how do i activate the 4 wheel drive position on the 2001 ford ranger xlt

There should be a push button on your dash that says "2wd, N, 4LO, 4HI". just push 4HI and away you go... A light will/should light up on your dash. You should have the "shift on the fly" but DO NOT activate it if you are going anything faster than 15-20MPH, I know some say you can be going faster, but I have never lost a tranny/transfer case/CV shaft, by going slower. That is just a personal preferance.

to me nutural is the only way to go into 4x4,thats just me.

to get into 4x4 in a ranger if you have shift on fly any speed under 30 4x4 high will engage, for 4x4 low you need to be stopped and in neutral or park. for the manual t-case's you can do the same speeds just pull the lever, make sure you have 4x4 you may just have a edge model that 4x4 suspension but not 4x4.
