2002 VW Passat Dashboard Lights Go Out While Driving

Asked by Guru9Q1WWD Mar 03, 2022 at 06:18 PM about the 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car always starts up just fine, but it honks whenever I turn the key. Then
as I drive my dashboard lights that say mpg and outside temp., slowly dim
from the top until they go out. I've replaced the battery and this is still an
issue. It also gets much worse on warm days. Because my car is so old, I'm
hoping this is an issue I can ignore, but also I travel 4 hours on a regular
basis and want to make sure it won't shut my car off. I didn't have this trouble
until I replaced the thermostat, but I also didn't drive it very much until
recently.

check appropriate fuse tangs for any tarnish and clean them up , look under hood for any obvious wiring problem ie. burnt or broken insulation .
