace on warranty after being put through the Kia oil consumption test program. Fortunately my dealer guarantees the engine for life. So they will be replacing this one too after the test shows it is burning oil again. I’m sure Kia and the dealers are aware of this issue. They probably just hope people trade in the cars before it appears. How can they not know this is going on when they go to change the oil and less and less drains out? They know.

Our Kia sorento has been doing the same and know its having engine problems contacted Kia dealership they said drive it to the shop! REALLY why would risk that so it was towed they charging me $115 for a diagnostic test honestly I think the already knew what was wrong I was then told they have to contact Kia head quarters to see what they want to do because it needs a new engine but there's no guarantee they will fix the problem WTH. We bought this car brand new the mirror fell off before we got off the lot that should have been a clue. I'm hoping Kia makes this right.

I have a 2017 Kia Optima it’s burning about a quart a week. Driving under 500 miles a week. I just dumped over 3 quarts into it. I bought it used. I specifically bought it because of the 10 year 100k warranty. Found out at 62k I had no warranty. Last Kia I will ever own.
I have a 2016 KIA Sorento Turbo. Burning oil problem since December 2019. Mileage at 170,000 km. Kia just replaced my Turbo part of engine (under my extended warranty) to fix oil problem. After 2 weeks, I just happened to check my oil.... EMPTY! WTF! now I find all these other folks having the same problem. I think KIA makes LEMONS! I will never buy another KIA!
I have a 2016 KIA Sorento. 47K miles and on my 3rd oil consumption test this next week Tuesday 3/17/20. Vehicle is using oil. Its turning black and I continue to take picture and document my experience. Horne KIA of Gilbert AZ is currently working on this. I have an open Warranty ticket However, they keep telling me nothing is wrong and it is "NORMAL". I continue to push for resolve and know that this is NOT normal. I am open to a class action suit if they don't work to resolve the issues and push KIA to stand behind their product.
I don't care what anyone says, 5000 MILE oil changes should be criminal, particularly on a highly stressed 4 cyl engine. Glad I bought the V6 (2014 Sorento). I change oil every 3000 miles or so (every 5000Km) with 5W30 synthetic in the summer and 0w30 in the winter. As a long retired mechanic I'd definitely switch to a thicker oil if the engine started using oil. 15W40 all fleet oil won't hurt a high mileage engine - with 3000 MILE maximum oil changes (stay with synthetic on a Turbo)
Same here - 2013 Sorento 2.4 - 4 cyl. Bought the car used 2 years ago (so no manufacturer warranty) at 72,000 miles. 103,000 miles now and over the past 6 months or so, its started drinking oil. Gone through consumption test and its used 3 1/2 quarts over the past 1200 miles. Kia dealer got it in the shop today and says rings are worn, which just so happens to be one of the exclusions in my "lifetime drive train warranty" - cheaper to replace motor than rebuild - $6,500. No way. Then had the nerve to ask if I wanted to trade it in on a new one. I don't think so!
SAME SAME PROBLEM..... 2016 kia sorento. 108,000 miles, every 1000 miles my engine oil level below the low indication. I assume kia has a class action law suite for this manner. I brought my kia to where i bought the car from, they have asked me to drive 1000 miles and did test on oil level. It was 3 qts lower then normal. Just drove another 1000 miles as kia requested for phrase 2 of the test. My vehicle is under service at kia, lets see what they going to say.... Thank you Giray Temuran@msn.com
I as well. GuruBV54Cabout a year ago Best Answer I have 2011 KIA with 96,000 miles. Suddenly Started loosing oil, 2 quarts every 700 miles, did several oil consumption tests already. They want to pull my heads and check the valves. Would take several days to do the service, but they dont want to hive me a rental car for work while mine is in the shop. Anyone get a rental while your car was kept for service?
I had a rental when they were replacing the engine. But I'm now going through my second oil consumption test actually correction third. I would like to know when they're going to actually do something about it? Or if there is a class action lawsuit? If anybody has any information on that can you contact me theresaela@gmail.com please. Even with my supposed new engine it runs rougher than before A lot of hesitation and still losing oil.

I have a 2016 Optima and my wife has a 2017 Kia Sorento. We both had oil changes 28 days ago and I checked it today and there was no oil in both cars. I think I will be calling the dealership Monday because this is not normal.
I have a 2016 Kia optima, almost 60000 miles and two months ago, I started experiencing the high oil consumption. I had it at Kia in Monroeville, infant, I am sitting here again now. I did all the oil tests, drive 1000 miles, etc. 4 times now. My Euc panel went bad two months ago, they replaced it, today the engine light came on and guess what, it is the Euc panel again. I now think it has something to do with the high oil consumption. It was even suggested that I drive with the oil light on to get the engine replaced. Now that would be consumer neglect, stupid I am not. I'm getting the runaround and they don't want to give a tent a car even though it is in the warranty.
Guys, do you think the Settlement shown in https://kiaenginesettlement.com/ is related to the burning oil issue? According to that settlement, depending on your car, you get a lifetime warranty for the engine short block.
I got the settlement info, also. They are probably going to say the burning oil is not related to the knock sensor, but that was a major engine manufacturing defect happening to the SAME motors that lose all their seals and burn oil. I think every one of us should fill out the claim form if you owned the cars listed and we will inundate them with evidence. I am definitely filing the claim and send the receipts of all the oil changes and the bill for $5000 I had to pay to replace the engine in my Sorento.
Anybody claiming the lawsuit ?
I got the same lawsuit stuff in and I think it's a bunch of bullshit because it doesn't compensate you for anything and who the hell wants to go and trade the car in and hopes that you might get $1,000 or something. It doesn't compensate you for anything you can have the damn car back. What the hell is this stupid class action lawsuit supposed to fix anyways could somebody please directly email me and let me know? Because I don't see any benefit from it whatsoever! Maybe I'm just stupid. My car is still shitty and doesn't run right and it's on another oil consumption test which supposed to be a replaced engine and I've had so much time out of my car It's ridiculous and with so much time of a messed up engine that it's screwed up the rest of the car and no you don't want to drive the damn thing anywhere because it runs like shit. Then it's a full-time job to try and keep taking it back in for all their stupid oil consumption tests and it's still not getting fixed. My email address is theresaela@gmail.com
I traded my 2016 after 2 times oil consumption in a roll and Valvoline oil change said they were having issues with oil consumption. We had it at the dealership one time where they told me to do the oil consumption test and then after the next time we just went to the GM dealership and traded it in so I really don’t know if there’s anything I would get out of that. Low trade for sure though.

Oh my gosh! My 2017 Kia Sorento has done this twice now! Jiffy Lube blamed the last place and I paid a bunch to have the system flushed! Then less than a month later, the oil light came on and Jiffy Lube says I have an oil leak. Thank you all for starting this information!! Now I know we are not crazy! This is my second Kia Sorento and I had no issues like this with my first one! It is so disappointing! If there is a class action lawsuit, please contact us at Marieree62@msn.com! Thank you all again for all your information!
I have same issue, it just started at 60k miles. But I’m going to do a consumption test myself first since my oil was just changed at the dealer, and see my results compared to theirs. Any how know that if you have an actual kia filter installed it has a stop valve imbedded. Meaning when the car is off the fluid from the filter and above will not flow back into the pan. So you might see a 1/2 Quart drop right away after car has been run. It because the one way valve. Kia states it to keep lubricant up top as opposed to wait for it to warm up and push the oil there. Just know check the oil just after you run it isn’t a proper check and maybe you should wait 30 mins after shutdown to get a proper level check as some oil still will seep back to pan. As far as the settlement I’m going to choose Exclude Yourself as this may be the best option as it leaves me open to further lawsuits that may come due to the issue. It seems the only option for those who still own their car. But those that have gotten rid of them already I guess it best to get what They are offering. I think it a cheap pay out for their incompetence. But I think this will eventually get bigger
After reading this as well as other threads I stuck my finger as far as I could into the tailpipe on the 2016 2.4 sorento and oil all over my finger. So yea major issues going on.. Shouldn’t be oil there at all, I would think (hope) this may get me past having them do an oil consumption test As a side note does it seem you that you have a louder than usual tapping noises coming from motor? Since I’m in the car more I didn’t notice it as much as the wife who barely in it. And now that I’m attuned to it, it does sound louder.
So I checked my oil this morning I’m a 1/4 low. No biggie. Decided to start the car until it’s idle settled down to normal, waited 1 min then 5 mins each time I was 1 quart low. Next I ran the the at idle to full temp. I’m only 3/4 low after checking at one minute and at 20 minutes after shut down. I don’t know why the wide variations. Is it the one way valve Kia used in their filters? But it seems to me the only way to check the real oil level is to let it sit along time after running. Keep in mind this was all done without driving. I then drove the car about 15 mins check the oils when I got home it at the 1/2 quart low. After letting it sit for 20 mins and checking again it now just shy of 1/4 quart low. So basically back to same level before I started this morning. I’ve not seen this on any other cars I’ve owned. Im doing this try and nail down a consistent good check. Seems best to just checking in the morning is best after it sits. If I didn’t then I’d overfill. All this just trying to figure out if I really do have an oil consumption issue or not. Weird cars!
1quart low at 5 hundred miles, added a thicker lucas oil probably 5 weight to spruce up the 5w20 Kia used figured that probably equals 15w30 another 500 miles and a quart low. So I don’t see a thicker grade working
Guru9D81WX answered 4 years ago
Yup I think I got it down to piston ring issue but still need to take it to Kia. It under 100k so I’m still in warranty. I smell gas on the dip stick in the morning before starting which is why I think I have a crack piston ring. The oil is darker after setting over night before starting and running it. So since the gas is lighter it rises to the top. So I believe this explains the oil use also.
Lol, I wish my oil consumption problem on my 2016 Sorento was as bad as some of yalls, but mine is worse! I burn 1 qt of oil every 315 miles! That's one every gas fill up!!

We have a 2014 Kia Sorento that just crossed over 100,000 miles, and are just finishing our oil consumption test at my dealership (brining it in every 500 miles) and we are down 2+ quarts in 3000 miles. They said they have to put in an "authorization" with Kia and that takes 24-28 hours and they don't have any rentals available. So looks like we are down to one car while they call it in. We are hoping for a new engine but from the looks of previous comments that may not do the trick. I will update once we get more direction.

No one knows if any frustrated owners has contacted a class action attorney for the oil consumption? As I am so freaking mad, oil consumption in my 2017 Optima has apparently gone from 1 qt. per 1k to 3 qt. per 1k as per Kia Glendale, Ca... It is not covered under the engine settlement. I called them 3 times, It just covers the pistons and connecting rod bearings. Although, the rings appear to be disintegrating putting shavings into the oil pan directly. So, I think that I will just keep adding oil till it seizes. If anyone else would like to join me in contacting a class action law firm pls. email donfletcher2@yahoo.com
There is a lawsuit. I got my paperwork months ago, filed it on the Kia I traded in.
Your covered with lifetime warranty on engine power train. If you have the update installed. I have yet to deal with Kia but started having issues with oil consumption 1 quart every 500 miles. I talked to dealership they want me to trade it in. I refused unless they change motor. I’m going to let them put on there used lot not fixed. Tho I have no intentions of getting another Kia ever. I just want the new motor since I’m still making payments. Especially since this is a known issue since 2011 and I have a 2016.
Got rid of my 1 quart per 700 miles oil guzzler Saturday, and NOOOOOOO I did NOT trade it for a new Kia!!!

Hi all, I wanted to follow up, I had a comment about a 2014 Kia Sorento and we did the oil consumption test at a dealership, bring it in every 500 miles and note the loss. We did 3000 miles and had noted that we loss a total of 2.5 quarts in that mileage. They told us there was nothing they could do until the engine fail, this seems like a very hazardous situation if an engine seizes on a highway. Additionally, I was curious if anyone has noticed that the oil light is not illuminating when the oil is low? Because our was not. Lastly, we also looked in the user manual and the manual states that the oil replacement and change of filter should be done at 7,500 miles. This is listed under the "Normal Maintenance Schedule". There is no way there would be oil left in the vehicle at 7,500 miles.
There unwilling to fix. Never used oil between oil changes until I’m guessing at 60k. I seem to use a quart every 500 mile. And the oil is dirty. It never was during the first 60k. Has the smell of a little gas on dipstick. Worse before starting black oil. After its run its alittle lighter but not muck. I have start my oil con test from them yet but will next year. I expect a broken piston ring. I get smoke sometimes when I floor it getting on a highway. At the rate of adding oil it been replaced exert 3000 miles by add a quart every 500. This is bullshit and base on what I’ve read here they do not own up to it. And look on the nhtsa site or the Kia forums it been a know issues since 2012. I’ve take to the sales people. They want me to trade it in i said not unless you give me more than what it worth due to faulty motor. I may consider it. All I get back are cricket noises. And really I don’t want to see them put on a used car lot for someone else
Kia has a lawsuit I got paperwork in the mail to file on it and I traded mine in two years ago and lost my ass on the car I sent my paperwork in on the vehicle that I traded in hopes of getting some money back from Kia when this thing settles.
2014 Kia Sorento. 120,000 miles. This year, after 100,000 miles, been running into empty oil under 3000 miles. Actually had a mechanic (quick oil change place) get mad at me. Called dealership and they want me to do oil consumption test. Should i do it? Will they find anything? I'm going to my mechanic to do a spark plug change and for him to check the CPV. Hope I'm doing this in the right order, or is this just a give up solution and sell and buy another car? I'm really glad I found this forum. Thank you all for the information and it sucks for us but glad this isn't just me.
For 5 or 6 bucks you can change the pcv in less than 5 mins. Spark plugs probably has nothing to do do with the oil consumption. Pcv can. But I don’t think at the consumption rate were all talking about. But have it either checked or just buy one and replace it. Or you can test the existing one. Remove it and shake see if it rattles then it probably fine, if no rattle then it’s bad. Yes I probably would do the oil consumption test you may luck out as some with a new motor or replacement rings. Just really depends on your situation.

If your engine is under the defective engine recall and you have the knock sensor software update, then I have learned that you will likely get a new engine if anything seized up or breaks within the engine block. It won't cover the head or valves from my understanding. Even if the sensor doesn't detect anything, if you bring the engine in and it's seized, you should be demanding a new engine. So just drive em till they blow.
We had to replace the engine at 107,000. After only 14 months, the rear transmission failing, so we got rid of the car. But, I applied last fall for class action settlement and received letter for a REFUND!!! shocked.
Hi Guys. As it was said by the old folks - misery loves company, i guess this why we are all here on this site. It does feels miserable that your otherwise nice vehicle start burning oil and seems NO ONE at KIA dealerships has a slight interest in helping you, sighting some "norms" in oil consumption, telling you that 1/4 of a quart depletion per 1000 miles is OK by KIA standards. (THAT IS 1 QUART PER 4 THOUTHANDS!) Before Pandemic of COVID-19, when I had to drive to work at least 40-50 miles a day, + travel for my kids sports every weekend - I added 1.5 Quart oil between oil changes. Now during the COVID-19, most of people dont drive as much, as well as myself, this problem kind of went on a back burner... I'll tell you this - I had my 1st car a 1986 Pontiac Sunbird that I bought second hand in 1990 - it never burned oil between oil changes, after that I've changed 3 other vehicles from different manufacturers all second hand with high mileage - never had any oil burning issues with any of them. And now - my new KIA 2014 (bough it in 2016 with 17K on it) started to burn oil like crazy at around 60K, and dealer and KIA says that 1/4 of a quart per thousand miles is a normal oil consumption? - this is BS. There NO solution to this issue as I know of so far. Replacing PCV valve may help in some other cases but rarely in severe oil consumption under 100k mileage in KIAs with this 2.4L engines. I watched multiple videos on YouTube - problem exists for many heavy mileage logging KIA drivers, if you drive 20-30k a year - you most likely will have this issue in your KIA, specifically with 2.4L engines. As I found out from one of the YouTube video made by Russian mechanics - these guys are the only nuts that will take the whole engine a part to figure out the problem (I bet N. American mechanics will just replace the engine and forget it..). As it is evident from their video - nothing wrong with the engine in general - except for the Original Design of the cylinder block. In some of the other engine manufacturers designs - cylinder steel chambers constructed as a separate cylinders inside the engine block where coolant flow freely around them to cool off each cylinder individually (this would be graphically like this [ O O O O ]. In this KIA 2.4L GDI design, all 4 cylinder steel chambers are in one line and fused together by the cylinder chamber wall - with each adjacent cylinder (graphically would look like this [ oooo ] with NO spaces between the cylinder walls. These Russian mechanics claim that this kind of design combined with uneven cooling that does not cool each cylinder individually - creates potentially critical forces/uneven heating and cooling of the cylinder chambers, expanding and contracting during extreme heat/cooling cycles, is enough to influence slight deformation over time of the cylinder chamber geometry from a perfect circular form to a slight ellipsoidal. The measurement of X and Y axis of each cylinder circular opening (especially 2 inner ones) show difference in a 0.04 of a mm. (and this is in a cooled state, I say it is would be much greater in a high temperature state) This high temperature/expansion/contraction stress related deformation over time is enough for compression rings on the pistons not to be able to completely close the gap between the cylinder and piston in the direction of the deformed larger ellipsoidal deformation. This causes in extreme temperatures due to this unsealed GAP some oil to be able to get into the compression chamber from the engine block and burn with the fuel. Of course your KIA's catalytic converter would not allow this to be exhausted into the atmosphere (catalytic converter makes sure all the exhausted gases from the cylinder is completely burned on the exit) - this why most of the KIA vehicles still can pass the CO2 exhaust level during inspection DESPITE the high oil consumption that your KIA vehicles are experiencing between oil changes. This situation is NOT normal and must be addressed by KIA with dignity and respect to all the KIA customers who put their trust and money in to KIA branded vehicles, and the warranties KIA promise during the purchase process. The Oil Burning Issue is a serious issue, no KIA owner should be worrying about adding oil into engine in the middle of the designated mileage untill the next oil change. So I am asking KIA to stand by their word of quality and issue recall to any KIA vehicle that consumes oil between normal oil changes, PERIOD! The mechanic claims - nothing can really fix the deformation issue, some workarounds may help a little, but they will NOT fix the inherent issue of flawed original design. Hypothetically, If KIA would disclose that their vehicles start burning oil at around 60k mileage, and 1 quart of oil need to be added between each oil change - Who in the right mind would buy these cars? But here we are in this ridiculous predicament thinking on how to resolve our vehicle problems created by KIA manufacturer, and our vehicle resale value with this issue is = $0 !!! - this is NOT FARE!
How about 1 quart per 500 miles like most us are saying here. Either way it sucks.
UPDATE: Took, my 2014 kia sorento in for the 4 recalls on it. While there I told the guys about my oil. After fixing my recalls they said NO OIL CONSUMPTION TEST from corporate on engines that have our problem. They said to drive my car until it breaks! Yup, if I hear noises or the car stops completely, they said to contact them and they will tow my car for free and FIX the car for FREE under now LIFETIME warranty. They said not to refill my oil unless I hit 5000 miles and keep doing oil changes at 5000 but do not add more oil until then. They will replace/fix for FREE. This is very strange to me to let my car go until it breaks. Anyone else hear that from the dealership or corporate about the engines that burn oil? I asked why they wouldn't just fix it now BEFORE it breaking, and they said that's what corporate told them to do. Seems fishing and pretty dumb to me. Any suggestions?
FrankZappa answered 3 years ago
Yes heard the same, no more oil consumption tests. Your choice on whether to add oil or not. If you don't it will definitely blow, but you take a chance that theyll find a reason not to fix it.
Open a BBB case with what they told you cat hurt. I’ll find out what my dealer does next month when I go for my oil change and let you know
Did you all get this information about reimbursement for repairs??? https://www.kiaenginesettlement.com/
Don’t add oil I use 1 quart per 500 mile. That a laugh. I’d be empty. Guess I’ll have a recording device on me when I talk to them too and suggest they put it in writing also
Called KIA 800 number and they wouldn't even discuss the extended warranty with me, they just gave me the number to the lawsuit (kiaenginesettlement.com) and they told me this is only for replacing the short block. Not even sure that will fix the problem of the oil, but if it's "free" then it might be worth trying. If this doesn't work then definitely time to sell the car. I think not adding oil and waiting for the car to "break" is only more reason Kia is trying to get out of this and blame other problems or driver and not their engine. Seems shady what they're doing.
Oil consumption problem w 2016, 4 cyl., KIA Sorrento I have a 4 cyl. 2016 KIA Sorrento. Last November (2020), at 106K miles my service center advised me that when they changed the oil, it was very, very low. After confirming it myself, I took the vehicle to my KIA dealer at 107K. After three oil consumption tests they confirmed this vehicle was burning oil (approx. 1 qt/500 miles), and requires a new short block and engine gasket kit, $4385.59 and new valve seals and hardware, and clean and resurface cylinder head, $1066.49. With shop fee and tax the total would be $5784.27 (with only a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty).. The dealership refused to cover this repair because the vehicle (when they saw it) slightly exceeded the 100K mileage warranty. I appealed to KIA Consumer Affairs and after a month of stringing me along, I was advised that this repair would not be covered as a ‘good will’ gesture either. It is widely recognized that this defect can cause engine seizure or stalling or fire and can be dangerous if experienced. I am now faced with replacing the engine (by a third party) at a cost of $5K - $6K (w 3 year/unlimited mileage warranty). It is my intent to follow up as a claimant in the class action lawsuit known a Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation, No. 8:17 cv 00838 JLS JDE and Flaherty v. Hyundai Motor Company, et al., No. 18 cv 02223 (C.D. Cal.), and benefit from the Lifetime Warranty since I have installed the Knock Sensor Detection System Update. Claims Must be filed by August 9, 2021, with receipts that the work has been done. See: https://kiaenginesettlement.com/

I own a 2017 Sorento with the 2.4 L engine. I just started having oil consumption issues back in March 2021 right around 76,000 miles. Based on what I'm reading on here, I guess I'm lucky to have gotten that far with my engine before oil issues occurred. I did the oil consumption tests at my local KIA dealership and it resulted in nothing but them telling me I need a new engine or to contact the KIA corporate complaints hotline and to start a case, which I did last week. The SOB that answered the phone barely sounded sympathetic to my issue and sounded more like a used car salesman. He told me they've actually gotten complaints from people at 40,000 miles on their engine and that I'm lucky I only started having issues at 76,000 miles. I told him, "What does that say about your quality control and engine engineering?". I tried going the poverty route with him and he said he'd start a case but that it's unlikely KIA would help me out since I'm no longer under warrany since I'm the second owner and I'm passed the 60,000 mile warranty. That's ridiculous that KIA isn't making good on engine replacements, with or without warranty coverage before the 100,000 mile mark. A car engine shouldn't start having major engine issues before 100,000 miles these days. And I'm of the mindset that KIA doesn't have an appropriate fix either. The KIA dealership told me it would cost me about $4 - 5K for an engine rebuild, I'm assuming that's without labor costs. And even then, it's a rebuilt engine with certified used parts. So you're not even getting a brand new engine at all. And the dealership said even then, the rebuilt engine may give me the same oil consumption issues at 80,000 miles again, which makes me think I should cut my losses and try to sell it and just buy a different manufacturer vehicle altogether. I reached out to the lawfirm that is handling the class action lawsuit against KIA for engine oil consumption issues. They said they'd get back to me to verify if my 2017 Sorento is covered for reimbursement of the short block. If it is, I'll probably end up fronting the cost for the rebuild if it's reimburseable. If it's not covered, I'm definitely selling my Sorento and just buying a different SUV like a Buick Envision or an Acura RDX. I'd never give KIA any business in the future. I'm guessing most people who comments on this page won't either.
That suxs . But with all the motors they have already changed before this settlement now they want sympathy. This issue goes back to 2011 I believe? They knew about it but never fixed the issue. Never will I buy another one. They blamed now some bearing. I read it is a design flaw in the cooling in their short block motors. The middle two cylinders don’t get the same cooling as the outer most two Which caused the inner two to warp. Hence oil loss past the piston rings as well as some gas. I bet when you change the oil and after 500 miles your oil is dark and dirty, you can probably smell a hint of gas on the dipstick at times. “Hence cars catching on fire” People that have had the engine changed experience the same issue sometime after it had about another 40k driven on it. So if your getting the same motor by this third party I would expect you’ll end up back in the same place. Look at other forums on car gurus and Kia forums . There is a YouTube video on the actual cooling issue that causes the warped cylinder and the bearing issue. I’ll post the text from the YouTube video after this.
Actually it was posted here 5 months ago.
I may have the answer to everyone's problem. Replace the PCP Valve. I replaced mine not to long ago and the burning oil problem completely went away. It's kind of silly that Kia doesn't list this as a maintenance item to replace in there vehicle Manuel maintenance schedule.
Did that no change it was the first thing I did. How many miles do you have? Have seen posting on other forums where it did help or fix the issue tho
